Look at Hedorah, Gigan, Megalon, Destroy All Monsters, Mechagodzilla, Terror of MechaG, Space Godzilla, Final Wars, and any film involving King Ghidorah (sans GMK and the 1991 film). These new films were made to show that the Japanese are the only ones who know Godzilla's potential, but they are not a continuation of the 60s - 90s. '54 is the only backdrop these new ones have, and if you watch G2K, you'll know this alien's backstory.
