  • His mother was my French teacher in High School. I met him when he was about eight and was "Little Michel." She later went on to teach in Brooklyn College. She was one of my most inspiring teachers. His father was also a teacher. They both really wanted to share their knowledge, like Andre-Michel.

  • He is super nice. Back around 1980 he was my next door neighbor. He practiced all day. He was a real perfectionist. But he always played the same warmup in the morning. Eventually, it bugged the heck out of my roommate on weekend mornings, especially when she wanted to sleep late. So I asked him if he could change it a little bit. Yes, he said, he could vary it a little bit.

This was on 72nd & Riverside. But he didn't have enough room, with his pianos so he moved.

  • The grandeur of the opening by both pianists pales to that of the Rachmaninoff version on this site. As for Schub; let the young man interpret and avoid imposing your vision. There are many ways to play this piece.
