Wow, the great jeanai monologue! He he. Well I like what Jeanai said about a real Lama. I heard that a real Lama will from day one work towards us becoming independent.
Dear bossanova, you can start with few people in your own country, canada, 3-4 people, meet regularly to discuss about what you learn from the YouTube with others. Singapore and London also have a cell group with few members meeting regularly. You can start one too. May Canada soon have a cell group that meet and discuss about Rinpoche's teaching, and start practicing. If you need help, email to KecharaHouse.
There is a London cell group? Oh how exciting! I would love to go! Where can I find out more information??? Will I be able to find out from the KH website??
Hey jeanai1986! Thank you for the address, I'll email soon. I notice you're also from the UK? Whereabouts? Do you attend the group? What do you guys normally discuss???
Dharma hehehe ;) the group's usually held every couple of weeks at a group member's house. For example, there was one time where we discussed one verse of the 8 Verses of Mind Transformation per class (Rinpoche has given teachings on the Eight Verses, the videos are on YouTube).
We'll set the topic ahead of time so if you give your email to KH, they'll pass it on to the group to get in touch with you. As Rinpoche does, we try to relate our dharma discussions to everyday life. So for example, discussions on attachment might include our personal experiences with attachment, and the suffering it causes us. What's nice is how non-judgemental everyone is, and how we're all there to support one another :)
Dear bossanova, dont worry, i'm sure one day Kechara House will manifest a branch in Canada......If happened that you visiting Malaysia, please drop by at our center, and you will have warm welcome from our center people.......Cheers.....
Wow, so nice to see Kechara House is spreading global, I love Rinpoche teachings and all the activities in Kechar House, hope one day Kechara House will open a branches in Canada here.........
Besides that, one of the student in Kechara House has kindly sponsored and open up a Kechara Paradise in Penang, and offered up to Rinpoche....Wow, rejoice rejoice rejoice.........
Perhaps Kechara House is already in Global, as Nepal has the Kechara Lounge for visitor to come in to know more about Kechara House, i forsee more to come in the near future......
KMP recently just has a book launch - Guru For Hire in London Book fair, and the book fair was so successful there.....this is one of Rinpoche vision to go global.........
Kechara House are full with wonderful and friendly people, this is where i like and all the department allow us to do more dharma works, i personally like the KSK department where we distribute food to homeless people, KO - a nice and new age vegetarian restaurant to promote vegetarian, and CFC - Fund Raising department, where hosting all kind of social events to raise funds......
Yeah, Kechara House is spreading very fast, and all the department is growing and growing, and more and more people hearing about kechara house name.....This is Rinpoche vision, to let the dharma voice reach to everyone .....
Kechara House is just like a Monastery, they have all kind of activities that allow people to practice dharma, really a innovative and new age buddhist society in Malaysia.....Wish to have this center in my country ........
Thanks tenzintrinlay, i will participate in next year debate tournament, in the meantime, i need to brush up my dharma knowledge first, and learn from the those participant..........
Is not about whether you have a good debate skill or not, is the matter about learning, as i can see here, all of them might not have a good debate skill, but they dare to participate, is just because they want to learn more....
Yah, is quite fun to see the student debate and not the monks, and you can see everyone of them has a skillful way to debate......to me i cant really debate, cause my debating skill is not good at all.......
The only place you can see this kind of Dharma Debate is in Kechara House, normally this kind debate is hosted in the monastery and the debater is all monks, and yet in Kechara House is all the students......
Yeah most Kechara activites are student-run because Rinpoche encourages his students to start and run activites. He's actually said in the past that a good lama, a true lama, is one who tries to get rid of his students as soon as they take refuge! What he means is that as soon as a student takes refuge, a true lama will push his/her students to become independent in their learning and practice.
After all, lamas are Buddhas manifested in the human form. Because the human form cannot last indefinitely, sadly, one day a student will have to practice and learn on their own :( so what kind of 'lama' is someone who makes you more dependent on him/her? How are they benefiting you if they tie your spiritual progress directly to their human lifespan? That means that person is not a real lama because they want to keep themselves surrounded by many students, to boost their own ego!
Which is also another reason why we need to heed Rinpoche's teachings about checking out a person before you accept them as your guru. But then after checking them out and accepting them, you should accept them 100%...if you keep doubting forever, you'll never progress! It's like if you keep doubting your reading teacher forever, you never would've learnt how to read!
These are the last year debate, you guys should look at the 2009 debate tournament which is more fun, as you can see everyone is laughing while they are debating........
Our worldly debating lead us to generate ego and arrogance mind, example, when you debate with your boss, to prove something that you are right, this kind of debate end will generate anger cause your boss disagree with you and you dont listen, and yet dharma debate doesnt has all these unhappy moment, and you can see everyone is happy after debating.....
This kind of debate is not like our worldly debate, and this dharma debate help us to create awareness, help us to increase our dharma knowledge as well as cure away each other ego and arrogance mind......
Yes, because in a worldly debate, it's all about winning and beating the other team. It's about making them feel stupid, showing how little they know, etc.
In a dharma debate, like you said triplegems118, it's about creating awareness and curing egos and arrogance. It's about everyone learning more, about testing our knowledge and understanding so we turn out to become better dharma practitioners. It's to prevent us from complacency, when we think we know everything or we know enough.
Ohh yeah, and you can see this kind of Debate in Kechara House, see how those student letting their hair to debate in the dharma topics, is very challenging and fun and yet no hard feeling after who win in the debate,.......
When we become complacent, we become lazy. When we become lazy, we don't feel the need to question what we've learnt...and maybe then blind faith might develop, or we start to feel like we don't need to learn anything else. In any case, in a dharma debate, you always end up seeing topics from a different perspective.
Dharma Debate is one of the tradition in all the Monastery, this allow the monks to debate about their view and whatever they have learn from the guru, and in the same time give them knowledge,........
Dharma teachings are said to be like a precious wheel because, wherever they spread, the people in that area have the opportunity to control their minds by putting them into practice. Hence Im sure KH held debate tournament as one of those aim such as understanding dharma teachings by learning, listening and questioning thru debate session.
Interesting and thought-provoking. What a wonderful way to learn and gain a thorough understanding of the topic. Its an ancient tradition that has a lot of relevence in today's society.
There are 5 rounds of debates this year, not including the finals. Wow, that's very interesting. They are all on tsemtulku channel. Do have a look to see debate on topics in the book "Gurus for Hire, Enlightenment for Sale". Very interesting.
Yes, the topics include: What submission (to a guru) really means, Volunteering or working for Dharma, Guru- bashing, and many interesting topics about Guru-Disciple relationship. A must watch I tell you! The final is on refuge.
Yes, the video of the finals of 2009 Annual Manjugosha debate is out! Go to youtube(dot)com/tsemtulku and it's the latest video there. You can also search for: Final Round - Kechara House Annual Manjugosha Debate Tournament 2009
This is great, to see a bunch of young people debating Dharma in Kechara House. Keep it up. I read on Kechara House website that the 2009 Annual Manjugosha Debate finals was on Wesak Day. Wow, can't wait to watch the video.
Thank you Tsem Rinpoche. Through watching the videos, I realise that I have not been a good person because I dont really think about caring for others. I very much wish to help others and improve myself after watching your videos on youtube.
In the context of Buddhism, a Buddha loves all sentient beings. So if we do not start loving others, how can we ever become enlightened? It is not possible. Thank you for this profound book Your Eminence!
It is true. We need sentient beings to practice and develop our good qualities. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche also quoted an example that it is not possible to practice patience if we have no people or situation to develop patience with.
Tsem Tulku Rinpoche mentioned in his book, Compassion Conquers All that Without sentient beings we cannot practice compassion. Without compassion we cannot attain Bodhicitta. Without Bodhisitta, we cannot become an enlightened Being. Looks like this attitude of cherishing others more than oneself is pivotal.
Yep, you're right and that's precisely what Rinpoche always teaches. For example, Rinpoche has always placed great importance on the Eight Verses of Mind Transformation. In one of the Eight Verses, it reads "When someone whom I have benefited and in whom I have placed great trust hurts me very badly, I shall regard that person as my holy guru."
Another verse refers to accepting the defeat and offering the victory to others. One of the 'themes' of that prayer is about giving up the ego and developing compassion...how can you practise bodhicitta if you still have ego? Rinpoche has given an incredible teaching on the Eight Verses - if you check out his channel, I think there's a series of 12 videos that you can watch to learn more :)
I am very happy to learn this teachings from Tsem Tulku Rinpoche. Thank you Rinpoche. This teaching not only can help me immediately transcend the problems I face every day, it also helps me to develop kindness and care for others. Thank you very much Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, I will read Compassion Conquers All to learn more.
I guess thats why his students can talk about the 8 verses very well, because they have met someone like Tsem Tulku Rinpoche who really embodies that precious teachings of cherishing others more than oneself.
It is true that sentient beings are important because we are interdependent. The food we eat every day, the car we drive, the gas of our car, all comes from others (although we pay for it). Hence, we need to think about how others have contributed to our well-being, including our parents.
I am sure Tsem Tulku Rinpoches students can debate well and bring up the points due to Rinpoches kindness in teaching them and also publishing such an easy to read book about something so profound.
Every sentient being is precious to us because they are really kind to allow us to help them, and through helping them we help ourselves. We learn to care about others and eventually, to put others welfare above our own. What a great teaching!
Thank you Tsem Tulku Rinpoche for 12 wonderful videos of Eight Verses of Thought Transformation on youtube. They really made me reflect on my life, what I have been doing and my attitude towards others. Your thought provoking questions really made an impact on me. Please continue to post more teachings on youtube.
Yes, each verses itself is a gem. If we really contemplate and practice it, it brings a lot of benefit IMMEDIATELY in our lives, we do not need to wait for it to ripen in next life to see the results.
Yes, this verse is in fact leading to the path of Bodhisattva-hood and also development of bodhichitta or compassion. Thank you Kechara Media & Publications for publishing Compassion Conquers All. It really is a good read simple, light to read yet profound. Very good for contemplation and meditation.
Yes, Tsem Tulku Rinpoches work has benefitted many. For example, Kechara Soup Kitchen distributes 500 packs of food to homeless weekly. These are immediate effect/ help. This is not taking into account the progressive or long term effect of transforming his students minds to benefit others , that will reap much bigger effect in the future.
I think Tsem Tulku Rinpoche is a living example of this selfless attitude. Rinpoche helps others even when he is poor back in Gaden Monastery, and now Rinpoche is doing so much more by establishing Kechara and its various departments, helping others to search within for spirituality.
The teachings of Buddhism contain every technique for eradicating selfishness and actualizing the attitude of cherishing others. That is what Tsem Tulku Rinpoche talks about all the time. To be less selfish and to contribute more to help others and think of others first before oneself.
I agree. Mother Teresa, who sincerely devote her entire life and energy to selflessly serving the poor, needy and helpless, are always remembered for her noble work with respect, and she is never unhappy although she lived a simple life.
I agree. Those who have the attitude of cherishing others regard others as more important than themselves are much happier than those who are concerned about their selfish gains or goals. It is true. For example, look at Mother Teresa, Mahatma Gandhi, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and Tsem Tulku Rinpoche. They suffer so much for others yet they are never unhappy.
The self-cherishing attitude makes us very uptight; we think we are extremely important and we just want ourselves to be happy and for things to go well for us. In fact, acting out of self-cherishing can never make us happy.
It is true, that we ourselves, just like all other beings want to be happy and completely free from suffering . No wish-fulfilling jewel can free us and free them from sufferings. So we need to always remember this. There are infinite numbers of people out there who are more important than just us selfishly achieving our own selfish goals through the wish-fulfilling jewel, well, not that we have one anyway.
This is the the verse of the debate: With the thought of attaining enlightenment for the welfare of all beings, who are more precious than a wish-fulfilling jewel, I will constantly practice holding them dear. It is true, that all beings are important than us, because they are more and we are only one.
Not only that, Tsem Tulku Rinpoche also spoke about the differences between arguing to win and arguing to learn, apart from the annual debate and the benefits of debate.
In the video, Tsem Tulku Rinpoche gave an introduction about the annual debatebetween the 3 great monasteries of Gaden, Sera, and Drepung. It is very interesting to know that there are inter-monasteries debate, wow. I wonder if outsiders like us can visit?
You can watch a video of Tsem Tulku Rinpoche explaining about debate here on youtube. Search for: Dharma Talk: Debate by HE Tsem Tulku Rinpoche. I find it very informative.
Hi, the debate is a competition for the different departments of Kechara House, for example, Kechara House puja group, Kechara Media & Publications, Kechara Soup Kitchen, Kechara Saraswati Arts and so on. You can be nominated by these departments to represent them in the Annual Manjugosha Debate.
I like how the Kechara House members debate. I find this is a very interesting way to learn Dharma. Do you have this debate regularly? What about Dharma classes? I am very interested to know more.
I think the points discussed in this video is very interesting, that sentient beings are more important than wish fulfilling jewel. It is true that we cant achieve enlightenment with wish-fulfilling jewel, and also, our karma cannot be changed even with wish-fulfilling jewel.
The monk being questioned sits on the ground, the questioners stand. In Kechara House, you can see that the challenger team stand while the defending team (being questioned) sat on the ground, just like how the way they do it in the great Gelugpa monasteries.
If you have been to the monasteries, you will see that the groups debate right next to each other and the volume of shouting is continuous, so the circumstance forces the monks to gain excellent concentration.
This also forces the monks to concentrate. If the monks get distracted with the debates around them or caused them to be annoyed, then they lost. This is to help the monks to develop concentration skills on the debate ground and this can be applied to meditation, even to meditating in noisy places.
The monks in India have morning debate early in the morning. All the classes of the college debate on the same grounds, breaking into groups of two or three, with everyone shouting at the top of his voice, it is very interesting to watch these debates.
I agree. Its very hard for me to meditate because I find it difficult to stop mentally wandering or falling asleep. I wish I had the chance to participate in Dharma debates. It will help me learn a lot. Please continue to post these debate videos on youtube, thank you.
I think this firm conviction is very important when we meditate on topics, such as impermanence, the equality of self and others, regarding others as more precious than oneself, and so on.
Thats great. I think in that sense, one will gain firm conviction in the teachings or points presented, for example, in this case, to talk about why sentient beings are better than the wish-fulfilling jewel.
If one can defend the position against all objections and one finds that it has no logical inconsistencies and there are no contradictions, then one can focus on that position or view with totally decisive awareness that cannot be shaken. This is why you see that the 2 groups also take turns to become defender of the points.
One of the main purposes of debate in the Buddhist training is to help you to develop decisive awareness. You take a position and then your debate partner challenges it from many points of view.
I found the info that the monastic education system in the Gelug monasteries covers five major topics, based on five great Indian scriptural texts studied through the medium of logic and debate. This shows how important debate is to help us understand and realise the teachings.
One of H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoches guru, Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen wrote a great book Keys To Great Enlightenment, that is a commentary on Commentaries on Geshe Langri Tangpa's Eight Verses on Thought Training. Wow, this is the very guru that Tsem Tulku Rinpoche served and learnt from in the United States when he was a teenager. How fortunate of Tsem Tulku Rinpoche to have received teachings and to study under these great masters.
Wow, I didn't know that Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen was Tsem Tulku Rinpoche's guru. Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen is a very renowned master in LA, and he's very instrumental in bring His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to the West. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche must have great merit to met such a teacher at a young age.
I think it is very difficult to convince people to OTHERS are more important than ourselves because all our lives we have been concerned with taking care of ourselves first. Also, I am sure these teachings are passed on only to those whom the teacher judged to be qualified in the past, and these are accompanied with commentaries, not just given out as points without elaborate explanations.
Yoshiroliette , though is seems like benefitting others we neglect ourselves but the truth is further than the truth . The truth when we bring happiness to others , we also become happy .
It is true, if you look at the verses, it is very rare that people are willing to accept the sufferings of their own works/ faults, no need to talk about accepting the sufferings of others as ones own. Thats the difference between us and the people like H.E Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, Mother Teresa, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and so on?
I read that these teachings were orally transmitted only to a few students. The reason for this was that the message of Thought Training is to teach the student to learn to accept the sufferings of others as ones own and to be totally engaged in the interest of others. This was a message that few people were able to believe in.
Do you know that these holy teachings were only transmitted to great masters in the past? How fortunate we are to get access to these teachings nowadays. These teachings on Thought Training have been passed on unbroken from Shakyamuni Buddha to the great Atisha. The primary student to whom Atisha passed onthe entire teaching of Thought Training was Dromtonpa. He in turn passed them on to his chief students Geshe Potowa, Geshe Sharawa, and Geshe Langri Tangpa.
Wow, you mean this is serious stuff transmitted to a few disciples? I don't know much about Tibetan Buddhism but this sounds really mystical, like a very sacred teachings from the past. Thank you Tsem Rinpoche !
If Buddhas could have washed all our sins and negative karma they would have done it long ago . Unfortunately this is only something we can do by ourselves .
All things are subjective as mentioned in the debate , a gun in the hands of a child is very dangerous , in the hands of a law enforcement person it is a means for establishing law and order.
People have advanced and have more conveniences but still, their minds are not happy . So advancement in material gains or conveniences is not a true cause for happiness.
Newvision- I cant agree with you more which is why places like Kechara House exists . If worldly items and experiences can give us permanent lasting happiness places like Kechara House would cease to exist. There is definitely something that spiritual offers that differs from worldly happiness outside.
Just as we show reverence to Buddhas , we also have to show respect and reverence to sentient beings as well. As only through our engagement with sentient beings can we develop our virtues.
I liked one of the debaters that mentioned for us to have our conveniences and our survival it depends on others . Like in urban areas for us to get food , people must have brought all the ingredients together , cook it for our consumption.
The debate was focusing a lot on the wish fulfilling jewel. Though wish fulfilling jewels can give us all kinds of material comforts and fulfill our desires but it still cannot give us enlightenment.
The Buddhist monks in the great monasteries after so many years of debating , I guess if they are challenged it would be next to impossible to defeat them .
This years debate was based on the text Gurus for Hire and Enlightenment for Sale which was recently relaunched in the London book fair. One can purchase from the kechara(dot)com/eshop .
I wonder why they were talking so much about the wish fulfilling jewel , when the main point is that it is through reliance on sentient beings and buddhas we can gain enlightenment.
debates have existed when Buddhist encountered non Buddhists . And later on it was between rival Buddhist schools . As to when it actually started I am not sure which year was it?
Newvision , many people were converted through debates in the olden days. Which as a Buddhist i am proud of the non violent manner in which people are brought to the dharma .
Within the Gaden Lhagyama practice , the Migtsema can be done to increase ones wisdom in fact seven types of wisdom. In the case of debate , there is one type of wisdom called the wisdom of spiritual debate that can be harnessed
Debate tournament is very beneficial activity in Kechara House, not only to the person who join the debate but also to the audience who attend the debate. It is such a fun way to learn and understand what other ppl have learnt about Buddhas teachings. It is also a great way to improve ourselves especially to cut our ego...
I would say besides the organizers, those went for the debate deserve a pat on their shoulder, the time spent on preparation and discussions for the event itself
Thanks for the info on this year's debate. I will definitely go watch it.
It is on Wesak Day.. and i gather from KecharaHouse(dot)com that they have many other exciting and meaningful activities as well for that day... Bathing of Dzambala (Buddha of Wealth), Vegetarian foods, blood donation, pets adoption, bazaar, etc. Waaa.. must be lots of fun...
Yeah, looking at all these activities, I'm sure it will be lots of fun... thanks for the info. I will definitely join them, i feel it will be more meaningful than just go to light a lamp and incense at temple like I did for many years.
You know what, I heard that the finals for this year's Manjushri debate will be held on Wesak Day in Kechara House. The topic will be on refuge. How exciting! Check out kecharahouse(dot)com
You sure need quick wisdom and wisdom of debating for debates, which are part of the 7 types of wisdoms that Manjushri and Lama Tsongkhapa bestows when the meditations are done correctly.
Lama Tsongkhapa was such a great scholar/debater that it seemed that he spent his whole life studying and debating. However, he also meditated a lot and his attainments made it seem like he spent his entire life in meditation. Lama Tsongkhapa also was a great teacher and it seemed like he spent his whole life teaching the Dharma. Hence, Lama Tsongkhapa was remarkable for the achievements in these three spheres.
Did you know that Lama Tsongkhapa modeled Gaden Monastery after the ancient Indian Nalanda monastery? The system of debate was derived from there. Debate was a powerful means used by the ancient Indian Pandits to 'convert' the aggressive Brahmins. They would use powerful logic developed through meditation and learning to subdue these Brahmins. Many great Brahmins were converted and they became key figures that further the development of Buddhism in ancient India.
This debate is just one of the many interesting activities organized by kechara. Ive been watching their activities for 2 years now and it has grown tremendously within this time. With 12 departments featuring activities from pujas, dharma classes, statue painting, dharma book publication, thangka painting and sewing, pilgrimages, statue making, mantra rolling, video production and even a vegetarian restaurant, they offers something for everyone! Find out more by writing to care @ kechara . com
they give food to the homeless and urban poor every saturday and sunday too! there's just so much of interesting departments and activities that we can get involved in and collect merits. i am in love with Kechara House now.
Fantastic video showing a fun way of learning more about Buddhism and dharma! Kudos to kechara house for organizing these activities for their members. Just like Buddha has 84,000 teachings, kechara has 12 departments with a variety of dharma activities for everyone! Visit the website for more information! kechara . com / index . php!!
Youre absolutely right! Kechara IS a dharma center available online 24/7!! Even getting the latest news on whats happening is available online thru their weekly newsletter (email care @ kechara . com). And students can go on the tsemtulku forum to get their questions answered. The forum moderators are knowledgeable, unbiased and go the extra mile to help.
In fact, kechara is now in London promoting their latest book gurus for hire enlightenment for sale. All the kechara London group got their hands dirty helping out in the London book fair. There was a lovely launch party in Cadogan gardens too. The latest news is on kecharahouse . com. So trust me when I say that even if you are geographically far from kecharahouse in Malaysia, the miles in between dont make much of a difference. Kechara for me is an online dharma center :)
Distance is no problem. I recently moved to the UK and joined a group of rinpoches students in London. We meet up regularly to share and discuss Dharma, and we can even join the weekly dharma classes via an online connection! Rinpoches senior students regularly visit the different student groups to teach and guide them along the path. Its a wonderful way to remain part of kechara despite the miles in between!
Hi, Im from Singapore which is miles from kechara but I am a student of tsem rinpoches. The distance is not a problem for me because Kechara has branches located throughout Malaysia, Singapore and even as far as London Im told! The branches are set up by rinpoches students so that more people can get connected to Buddhism via rinpoches unique and penetrative methods. You can write to care @ kechara . com for more information.
If you dont live near the center or have your own Guru, you can still learn more about Buddhism from tsem rinpoche. His teachings are available on youtube and on neonlama . com. The books & DVDs are also available on kechara . com / eshop or on amazon, barnes & noble, etc
I love love love what kechara is doing but Im not living anywhere near the center. I visited their website and was amazed at the extent of rinpoches work! Community service, publishing, traditional Tibetan arts and crafts, pilgrimages you name it!! Does anyone know other centers who have the same sort of activity?
Yes, Rinpoches modern approach is extremely applicable for the modern generation, who are progressive, educated, forward-thinking and are seeking spirituality and a deeper meaning to everyday life. Everyone reading this go to kecharahouse . com, it is a fantastique center with activities for all.
Thank you tsem tulku Rinpoche for putting up these videos to share with all. I hope more dharma centers will follow your example and provide these fun ways for students to learn more. I visited your website and was amazed to see that you have so many different departments with activities to suit all types of members. Thank you Rinpoche and may your dharma work continue to grow.
Thats right The newsletter youre talking about is also available online at kecharahouse . com / newsletter / newsletter_khapr212009 . html. Thats for this weeks issue but you can sign up to receive it every week.
If you cant visit kecharahouse . com, you can sign up for the weekly e-newsletter by emailing care @ kechara . com. Its got great news and photos of the latest happenings, and the best part is, the are special teachings and messages from Rinpoche inside too!! I always look forward to receiving it!
I was very curious after reading all the comments and watched the video in its entirety. Boy was I entertained!! And did I learn a lot about these 8 verses. Wonderful. How can I stay up to date with what kechara is doing? I dont go online so much as my internet connection is pretty slow.
Yes I agree completely with you. Did you know that Gurus for Hire Enlightenment for sale has been relaunched in its 2nd edition, containing more content from tsem tulku Rinpoche. The news is on the kechara website kecharahouse . com.
This is an old video from last years debate. This year the debate is about Guru Devotion, based on Rinpoches own book Gurus for hire Enlightenment for sale. I bought the book from amazon and I encourage everyone else to buy and read it! Rinpoche draws from his own personal experiences when serving his Guru and intertwines it into an inspiring teaching on how all Buddhist students should behave when it comes to their Gurus and dharma centers!
Fun fun fun!!! I really enjoyed watching these debates, there are many more videos of the debate competition. Its great how rinpoches students engage in this new form of learning more about Buddhism! Hilarious yet educational. Im happy to see that there are new debates this year about the subject of guru devotion its applicable to all students of Buddhism. Watch more at youtube . com / tsemtulku
I really like how kechara house encourages its members to learn more about Buddhism through many different methods. The debate looks awesomely fun and exciting! I hope my center would also organize activities like these in the future.
Debating is an age-old tradition in Tibetan Buddhism because the monks debating must understand the nuances and finer points of the subject at hand. The Buddhist form of debate is different from normal debates in that it is purely based on logic and understanding. Simply being a big-mouth doesnt necessarily guarantee victory! I applaud kechara house for providing a variety of ways for their students to learn more!
cokeismyit: what forums are you talking about? Are you talking about the forums on tsemtulku(dot)com? Actually I just found it and it is on the Friends section and it links to the form there. Neat! Any discussion about eight verses can be brought over there.
Yes, they also came to Singapore before during Singapore World Book Fair in 2007 and had a book talk on Compassion Conquers All as well.
It was really great to know that masters like Tsem Tulku Rinpoche is keeping these holy teachings of 8 verses alive and making it relevant to modern living and everyday lives.
Tsem Tulku really knows how to make the teachings more alive and relevant in this moden age. If you ask me to read books, I will definitely not do so, but Rinpoche's teachings on youtube are really treasures that we can access all the time.
Hehe cokeismyit, same here, I definite would not read Dharma book that has more than 5 pages... listening to Rinpoche is totally different feeling... especially in youtube here, I totally enjoy learning from all his teachings.
I subscribe to Kechara newsletter and found out that Kechara Media & Publications is now in London launching the revised edition of Gurus for Hire Enlightenment for Sale.
Wow, they are bringing Rinpoches teaching worldwide to reach out to many.
I attended a book talk in MPH Mid Valley for the book Compassion Conquers All, presented by Andee, the editor of the book (in this debate video) for Kechara Media & Publications. It was an eye-opener, to realize how Buddhist philosophy can be applicable in daily lives and its not just a religious theory or propaganda they really do work.
yoshirolisette - KMP are doing more interactive events like that now. Today they held a book club in KL at Kechara Mystical Treasures (it's on Jalan Telawi 2 in Bangsar). They discussed "What's a Guru/why do I need one". If you're interested and would like to attend, sign up to their Twitter feed (KecharaKMP) to keep updated...I hear there are plans for more clubs like that in the future :)
Yes, I keep forgetting that Tsem Rinpoche came form the glorious Gaden Monastic University.
It is very good for us that he speaks good English, and that Tsem Rinpoches creative way to explain how we can deal with the situations in our daily lives without being very frustrated.
I think Tsem Tulku growing up in the states in a blessing for us, and because of that, he can speak very good English and so we don't need a translator.
Yes I agree with you bimbothroneholder. In his previous life, Rinpoche definitely planned the rebirth he would have. I mean, how else could you explain how well his life mirrors ours, to the point we feel "Oh yes, he knows what he's talking about because he has been through it himself"? I think he definitely planned where he would be born and raised (so he can speak English so we can understand him) and the childhood he would have (so he picks up experiences that we can relate to).
But I think blessings are impermanent if we don't create merit to sustain the blessing (I don't think I explained that very well!). After all, Rinpoche can definitely plan to grow up in the States. He's in control of what he does, says, thinks and definitely where he is born, lives, where he teaches, etc. However, if we as his students don't hold our vows well, keep our dharma commitments and practise guru devotion, what reason does Rinpoche have to stick around?
So I think Rinpoche's done his part - he learnt English, suffered many obstacles, studied dharma for many years and kept his vows. It's our turn to hold up our end of the bargain, so to speak - we need to see that all of his experiences and efforts are not 'wasted' on us. If you want to look at it this way - Rinpoche can open the door to dharma and enlightenment for us, but it's up to us to step through the door.
Its true. In fact, acting out of self-cherishing can never make us happy. When you listen to Tsem Tulku Rinpoches teachings, you will see how Rinpoche can make a statement or point really clear to us and how we can apply it immediately in our daily lives. This is different from just studying the verses on your own. I strongly recommend that you watch the 8 verses videos by Tsem Tulku Rinpohce. It might change the way we look at things and how we can change to the better.
yes, I agree with LTashi123 that all of you should go and watch the Eight Verses video on this tsemtulku channel.
These are great teachings that can show us how to observe our mind and how to improve. The best part is this is based on what Lord Buddha has taught and has proper lineage being passed down from Lord Shakyamuni.
Tsem Tulku always mentioned about selcf-cherishing. The self-cherishing attitude makes us very uptight; we think we are extremely important and our basic desire is for ourselves to be happy and for things to go well for us. Yet we dont know how to bring this about.
I think people who have the attitude of cherishing others regard all other beings as much more important than themselves are happier people than those who are selfish.
I like it when they analyse and dissect the topic of discussion. For an example, how wealth can create a lot more problems instead of solving our problems. This is a good counter argument for having the wish fulfilling jewel, even with a wish fulfilling jewel, we will still not be happy .
It is true that material things cannot bring us happiness, although it does make us excited and "happy" to get them. And the "happiness" is only temporary until we get bored of the item.
I think thats why there are these young people who are very knowledgeable in Dharma debating in the video.
The Dharma classes, are they open to public? I think these Dharma classes must be really great if they produce these young people who are knowledgeable in Dharma and able to counter argument points.
The other team that is the older participant gave good points for argument but the younger team came back strong with points that are based on solid Dharma knowledge.
Wow, I am impressed with Kechara House. I think this is because there is Manjushri Class every Sunday afternoon in Kechara House and the classes have been going on for years.
I agree with you, I checked out one of the Eight Verses of Thought Transformation videos by Tsem Tulku on youtube and found it very profound. Tsem Rinpoche mentioned that the basis for holding others as supreme is because we ourselves and all other beings want to be happy and completely free from suffering, and in this we are all exactly equal and no difference. However, each of us is only one, while other beings are infinite in number.
The other team that is the older participant gave good points for argument but the younger team came back strong with points that are based on solid Dharma knowledge. Wow, I am impressed with Kechara House. This must be the results of studying the Dharma well. I guess that must be the results of attending Manjushri Class every Sunday afternoon in Kechara House 1.
This teaching is widely given by His Holiness Dalai Lama also. One of the verses is about seeing others as precious, who are more precious than a wishfulfilling jewel, and hence holding them near. Tsem Rinpoches explanation on this matter is very clear, easy to practice, and very modern and applicable in our daily living.

This 8 verses is not something that was created by Tsem Rinpoche. It originates from Lord Shakyamuni himself but came through the lineage of great Dharma master like Shantideva, Atisha and so on, and later down to Geshe Langri Tangpa. This is a teaching being studied in Tibetan Monastic University, and not just a method that was thought up by a nobody.
By the way, there are 12 videos on Youtube about this topic of mind training by Tsem Rinpoche.
The youtube video titles: Eight Verses of Thought Transformation. These are the original teaching that goes toward producing the book Compassion Conquers All where the debate topics were based on.
I like what was presented before the debate: to realize that we cannot blame anyone or anything outside of ourselves for our unhappiness, that these problems wont be solved if we just look outside. The only way is turning these circumstances to our benefit through mind training or 8 verses of mind transformation. POWERFUL!!! Thank you Tsem Rinpoche for the wonderful teachings!

It is quite inspiring to see these young people debating in Dharma in Malaysia. It is great that they can explain why wish fulfilling jewel will not solve our problems ultimately. It is great insight to know that external material or wealth cannot bring us happiness.
Annual Manjugosha Debate is happening in Kechara House right now every Sunday until Wesak Day on the 9th May. Do drop by if you want to watch the excitement LIVE! Check out the website for news re debate and information re schedule: kecharahouse(.)com
I learnt a lot watching this video, to know that even if I have a wish fulfilling jewel, I will STILL not be happy. Thank you Kechara House for organizing debates and also putting them up on youtube. Please post up more debate videos.
It was a very good attempted to have this kind of debate in this centre and I would like to see more of this.
However, instead of having it annually, it will be better to conduct once or twice a month.
Moreover, after viewing this clip, I do hope that those debaters do their homework before engaging this debate.
It seems to me they don't know the dharma at all.

May Canada have a Kechara Canada Cell Group soon. KCCG.
drakula101 2 years ago

What do you guys normally discuss???
jellienellie1 2 years ago
Dharma hehehe ;) the group's usually held every couple of weeks at a group member's house. For example, there was one time where we discussed one verse of the 8 Verses of Mind Transformation per class (Rinpoche has given teachings on the Eight Verses, the videos are on YouTube).
jeanai1986 2 years ago
We'll set the topic ahead of time so if you give your email to KH, they'll pass it on to the group to get in touch with you. As Rinpoche does, we try to relate our dharma discussions to everyday life. So for example, discussions on attachment might include our personal experiences with attachment, and the suffering it causes us. What's nice is how non-judgemental everyone is, and how we're all there to support one another :)

tenzintrinlay118 2 years ago
Yeah most Kechara activites are student-run because Rinpoche encourages his students to start and run activites. He's actually said in the past that a good lama, a true lama, is one who tries to get rid of his students as soon as they take refuge! What he means is that as soon as a student takes refuge, a true lama will push his/her students to become independent in their learning and practice.
jeanai1986 2 years ago
After all, lamas are Buddhas manifested in the human form. Because the human form cannot last indefinitely, sadly, one day a student will have to practice and learn on their own :( so what kind of 'lama' is someone who makes you more dependent on him/her? How are they benefiting you if they tie your spiritual progress directly to their human lifespan? That means that person is not a real lama because they want to keep themselves surrounded by many students, to boost their own ego!
jeanai1986 2 years ago
Which is also another reason why we need to heed Rinpoche's teachings about checking out a person before you accept them as your guru. But then after checking them out and accepting them, you should accept them 100%...if you keep doubting forever, you'll never progress! It's like if you keep doubting your reading teacher forever, you never would've learnt how to read!
jeanai1986 2 years ago
These are the last year debate, you guys should look at the 2009 debate tournament which is more fun, as you can see everyone is laughing while they are debating........

Our worldly debating lead us to generate ego and arrogance mind, example, when you debate with your boss, to prove something that you are right, this kind of debate end will generate anger cause your boss disagree with you and you dont listen, and yet dharma debate doesnt has all these unhappy moment, and you can see everyone is happy after debating.....
triplegems118 2 years ago
This kind of debate is not like our worldly debate, and this dharma debate help us to create awareness, help us to increase our dharma knowledge as well as cure away each other ego and arrogance mind......
triplegems118 2 years ago
Yes, because in a worldly debate, it's all about winning and beating the other team. It's about making them feel stupid, showing how little they know, etc.
In a dharma debate, like you said triplegems118, it's about creating awareness and curing egos and arrogance. It's about everyone learning more, about testing our knowledge and understanding so we turn out to become better dharma practitioners. It's to prevent us from complacency, when we think we know everything or we know enough.
jeanai1986 2 years ago
Ohh yeah, and you can see this kind of Debate in Kechara House, see how those student letting their hair to debate in the dharma topics, is very challenging and fun and yet no hard feeling after who win in the debate,.......
pasquale2k 2 years ago
When we become complacent, we become lazy. When we become lazy, we don't feel the need to question what we've learnt...and maybe then blind faith might develop, or we start to feel like we don't need to learn anything else. In any case, in a dharma debate, you always end up seeing topics from a different perspective.
jeanai1986 2 years ago
Dharma Debate is one of the tradition in all the Monastery, this allow the monks to debate about their view and whatever they have learn from the guru, and in the same time give them knowledge,........
gelugpa118 2 years ago
Dharma teachings are said to be like a precious wheel because, wherever they spread, the people in that area have the opportunity to control their minds by putting them into practice. Hence Im sure KH held debate tournament as one of those aim such as understanding dharma teachings by learning, listening and questioning thru debate session.

In the context of Buddhism, a Buddha loves all sentient beings. So if we do not start loving others, how can we ever become enlightened? It is not possible. Thank you for this profound book Your Eminence!
ChiKiCheong 2 years ago
It is true. We need sentient beings to practice and develop our good qualities. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche also quoted an example that it is not possible to practice patience if we have no people or situation to develop patience with.
reneetcs 2 years ago
Tsem Tulku Rinpoche mentioned in his book, Compassion Conquers All that Without sentient beings we cannot practice compassion. Without compassion we cannot attain Bodhicitta. Without Bodhisitta, we cannot become an enlightened Being. Looks like this attitude of cherishing others more than oneself is pivotal.
ChiKiCheong 2 years ago
Yep, you're right and that's precisely what Rinpoche always teaches. For example, Rinpoche has always placed great importance on the Eight Verses of Mind Transformation. In one of the Eight Verses, it reads "When someone whom I have benefited and in whom I have placed great trust hurts me very badly, I shall regard that person as my holy guru."
jeanai1986 2 years ago
Another verse refers to accepting the defeat and offering the victory to others. One of the 'themes' of that prayer is about giving up the ego and developing compassion...how can you practise bodhicitta if you still have ego? Rinpoche has given an incredible teaching on the Eight Verses - if you check out his channel, I think there's a series of 12 videos that you can watch to learn more :)
jeanai1986 2 years ago
I am very happy to learn this teachings from Tsem Tulku Rinpoche. Thank you Rinpoche. This teaching not only can help me immediately transcend the problems I face every day, it also helps me to develop kindness and care for others. Thank you very much Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, I will read Compassion Conquers All to learn more.
gillreira012 2 years ago
I guess thats why his students can talk about the 8 verses very well, because they have met someone like Tsem Tulku Rinpoche who really embodies that precious teachings of cherishing others more than oneself.
ChiKiCheong 2 years ago
It is true that sentient beings are important because we are interdependent. The food we eat every day, the car we drive, the gas of our car, all comes from others (although we pay for it). Hence, we need to think about how others have contributed to our well-being, including our parents.
yoshirolisette 2 years ago
That's a very good insight. I never really thought of interdependence and how important sentient beings are. Thanks for sharing the idea.
tsemiscool 2 years ago
I am sure Tsem Tulku Rinpoches students can debate well and bring up the points due to Rinpoches kindness in teaching them and also publishing such an easy to read book about something so profound.
ChiKiCheong 2 years ago
If you really think about the verses carefully, they are really mind-blowing and profound teaching on one of the greatest Mahayana topics.
Thank you all for uploading!
yoshirolisette 2 years ago
Every sentient being is precious to us because they are really kind to allow us to help them, and through helping them we help ourselves. We learn to care about others and eventually, to put others welfare above our own. What a great teaching!

Yes, each verses itself is a gem. If we really contemplate and practice it, it brings a lot of benefit IMMEDIATELY in our lives, we do not need to wait for it to ripen in next life to see the results.
MoiraKelly1 2 years ago
Yes, this verse is in fact leading to the path of Bodhisattva-hood and also development of bodhichitta or compassion. Thank you Kechara Media & Publications for publishing Compassion Conquers All. It really is a good read simple, light to read yet profound. Very good for contemplation and meditation.
ChiKiCheong 2 years ago
Yes, Tsem Tulku Rinpoches work has benefitted many. For example, Kechara Soup Kitchen distributes 500 packs of food to homeless weekly. These are immediate effect/ help. This is not taking into account the progressive or long term effect of transforming his students minds to benefit others , that will reap much bigger effect in the future.
reneetcs 2 years ago
I think Tsem Tulku Rinpoche is a living example of this selfless attitude. Rinpoche helps others even when he is poor back in Gaden Monastery, and now Rinpoche is doing so much more by establishing Kechara and its various departments, helping others to search within for spirituality.
ChiKiCheong 2 years ago
The teachings of Buddhism contain every technique for eradicating selfishness and actualizing the attitude of cherishing others. That is what Tsem Tulku Rinpoche talks about all the time. To be less selfish and to contribute more to help others and think of others first before oneself.
MoiraKelly1 2 years ago
I agree. Mother Teresa, who sincerely devote her entire life and energy to selflessly serving the poor, needy and helpless, are always remembered for her noble work with respect, and she is never unhappy although she lived a simple life.
MoiraKelly1 2 years ago
ChiKiCheong 2 years ago
The self-cherishing attitude makes us very uptight; we think we are extremely important and we just want ourselves to be happy and for things to go well for us. In fact, acting out of self-cherishing can never make us happy.
LTashi123 2 years ago
It is true, that we ourselves, just like all other beings want to be happy and completely free from suffering . No wish-fulfilling jewel can free us and free them from sufferings. So we need to always remember this. There are infinite numbers of people out there who are more important than just us selfishly achieving our own selfish goals through the wish-fulfilling jewel, well, not that we have one anyway.
MoiraKelly1 2 years ago
This is the the verse of the debate: With the thought of attaining enlightenment for the welfare of all beings, who are more precious than a wish-fulfilling jewel, I will constantly practice holding them dear. It is true, that all beings are important than us, because they are more and we are only one.
LTashi123 2 years ago
Not only that, Tsem Tulku Rinpoche also spoke about the differences between arguing to win and arguing to learn, apart from the annual debate and the benefits of debate.
MoiraKelly1 2 years ago
In the video, Tsem Tulku Rinpoche gave an introduction about the annual debatebetween the 3 great monasteries of Gaden, Sera, and Drepung. It is very interesting to know that there are inter-monasteries debate, wow. I wonder if outsiders like us can visit?

Hi, the debate is a competition for the different departments of Kechara House, for example, Kechara House puja group, Kechara Media & Publications, Kechara Soup Kitchen, Kechara Saraswati Arts and so on. You can be nominated by these departments to represent them in the Annual Manjugosha Debate.

I like how the Kechara House members debate. I find this is a very interesting way to learn Dharma. Do you have this debate regularly? What about Dharma classes? I am very interested to know more.
yoshirolisette 2 years ago
I think the points discussed in this video is very interesting, that sentient beings are more important than wish fulfilling jewel. It is true that we cant achieve enlightenment with wish-fulfilling jewel, and also, our karma cannot be changed even with wish-fulfilling jewel.
ChiKiCheong 2 years ago
The monk being questioned sits on the ground, the questioners stand. In Kechara House, you can see that the challenger team stand while the defending team (being questioned) sat on the ground, just like how the way they do it in the great Gelugpa monasteries.
LTashi123 2 years ago
If you have been to the monasteries, you will see that the groups debate right next to each other and the volume of shouting is continuous, so the circumstance forces the monks to gain excellent concentration.
ChiKiCheong 2 years ago
This also forces the monks to concentrate. If the monks get distracted with the debates around them or caused them to be annoyed, then they lost. This is to help the monks to develop concentration skills on the debate ground and this can be applied to meditation, even to meditating in noisy places.
LTashi123 2 years ago
Why do they have to shout? Isnt that showing anger or impatient? Shouldnt it be done in a more polite way?
yoshirolisette 2 years ago
Yoshirolette , yeah i guess they are just very excited and could not control their emotions .

ChiKiCheong 2 years ago
I think this firm conviction is very important when we meditate on topics, such as impermanence, the equality of self and others, regarding others as more precious than oneself, and so on.
cokeismyit 2 years ago
Thats great. I think in that sense, one will gain firm conviction in the teachings or points presented, for example, in this case, to talk about why sentient beings are better than the wish-fulfilling jewel.
yoshirolisette 2 years ago
If one can defend the position against all objections and one finds that it has no logical inconsistencies and there are no contradictions, then one can focus on that position or view with totally decisive awareness that cannot be shaken. This is why you see that the 2 groups also take turns to become defender of the points.
cokeismyit 2 years ago
One of the main purposes of debate in the Buddhist training is to help you to develop decisive awareness. You take a position and then your debate partner challenges it from many points of view.
cokeismyit 2 years ago

How fortunate of Tsem Tulku Rinpoche to have received teachings and to study under these great masters.
tsemiscool 2 years ago
Wow, I didn't know that Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen was Tsem Tulku Rinpoche's guru. Geshe Tsultim Gyeltsen is a very renowned master in LA, and he's very instrumental in bring His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to the West. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche must have great merit to met such a teacher at a young age.
yoshirolisette 2 years ago
I think it is very difficult to convince people to OTHERS are more important than ourselves because all our lives we have been concerned with taking care of ourselves first. Also, I am sure these teachings are passed on only to those whom the teacher judged to be qualified in the past, and these are accompanied with commentaries, not just given out as points without elaborate explanations.
yoshirolisette 2 years ago
Yoshiroliette , though is seems like benefitting others we neglect ourselves but the truth is further than the truth . The truth when we bring happiness to others , we also become happy .
syntero1 2 years ago
It is true, if you look at the verses, it is very rare that people are willing to accept the sufferings of their own works/ faults, no need to talk about accepting the sufferings of others as ones own. Thats the difference between us and the people like H.E Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, Mother Teresa, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and so on?
cokeismyit 2 years ago
I read that these teachings were orally transmitted only to a few students. The reason for this was that the message of Thought Training is to teach the student to learn to accept the sufferings of others as ones own and to be totally engaged in the interest of others. This was a message that few people were able to believe in.
yoshirolisette 2 years ago
Do you know that these holy teachings were only transmitted to great masters in the past? How fortunate we are to get access to these teachings nowadays. These teachings on Thought Training have been passed on unbroken from Shakyamuni Buddha to the great Atisha. The primary student to whom Atisha passed onthe entire teaching of Thought Training was Dromtonpa. He in turn passed them on to his chief students Geshe Potowa, Geshe Sharawa, and Geshe Langri Tangpa.

Newvision- I cant agree with you more which is why places like Kechara House exists . There is definitely something that spiritual offers that differs from worldly happiness outside.
drmanhattan73 2 years ago
Just as we show reverence to Buddhas , we also have to show respect and reverence to sentient beings as well. As only through our engagement with sentient beings can we develop our virtues.
drmanhattan73 2 years ago
I liked one of the debaters that mentioned for us to have our conveniences and our survival it depends on others . Like in urban areas for us to get food , people must have brought all the ingredients together , cook it for our consumption.

The debate was focusing a lot on the wish fulfilling jewel. Though wish fulfilling jewels can give us all kinds of material comforts and fulfill our desires but it still cannot give us enlightenment.

I wonder why they were talking so much about the wish fulfilling jewel , when the main point is that it is through reliance on sentient beings and buddhas we can gain enlightenment.

Debate tournament is very beneficial activity in Kechara House, not only to the person who join the debate but also to the audience who attend the debate. It is such a fun way to learn and understand what other ppl have learnt about Buddhas teachings. It is also a great way to improve ourselves especially to cut our ego...

You sure need quick wisdom and wisdom of debating for debates, which are part of the 7 types of wisdoms that Manjushri and Lama Tsongkhapa bestows when the meditations are done correctly.
bhusukumode 2 years ago
Lama Tsongkhapa was such a great scholar/debater that it seemed that he spent his whole life studying and debating. However, he also meditated a lot and his attainments made it seem like he spent his entire life in meditation. Lama Tsongkhapa also was a great teacher and it seemed like he spent his whole life teaching the Dharma. Hence, Lama Tsongkhapa was remarkable for the achievements in these three spheres.
Dungkar80 2 years ago
Did you know that Lama Tsongkhapa modeled Gaden Monastery after the ancient Indian Nalanda monastery? The system of debate was derived from there. Debate was a powerful means used by the ancient Indian Pandits to 'convert' the aggressive Brahmins. They would use powerful logic developed through meditation and learning to subdue these Brahmins. Many great Brahmins were converted and they became key figures that further the development of Buddhism in ancient India.

Yes, I keep forgetting that Tsem Rinpoche came form the glorious Gaden Monastic University.
It is very good for us that he speaks good English, and that Tsem Rinpoches creative way to explain how we can deal with the situations in our daily lives without being very frustrated.
intothefire110 2 years ago
I think Tsem Tulku growing up in the states in a blessing for us, and because of that, he can speak very good English and so we don't need a translator.
bimbothroneholder 2 years ago
Yes I agree with you bimbothroneholder. In his previous life, Rinpoche definitely planned the rebirth he would have. I mean, how else could you explain how well his life mirrors ours, to the point we feel "Oh yes, he knows what he's talking about because he has been through it himself"? I think he definitely planned where he would be born and raised (so he can speak English so we can understand him) and the childhood he would have (so he picks up experiences that we can relate to).
jeanai1986 2 years ago
But I think blessings are impermanent if we don't create merit to sustain the blessing (I don't think I explained that very well!). After all, Rinpoche can definitely plan to grow up in the States. He's in control of what he does, says, thinks and definitely where he is born, lives, where he teaches, etc. However, if we as his students don't hold our vows well, keep our dharma commitments and practise guru devotion, what reason does Rinpoche have to stick around?
jeanai1986 2 years ago
So I think Rinpoche's done his part - he learnt English, suffered many obstacles, studied dharma for many years and kept his vows. It's our turn to hold up our end of the bargain, so to speak - we need to see that all of his experiences and efforts are not 'wasted' on us. If you want to look at it this way - Rinpoche can open the door to dharma and enlightenment for us, but it's up to us to step through the door.
jeanai1986 2 years ago
LTashi123 2 years ago
yes, I agree with LTashi123 that all of you should go and watch the Eight Verses video on this tsemtulku channel.
These are great teachings that can show us how to observe our mind and how to improve. The best part is this is based on what Lord Buddha has taught and has proper lineage being passed down from Lord Shakyamuni.
bimbothroneholder 2 years ago
Tsem Tulku always mentioned about selcf-cherishing. The self-cherishing attitude makes us very uptight; we think we are extremely important and our basic desire is for ourselves to be happy and for things to go well for us. Yet we dont know how to bring this about.
LTashi123 2 years ago
I think people who have the attitude of cherishing others regard all other beings as much more important than themselves are happier people than those who are selfish.
intothefire110 2 years ago
The discussion point for this debate comes from the first verses of the Eight Verses of Thought Transformation:
With the thought of attaining Enlightenment
for the welfare of all beings
who are more precious than a wish-fulfilling jewel
I will constantly practise holding them dear.
LTashi123 2 years ago
I like it when they analyse and dissect the topic of discussion. For an example, how wealth can create a lot more problems instead of solving our problems. This is a good counter argument for having the wish fulfilling jewel, even with a wish fulfilling jewel, we will still not be happy .
tsemiscool 2 years ago
It is true that material things cannot bring us happiness, although it does make us excited and "happy" to get them. And the "happiness" is only temporary until we get bored of the item.
bimbothroneholder 2 years ago
