It isnt romantic so much as frenetic and over-hurried. Perfect pitch and execution and nice dynamics... but somehow it sounds like the Quartetto Italiano couldn't wait to get it over with so that they could go down the trattoria for a quick glass of Nero d'Avola or 6.
Some of my friends are playing this for solo and ensemble, and when I looked at the music, I was surprised to see the second violin in 6/8 when everyone else is in 3/4 (around 2:07). Brahms did some awesome things with this song. I really enjoy it.
Wonderful! Immediate, natural & so balanced: well played. Funny how every few bars Brahms seems to drift into some convention or other before surprising you with a clear & invigorating touch of genius.
"Quartetto Italiano", the best chamber ensemble in any time...

Between 5:40 and 6:18 on the Emerson recording is amazing. So powerful and rich.

I prefer the emerson quartet record. This one is too much romantic even for brahms

That's not extraordinary. Just think that a compass in 6/8 is equals to two 3/4 in just one compass.

Regardless, it's not too often that you see it

Great Quartetto Italiano! I'm proud to say that I studied with Piero Farulli - former viola player. He's a great man, as well as an awesome musician
