ElvisFish411, I beg to differ but the snapper at the bridge are Schoolmasters and the snapper in the back country are Grey aka Mangrove snapper. We have caught literally 1000s of each species. Oddly enough this year, 2011, we caught very few Schoolmasters.
I just returned from the Keys. The weather and the Dolphin aka Mahi Mahi fishing was great. However the Tuna, Snapper, and the 7 Mile Bridge were not that good. The water was crazy clear inshore and the fish were tougher to fool.
@Shuckers86 What is with everyone calling dolphin "mahi mahi". That is a Hawaiian term...Florida isn't Hawaii. I'm just curious why people do it...I see it over and over...we aren't calling all other fish by their Hawaiian names.
Live shrimp for the bridge snapper. Cut pinfish for the mangrove snapper. I just returned from the Keys and we caught many Dolphin (Mahi Mahi) and the snapper were chewing at the bridge.
@MrNuggy420 I have always had the best luck with grouper on live fish, cigar minnows are my favorite. Jacks will hit live shrimp, live fish, and lures well.
Depending on where you are up to 15' in the channel to dry land at low tide. I always look for deep water next to shallow with good current flow, especially for snapper.
Any bait shop has shrimp. They are tough to get sometimes in the summer. Pinfish can be caught all over the place but I have the best luck on the back side grass beds. Put out a chum bag and fish with small #8 hooks. Use small pieces of shrimp for bait. When you get down to the Keys but a Top Spots chart for the area around Torch and try some of the areas on the chart. There are plenty of spots near Torch you can explore so you don't have to run all the way to the 7 Mile Bridge.
Ya were gonna be fishing under the 7 mile bridge. I dont no if u know were it is but i live at big torch key. Is there any good spots to catch pinfish for live bait also were can u get live shrimp. Just moved down here so i dont no a lot of places yet
We use a jetty anchor. Which is an anchor made of rebar and a pipe. We rig the anchor by attaching the chain to the bottom of the anchor then using zip ties at the top of the anchor through the chain. Usually 3 zip ties work. If the anchor gets stuck the zip ties break and the anchor is pulled in backwards.Rings are at top and bottom of the anchor. We also tie a bouy to the end of the anchor line so if you hook a large fish you can throw the anchor line out of the boat to chase the fish.
scene278, Are you going to the 7 mile bridge? If you are, look for deeper water near bridge structure. We use live shrimp, gulps, and cut pinfish. In the video under the bridge Tanner was using live shrimp. In the open water we catch larger Snapper on cut pinfish.
That looks fun can't wait to get my own boat
