Definately one of Paul's best nice job! I have an identical fireglo 4003 but I changed to the vintage toaster p/ups and a direct replacement bridge. It nails the 60's tone brilliantly!
Very good except the one note going down should be flatted on the scale. On "Could it be anybody." Also less notes on scale part on this middle section.
i wonder if paul still owns his rickenbacker, i have seen recent photos of his collection and i do not see it in any of them. The last time I had seen or heard it played by him was in 2001 on driving rain. He either no longer even bothers getting it out or he doesn't own it anymore....
I have the exact same problem on my jazz bass, but rickenbackers are like butter for action, sure theres some with higher action, but you could always have them set up
Good work, but try playing it way up the neck, mostly on the 3rd and 4th strings and with the string damper engaged - you'll get much closer to the McCartney/Ric sound you can hear on the original. One of THE classic basslines, though, eh?
Rickenbackers certainly are good with picks, every style is good on a Rick, I once saw a live band where the bass player was playing the Rick with drumsticks!
does Rickenbackers always sound like they just got new strings? because I'm considdering on buying one.
When you try basses in the shops, they allways have new strings... but then when you have played them a few times, they start getting sloppy and lesser bright in the sound... how good is a Rickenbacker at keeping that sound?
Everyday when i go downstairs i think someone bought a new bass that looks exactly like my 4003 and its tone is so consistant. I change strings for safety ever 2 months but i've kept them on for like 4 and they sound just as good everynote.
It is indeed. The whole problem with the original mixes of the song (mono or stereo) was that the instruments were kinda buried. The remix on the Yellow Submarine "Songtrack" were a revelation--not only was the bass much clearer, it brought ouf some lead guitar which was always there, but just never so clear. A great song all around.
4001 was stopped early 1980s and has a more trebly sound and a fatter neck ferrule at the first fret, think Chris Squire and McCartney sounds. The 4003 was started in the early 1980s as the replacement, with a slimmer neck ferrule at the first and a deeper sounding capacitor placed in the tone controls. From 2006 Rickenbacker now make the 4003 with a push pull pot that gives you either the thinner 4001 sound or the thicker 4003 sound. I own one of these models and it's got a great sound
Excellent, but I do agree with iprq1966 that the treble is too high. You have the bass line down perfectly and would sound great with the bass level turned up. Great Job though
you have a jetglo and fireglo?! i only have the maplego 4003...i'd kill for the 4001c64s though...! nice one man, sounds fab

@vinorama58 you are wrong, paul said sometime that he used his rick for sgt pepper, and the sgt pepper bass tone cant be of a hofner bass...

Yes. It has the older-style Fireglo finish and a skunk stripe, which give it away as a 4001. The tone is also pretty signature.

Y'know what I noticed on Ricks? The action seems really comfortable, is this so?
My Stagg's action is monstrously high, makes playing it a chore.

He plays guitar, but still cool with drumsticks.
And Mathias IA Eklundh (from freak kitchen) plays with china-food-sticks-things.... And also one live consert he played with a bullock-penis :P
