Once one of the most prosperous, beautiful cities in America. It must have hurt terribly to have to pack up your belongings, take your family and leave what was perhaps the only city you'd ever known when the jobs died and the neighborhoods became increasingly unsafe.

This video in no way reflects what the rest of Northwest Indiana looks like. Gary is surrounded by many fast growing suburbs like: Crown Point, Hobart, Merrilville, Griffith, Munster, Highland, Schererville, St. John and Dyer. To the west of Gary lies Hammond, which is a city of the same size of Gary. Although Hammond has it's older parts of town (North Hammond), the city has remained an overall nice city as many of the rest of the communities of NWI have.

I live in NW Indiana next to Gary and can tell you that these pictures speak for themselves say what you want but like my ol' pappy used to tell me, "You can't polish a turd". "Gary has it's nice places" sure as does a gas chamber the schools are underperforming the entire state and nation, is many times the murder capital of the world, looks like the center of Baghdad after shock and awe.

for everyone that doesn't know, this not how all of gary looks. of course this person went out of their way to get HORRIBLE pictures of gary. there are nice places in gary and wonderful programs. We have one of only a few performing arts highschools in Indiana, and five star schools here. we are an industrial city and we have BEAUTIFUL beaches here. and sure we have some broken down buildings, but hopefully those will be fixed in the future

I grew up there. It went to hell starting in 1975. By 1988, it was at it's worst. In last 5 years, it's come back some. As in along west 5th ave.

I made a stone living in Gary in the '80's scrapping out building and gutting apartments of lumber. Never got arrested!I gutted about a third of the Lorraine apartments completely of 2x12's with a chain saw, 'til you could see the sky from the basement! Incredibly, i The depot in the start of the video, I took 1000's of paving bricks and sold 'em!
