cull/manage humans first. seems we are the only species that has overcome our "predators", yet, we are too selfish & ego-driven to control ourselves. Oh, but, we have the right to control the population of other species first? BAH!!!
Sadly its not only the elephant that has lost its 'space' to live in. Rather than focusing on culling - we should all be actively trying to re-establish and grow spaces for all animals - Many people broadcast their emotional views from cities - cities, and farmland have driven large animals into small protected spaces. These spaces have to be managed or they will simply dissapear - sometimes the management of these spaces include horrible truths. Watch all three parts of the documentary.
we the humans think ourselves smart and came up with the brilliant idea of conservation but little did we know the elephants were gonna pay for our feeble attempts in playing god. problem remains there are too many humans walking the earth. let H1N1 be the cure to the planet. modern medicine is the culprit of all that. if we all could live only 45 years and not 60 or 70 then half the planet's ecological issues would be gone.
Culling is one of many management controls for elephants in the Kruger. The three parts of this video explain the options, the video does not promote culling but highlights the fact that our way of life (i.e. the destruction of elephant habitat by human development) has left very little space - mostly all fenced - in which to try and save what little wildlife we have left on this planet! Management of elephants has become essential to preserve what little space we have left for wildlife!
Kruger is a big place (the size of Israel.) Although all management options are being explored - a combination of options have to be considered. Elephant social structures are all about families (and especially babies) so contraception options may have a negative impact on the whole species!
Contraception only lasts 12 months - every elephant will need to be darted (and marked) -contracepted and redone in 12 months - a population of 16 000 in a space the size of Isreal just isn't practical.
Thank you for answering, you say: "Elephant social structures are all about families (and especially babies) so contraception options may have a negative impact on the whole species!"
What about what fishmarc mentioned, is it so that with an overpopulation of elephants the bodies of the females regulate their own Anti Conception Hormones.
What about neutering the males, that is a onetime operation only.
Sorry its taken so long - I've been in the bush. The problem with neutering males is that it is not reversable. A natural disease could happen and wipe out a population simply because they couldn't breed through it - it is a very difficult scenario but if there was an elephant disease, and no reproductive males in that area. We would probably loose all elephants. The other thing to bear in mind is that only the biggest, strongest males get to breed. I don't think we should be neutering them?
People all over the globe must made to choose for smaller family's, so our kind can live in harmony with wildlife and their wild habitats.
If there's ecologic damage then think of other measures than culling elephants, rangers of the Kruger Park are talking about corridors trough the mountains to other protected area's.
Spay or neuter them is that a possibility?
The wish to cull elephants looks more like wanting to harvest their ivory for economic gains.
I can't believe some of the statements in this video. They were forced to cull the elephants. Maybe it's time the monsters called human cull themselves. Lets start with the ones who drive different species out of their land and then sell their body parts, for Gods sake. Unbelievable.
The most serious environmental issues currently are the amount of space we as humans have destroyed - Animals no longer have natural areas to operate in - whether culling happens or not is not really the issue - Every bullet that leaves a rifle is because we have already destroyed their space - and keep making spaces for only us to live in!
thanks for commenting back to me beardedheron. It sickens me that any animal should loose thier lives because of the all greedy human. One day I'm sure, humans will destroy this planet. They sure are working on it a little at a time arne't they. I've seen the videos where they find some kind of important escuse to kill animals. Blood thirsty tyrants. Thats what I call them.
A grassland produces more grazing for herbivores and predators. The elephants will self correct and that has been scientifically proven. The females will stop concieving when overpopulated. This is Bullshit.
The Kruger is not a grassland! It is one of the world's most biodiverse areas consisting of 17 ecozones and a huge diversity of animals and plants. The mandate is to protect the biodiversity not a single species.
All species will ultimately come in line with balances (your comment self correct) but when there is limited space and not enough time - the elephants will have a very serious impact on other animals becuase of their ability to change diets. Look at Amboseli national park in Kenya?
Beard: I understand your point but, if SA 2 top scientists say that there is not enough proof to consider culling at this time, why are government officials so willing to force this issue thru? Frankly, it's the money. The human population continues to boom, reducing habitat for all species. You can cull and cull and there will always be more humans wanting more land. This is not the answer and others have been proposed. I think they should be looked at first. At some point this must end.
We do cull humans. It's called war.Population control is what it's all about, and war is a necessity.

Is there any possibly way to nuder (sp?) about half of the elephants?
funnystuffromfriends 2 years ago
Unfortunately, this this is unreliable. It is also likely less cost-effective than culling. It has been tried though, with unsuccessful results.
On another note, I cannot find the second section of this documentary. Could anyone direct me to it?
Thanks

it saddens and disgusts me that this video excusing the culling of elephants was not only made, but promoted on youtube thereafter.
shame on you.

Let us educate people around the globe to raise smaller families, to live in harmony with wildlife and their habitats.
Is culling elephants really necessary?
What about relocating spaying and neutering elephants
Corridors to other wildlifeparks like I heard one of the Kruger rangers say as an option.
A combination of all those possible solutions will do the job.
Or is it the desire to harvest their bodyparts like Androclestipster mentioned.
What about selfregulation Fishmarc spoke of.
