Sorry, it's all one word -- Breadwinner. Now there was an innovative band. The whole 1994+ math rock scene owes it's dick to Breadwinner (as well as all the obvious prog rock influences that Breadwinner modernized). Even Damon from Don Cab will grudgingly admit that Breadwinner were the dudes who changed the face of indie rock. As for screamo? I would figure Drive Like Jehu fit that label to a T. I used to really dig them, but now I can't make it through an album. The screaming is annoying!
@Traductus5972 Blah, blah... this is hardcore punk, nothing "emo", "screamo", "homo", or "heemo". Put down your little Spin magazine tree chart that shows the lineage of rock music. Those fucktards think Nirvana invented punk and Sonic Youth invented art/noise rock. Antioch Arrow is hardcore punk/noise stuff. Great stuff. Have been a fan since 93.
@SteveAlbinisPussy well Screamo is hardcore punk at least the real stuff is. but i really consider bands like gang green, the Gorilla Biscuits, Minor Threat, Bad Brains and Black Flag hardcore punk. AA just seems like there's more to it. and may i ask what fucking moron thinks that nirvana invented punk. i can see the sonic youth thing since no one has really heard of Swans, but wtf are you telling me that this generation hasn't heard of bands like the ramones, crass or the stooges
@Traductus5972 "Screamo" is one of those labels people attribute to a scene in hindsight. No one called it "screamo" at the time. It was hardcore punk. As for ramones and the stooges, they were more just plain 'ol rock n' roll with punk attitude. I really can't stand most old skool punk, because it's about as punk rock as Chuck Berry. The lyrics, clothing, and attitude were punk, but the music was boring, bland, and poorly played 50's rock n' roll. Little innovation... Bread Winner, dude...
@SteveAlbinisPussy The Stooges, The Ramones, and Crass are bland, boring and lack inovation? ok i know bland and boring are both opinionated but not inovated you know how many bands they a have influenced
@Traductus5972 Right, but their own sound is derivative of 50's rock n' roll. Listen to the Ramones or Stooges, especially. It's just rock n' roll with heavier guitars, more 'tude in the lyrics and different clothes. The Ramones, in particular, seem to have written one song and duplicated it over and over -- all their stuff sounds the same. Most stuff like Polvo is much more informed by art and progressive rock than punk rock. That's pretty obvious and the bio says they were into SST and prog.
@SteveAlbinisPussy If you listen to a lot of the bands on SST, they have as much to do with prog and jazz as punk. Dinosaur Jr? They sound more like Deep Purple than the Ramones. Long and involved guitar solos? Not a punk asthetic. Minutemen? fIREHOSE? Jazz. A lot of Black Flag stuff is just insane art rock -- listen to those Greg Ginn solos and they're nuts. Apparently he's into jazz and goes to Scofield shows. Negativeland? Not soundy lika Ramonsie.
This is the original screamo, not emo!!! I listened to these guys way back in '93 when I was so bored with the the chuggga chuggga sXe at the time. They offered something much different at that time. Still have all the records, Screw the crap sXe from that era, it was horrible!!! Yes, Mouthpiece,Ressurection, Strife and Lifetime... terrible bands living off the crumbs of Gorilla Biscuits!
One of the best band of this genre was Sleeping Body of texas, they are a lesser known band but awesome. The live wfmu tape is a virtual how to emo/screamo lesson. RIP Chad-you will be missed.
I think of this when ever anyone gets into discussions about "brutal" or "emotional" or any such related abstraction in live punk music. These San Diego kids weren't involved with being tough or crazy or wacky or more hardcore; they WERE the fucking shit storm.
antioch arrow was great. saw them several times in california - san diego and berkeley (and i think oakland, where i lived). i feel old too now as someone else said here. especially since i can only remember andy's name, even though the bass player (mack?) played keyboards with my band (cars get crushed) in santa cruz at a house show once. i wish i had tapes from back then of my band and all the great bands of that era. there are good bands today too but something is missing it seems
Thats funny you say that. I stopped telling people all the cool bands I've seen since they have gone from being a stripe on my punk uniform to a testament of my age...not that it matters much. example: Yea I've seen Herion like 5 times. Response: DAMN, how fucking old are you??? rad.
... and I wish people would stop procreating, but lets not delude ourselves.
And I do dig your point, but despite it being a tired ass argument, I think that the issue of "emo" may have important historical significance... besides if people stopped discussing lame ass genre boundaries, than the sex pistols would be the end all, be all of punk, and mufuckas would still be painting x's on everything in sight and calling it hardcore: its the separation that brings us together.
If it had any historical importance, or any importance at all, it would be more than just jaded 17 year olds on the internet whining about it.
Notice how no one from the bands themselves gives a shit about this sort of stuff any more, it had its time and its place.
There are better bands and better genres to be honest, even the people from the bands themselves know this, why do you think they all eventually broke up?
@TelltaleRaven No shit. The bullshit they call "emo" nowadays is pop punk played by dudes who dress like goths. WTF?!? I think AA are more hardcore punk. I'd give more credit to Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbox, Shudder to Think, and Shiner for creating "emo". AA are great, but kind of far off from anything I would consider "emo". You might as well call Black Flag "emo". Then again, it seems like "emo" is more of a look than a sound. Might as well be Emo Phillips.
uh, like the genre seemed to die off from mainstream several years ago, since then there has been so much good shit popping up, taking influence from a lot of these earlier post hardcore acts.
nowadays, people stand 20 feet away from the stage at bands that dont move. this guy is going fucking crazy and the crowd stays right there, duznt move a bit. i wish i could see something like this for myself.
god bless antioch arrow. sadly self imploded right after i released 'gems' on amalgamated. recall wandering the streets muttering to myself for a week : ((
So am I , I remmeber them when they played my hometown, Holtville, they played in my best freind's(well was) room, it was an 10 x 10 foot room, man, talk about stuffy, stench and hot, there was even moshing, it was the best! Whats hard core now? Or punk for that matter?
