Wow! Seriously, to have power in the media is to wield a weapon of mass mental destruction. Any psychologist knows (as well as all governments) that influencing or controlling the media and its messages, blatant & subliminal alike, is crucial to influencing the masses. That's normally true. However, once the pendulum of change has begun to swing in the other direction, there's not stopping it. These commercials are a desperate, if futile, attempt to thwart that inevitable change.
Its rediculous how they define straight guys that like to take care of themselves and care more for clothing etc metrosexual, its not a diferent sexuality lol its just a diferent personality.
im homosexual and that a sexuality im atracted to man.
but someone that its called metrosexual because he like to look good its just too funny
Um....there are masculine gay men too. And the host is actually repeating a right-wing myth at the beginning when he says that gay men have more disposable income than straight men - not true. Straight men with the same level of education make about about 8% more than gay men. The only one of these ads that's really homophobic is the Miller Lite one. The rest gear towards masculinity, but like I said, us masculine gay men exist too, and the ads don't state a sexual orientation.
The one that irks me is one I see for some phone (I think a Windows phone?) that runs regularly on Hulu... this guy is trying on a pink shirt and black tight pants and he texts his friends "Does this outfit make me look like a fag?" Well... no he doesn't say that. They couldn't get away with that. They wisely coded it in the ad as "Does this outfit make me look like an ice skater?" since I guess they couldn't say what they really wanted to say. His friends laugh at him and his gf is ashamed.
Cheap cologne, horse-piss beer (LITE horse-piss beer: the LITE THREATENS MY MASCULINITY!), and a speedway...
Frankly, I'm not surprised that these are ads aren't being targeted toward my demographic.
As for the Old Spice commercial... eh, it was a parody of the archetypal man from romance novels. It wasn't a put-down of non-"masc, STr8-acting" men. That is, unless you think being shirtless riding a white horse on a beach with a cardigan around your neck makes you a man's man.
I just wanted to say this. People think the best way to "manliness" is to follow a list of rules..actually it's showing how insecure you are. I know it sounds cliche but it's true. The more homophobic you are, the more I'll wonder if you're trying too hard.
i love him, how he talks about how stereotypes are stupid because they are! i know lots of manly gay guys, no joke i really do. if you saw them, you would never ever know. same with bi guys, would never know that they were also into boys, very manly but its who they are. look at Rock Hudson, very manly also very gay, Fred Astaire very feminine also very straight(or bi at the least!)
Somone claimed that this is gay discrimination? Hmm....Looks far from it. Looks like the exact image gay people put out there, n thats being really nice. I'm gay and let me tell you, this is a slap on the wrist for all the times I've been stolen from, lied to, USED FOR SEX, fake friends, n above all the promiscuitiy that runs rampant in the gay world that everyone ignores. GROSS! Close ur legs, act like normal people, have morals, and maybe you'll be treated like a normal person! Men are Men!
@Delinquent21m So you've been screwed over. Welcome to the world! Their sexuality is not what caused it or whatever you're thinking. No, it's not fair that people did those things to you. But that doesn't mean you should be angry at the whole gay community, or perpetuate stereotypes (promiscuity). Actually, the average gay man has the same number of partners as the average straight man. I've been hurt by straight folks who were all you listed, that doesn't mean all straight folks suck.
@Delinquent21m And the queer-on-queer hate really needs to stop. It's the only thing worse than straight-on-queer hate, because it's exactly why straight people think it's okay to screw the shit out of us. "Hey, I know a gay man, and even he said all this about gay men was true so obviously it is and that justifies my hatred!" Uh, no, buddy. Pretending these are accurate representations of average gay life is like saying Gossip Girl is an accurate representation of average straight life.
I feel like the old spice ad isn't inherently homophobic. I feel like it's targeting male sexuality in general. The dude went on Ellen. Neil Patrick Harris has been an actor for their ads. I feel like gays just can't hate on old spice
I'm not really effeminate so unless I thought about it, these ads wouldn't offend me too much. Although is it really surprising that a trend has changed? Give it another couple years and the trend will change again.
xDxDxD I love watching this awesome show, already the stupidity of all those hater comments is comedy enough. But still, so far nothing can top Brian Safi. He's a god! xD
being part of the gay webcomics community, i know us gay lovers consider that old spice commercial VERY gay in a good way and have turned it into a meme for our gay characters to enact.
@joeratti I know lots of gay men and only about 1/4 of them are a little effeminate, none of them are girly. But, y'know, arguing is besides the point. Not every gay guy is girly, but most of them don't care as much about the men's "behaviour stereotypes". Because that's what it is: Men don't cry, men are tough - women are passive and crybaby-ish... because society tells them to be that way. Many of the women stereotypes are loosened, why can't men accept that "toughness" it not necessary?
@Wasserbienchen yes girls are emotional creatures by nature and men are tougher by nature not because society tells them its so. your confused because society wants to change roles of men and women for the sake of gays and whatever else "society" wants. this is a big reason why people dont want to accept homosexuals.
its very sick and perverted in the head how someone classifies them self by their sexual acts. they arent black, white or american they are gays. thats fucked in the head.
@joeratti Gender theory is a feminist theory, not related much to the queer community. It is as fucked up to identify primarily by what's between your legs, but we do it. We do it because we built it. How do you explain the tough women that emerged recently? Those who weren't told you have to marry and get kids? These are little changes, of course, we still get barbies and make-up for presents, but it's okay for a girl to play lego and climb trees. She won't get shoutet at for it. (contd.)
@joeratti The thing is that boys are much less allowed to play with barbies or wear make-up. And if they do, it's considered "sick". It's not because boys NATURALLY don't wear make-up, or don't play barbie. Hell, barbie and make-up are not natural at all. It's a society thing. We judge our children's actions in relation to their gender (or, more correctly, SEX) all the time. Blue or pink, cars or barbies, football or ballet... The truth is: Men can cry. Women can do sports. (contd.)
@joeratti It's got nothing to do with sexuality - but we consider it to make a difference. Ever wondered why the less women are worth in society, acceptance for homosexual men also decreases? I think it's got to be related to this issue men seem to have with their masculinity - differenciating between men and women like they have to prove something. Act tough, act "manly", whatever that is. It's a biological difference and like others it can have a psychological impact, but... (contd.)
@joeratti at the end of the day, it's just overrated. It doesn't mean we should neglect gender issues, because they practically are still relevant. But we should all think about it and question the fact that we so readily assume some things about men and other things about women.
Gayness does not equal campness; but campness is NOT WRONG. Male/Female are sociologically very connotated variables.
That is all, and if you wish to read more, google Judith Butler. (I don't support all, but it's ok)
I disagree on this guys point though I agree with his points most of the time. Being a sissy and being gay are two totally different things. I'm sure there are plenty of bad ass mother fuckers in the Army right now who are gay and would not find these commercials offensive. Just because gay people have a tread of being more in touch with the feminine side of things does not mean there can't be plenty of exceptions. The manliness derives from times of war, not from being heterosexual.
wow i didnt know sandwiches and liking dogs was gay. thank you so much, american advertisers...
