  • British people always seem to comment on race/religion. That's the only thing on their narrow minds. People who don't agree with are just jealous because they aren't pretty

  • It's funny how the feminists are usually the most racist/sexist of the lot.

  • The feminist looks like a joyless pig who is 20 lbs. overweight. The pretty one is not only smarter, but more physically appealing. Just sour grapes it seems to me.

  • The " feminist " is pathetic. the fit one seems nice.

  • its funny, you'd think the "educated" feminist would be sharp enough not to go toe to toe with a law student. secoundly, she is and idiot for not doing any homework on her and throwing out that whole muslim thing. little known rule, beauty can come with brains, and homeliness doesn't always come with a sharp mind.

  • The girl claiming 'I'm a muslim'....has a muslim name but she is not practicing her religion in any shape whatsoever...in fact she looks like a right old slag if you ask me.....she's muslim by name only........

  • @maxlogica How do you know she's not practising her religion?

  • She's a crap feminist

  • And then these feminists wonder why they are not taken seriously when they do have a noble goal :p.

In stead of making the wages for women and men equal they bicker against other women who do what they want. They are kind of like Greenpeace, ruining the actions of other women on the same side by making themselves look ridicules.

If beauty pageants were a male invention there would be a wet t-shirt part in there :p. And what about bodybuilders? They have to actually take steroids and testosterone

  • That anna girl is a shame of a feminist.

  • "I didn't see any Muslim woman taking part because they can't" - "Err.. I'm a muslim" = EPIC FAIL

  • Interesting, interesting and a bit sad to read the comments on here. I guess the jerks really come out to play here eh. Whatever it is, people can have their prejudices but as a woman I have to say, be strong, laugh in the face of jerks and don't conform.

  • @Renabulous just label your opponents jerks rather than people with opposing views, the only purpose it has is showcasing the lack of confidence you have in your argument. To me this is as question of societys standards vs a persons competetive liberty.

I think people should acknowledge that it takes some effort into looking good, nature isn't the only stakeholder, diet and excerise are just as if not more important. Also personality is very important, arrogance is very unattractive

  • @maosef I need to work on articulating myself, I dont have a confidence problem in my arguments. I believe in what I am saying otherwise I wouldnt be posting it.

It DOES take effort to look good, I know I changed my life around on purpose wanting to be the best I can be in every way.

  • @maosef oh and i meant what I said about calling some people jerks. Putting people down- jerks do that. If you have an opposing view, you dont need to put people down and having an opposing view doesnt make you a jerk, calling someone a name, being rude and calling them out unnecessarily that makes you a jerk in my opinion. You don't need to attack people to make a point.

  • Feminism, as outdated as national socialism. Can`t we get rid of it already?

  • @FranzKarlWeber Many of the feminist goals have been reached in western countries, but there are still many equality issues regarding legislation at an international level. Did you know a woman in saudi arabia cannot legally represent herself in court? Or allowed to drive? Or even allowed to own land? And even in western countries payment is still unequal and women are constantly discouraged from entering mathematics and science careers. There is still alot to be done

  • They CHOOSE to enter... While the feminists who don't enter blame men for objectification. Women compete with women for being recognized as the most beautiful. You will never stop women from wanting to be admired for their beauty, and those who aren't will complain about it due to a lack of attention.

  • Women compete with women to be viewed as the most beautiful. They choose to enter!!! But, feminism -in this case the girls who don't enter - blame men for objectifying women. They WANT to be admired!! You will neve stop women from wanting to be desired for their beauty.

  • I'd stick my winky in both of 'em. That should stop them from bickering.

  • BRAP REPPING MA MANDEM TSR

  • Bloody hell, nice Here Come the Girls. Why do they always play that :@

  • WOOOO TSR!!

  • TSR FTW

  • Absolutely world class finish. brilliant job mate awesome fatastic classic legend

  • DAME 4REEL----ABSOLUTELY SPOT ON---Some of the models that participated help in my charity fashion shows--they Have way more personality then these labelling fools!

  • For the mere fact that the feminist girl thinks ALL muslim girls are veiled, then there's clearly a problem with her level of intelligence!!!. She's the one that we ought to call STUPID. kmt.

The LSE Feminist society/club/association are also into some sort of fashion!! They're just jealous that the girls who took part in the contest were not judged on THEIR type of fashion.

  • If there is freedom to organize public events there should also be freedom to criticize vulgar and unsuccessful ones!

  • Feminist girl is really stupid. If you're gonna put yourself out there then at least prepare an argument!

  • the feminist had very strong points:1 beauty contexts shouldn't be realated to academic institutions. 2 LSE is an international university and promotion of a particular idea of beauty can be offensive for other cultures, with different conceptions of beauty. Sonia's arguments are astonishingly superficial:the fact that someone is at LSE does't mean that s/he is smart or intelligent; this is vulgar common sense, not a cogent argument!

  • Personally I don't give a shit about beauty contests, I think they're pretty pointless.

However, could you please explain how on earth they are offensive to other cultures? And why should we care anyway?

If there was a beauty contest in India, would a group of white Brits find that offensive because it was promoting a 'particular idea of beauty'?

You could argue that University Challenge should be banned because it promotes a particular kind of intelligence.

  • I think that the strongest point is the one that a university should not be associated with a beauty contest: the instrumentalization of beauty is overwelming and from universities I am expecting less superficiality. Eventhough I have nothing against beauty in itself. But again I think that beauty contests are more about fashion than beauty... I would say that there is a vulgarization of beauty, which indeed is becoming overwelming...

  • There is definitely an obsession with beauty and youth these days, and yes a university should have better things to do than run beauty contests.

  • So we basically agree... Usually I am quite moderate with feminist ideas, which sometimes I see as exagerations... going back to study now after youtube session at lse library...

  • I don't understand why people think that different cultures around the world today have different concepts of beauty. Of course, beauty is minimally a social construct, but it is mostly biological. That is, attraction on a primal level is pretty much biological. If you showed a picture of, say...Stacey Dash to a man in Japan, a man in India, a man in the US, a man in the UK, a man in Italy, a man in Uganda, a man in Russia, and a man in Brazil, all would think she is fucking hot.

  • "Andrewko1218" LOL. That is true. I though Jenifer Lopez was super hot before I learned English, and I still think she is Hot.

  • @AndrewKo1218 haha, that's true.

but, i think in part that is because in recent decades we have developed more of a world culture than in the past. we have simplified beauty across cultural lines because those lines are so much less visible now. it wasn't always this way.

in ancient Mayan culture, crossed eyes were attractive.

in some places of South-East Asia and Africa, elongated necks are still attractive.

this is only the modern concept of beauty being expressed & fed by society.

  • So it's ridiculous that feminists hide behind this notion that standards of physical beauty of women vary from culture to culture. It comes down to symmetry, hip to waste ratio, youth, and other measurable factors.

  • Sonia, maryia, sohaila abdul-rahman are real bitches, they all shame to islam and most of all afghans. They can be found at Boujiis west kensington normally on weekends. Im suprised such dogs r given opportunity at bbc to chat.

  • "I didn't see any Muslim women taking part"

    "Im a muslim"

    How stupid can you get....

  • WOW! An angry, UGLY, stupid feminist opposing a PRETTY, smart, SELF-THINKING woman,,,,,HOW ODD!!!!lol

  • what do you mean stupid and smart? your superficiality is honestly is scary and also a sign of stupidity.

  • grammar fail

  • woahhhh! the feminist girl kinda didnt have an argument... i think sonia abdul did really well, i wanted to be contestant for this years one but too busy, next year im definately gonna take part! wooo xxx

  • "I don't see Muslim women taking part"

    "ERR IM A MUSLIM"

    LOL

  • osman! it's me Kunaal...lol this shit is funny

  • @osmanjunaid

she was right, muslim women who are not just namesake muslims don't participate in these degrading events

  • It's pitiful that this is the level many modern feminists have reached.

I thought feminism was about enabling women with the freedom to do as we please in the way men can? Silly me.

Where once we had uptight school-marms telling us what proper girls should and should not do, we now have this class of stuffy, self-described intellectuals who demand everyone ascribe to their values. Ugh...

Stop trying to force people into roles, and allow people to do as they please!

  • Eh, subscribe not ascribe... not sure why I wrote that.

    Where's that coffee gone?!

  • we're all thinking that mate, i go to SOAS and it's so funny to watch!

  • @Makkitotosimew

i reckon the only way to stop the exploitation of women is for them to wear A complete veil and then tell the people, *judge me for who i am and not my sexy body", and then they will get respect and not raped and recognised as decent women

  • @Makkitotosimew Its not "modern feminists" is a very select group of women who are tarnishing the name of feminism by trying to force women to, like you say, ascribe to their values. Its so sad that this is the negative image that feminism today is acquiring. Instead of wasting time and effort on discussing whether women should be in beauty pageants how about tackling the equal payments issue? Or helping womens rights in Latin America and the Middle east?

  • @AbigailVictoria23 I entirely agree. That's why I was careful not to make blanket aspersions against feminism. I'm a feminist myself, albeit not of the hectoring killjoy busybody variety in this video. :)
