ive had my 84 for 11 years and at 102,000 miles ive had no mechanical issues but a starter and a fan temperature switch failure....they are not unreliable just old and not all that common therefore the differences from a regular single tbi system arent usually known or understood by the mechanics.
even though they have plenty of torque they are pretty underpowered thanks to emissions and restrictive manifold and weak tbi assemblies from a mass produced 4 banger at the time.
I'll tell you a story my dad trying to fix a problem similar. But he had a 79' suburban with a Q-jet and when he looked down to look at the CARB. Flame from the carb came back up and burn his eyebrows. Be careful out there.
first check the fuel pressure and volume, it takes less than an hour to change the pump from the top, . then the cat for restriction, pressure gauges that screw into the oxygen sensor holes just for testing are available. then pull the distributer .. change the pick up coil.. change the ignition coil, be sure to change the capacitor harness in the distributer. when the pick up coils go bad.. they send weird signals to the module and ecm.. the coils in the cap leak high voltage..
what you guys must not know is there are kits avalible out there to convert the cfi intakes to dual four barrel carbs just like the ones on a 69 DZ 302 car your problem is either the throttle position censor or the fuel pump is weak i had that happen on my 87 pickup
they were very troublesome I had a 82 camaro with the 305 cross fire WHAT A DOG!!!!!! My 84 mercury cougar 5.0 TBI would walk all over it! The best thing G.M did was ditch this system for the tuned port injection!!!!!
@3CVETTE that what it is duh! its just two seperate tbi units tbi = throttle body injection and i see two throttle bodies on this car so i dont get what your saying you mean the single throttle body like on the chevrolet trucks and 305 camaros? this is it same thing just both injectors arent housed in the same throttle body but it works exactly the same!
I had the same problem, exactly the same thing, I change de ecm and back to notmal, before I replace the timing chain, rotor spark plugs and wire, clean the injectors, new fuel pump, new fuel filter, check all bacuum lines, and nothing helped.
Try a new ecm or use a HAM adapter with a newer ECC.
put a manometer on the tbi's and set to 6 pounds in drive. use the ideal stop screw on the rear carb and the blance screw on the front tbi. u most use a manometer. u will have to cut the blance screw lose on the front tbi and pull out the plug to get to the hiden ideal stop screw on the rear tbi. carbs should stay blanced when u rev it .if not time to rebuild and or check the likage on the rear tbi throttle plates need to open at the same time. make sure the arm is not bent.
1984 corvette half good half pain in the ass. I have one but I fixed all the problems start buy port and polishing the intake and then put some 454 injectors with big fuel pump dont worry the motor needs gas. Get a chip and replace ecu if you have to. My 1984 runs 12 seconds with crossfire injection its just fine tweeking that helps.
Crossfire had way too many problems so everyone hates the fuckers. Gm needed to take more time with this design before slapping it on their flagship performance car. Stupid fuckers. It can be made to run right though, you just have to find someone who still knows about this system.
that was the problem gm did take the time and made a crapy intake for it to make the TPI look better just buy porting the runers out to mach the gaskets a crossfire vette will walk a tpi vette the sad part is the stock intake dosent even have enughf material to a real good port with out having to weld in more
My uncle has an 84 and the tps sensor has to be resistance set and gm sensors suck so it could be the tps sensor. and those maniflds ar known to leak after time.. like NOW time. and no it's not too much fuel. those 2 2injectors have a big job.. to supply fuel to a corvette 350. if it was too much fuel there is a reason why the computer would dump too much fuel in. could be a module in distributor.
dats definetly the timing or the throttel position sensor. im sure of it. mine had the same thing. gas looks normal.the timing is to advanced or the voltage on the TPS is out of balance.
@AndyYpsilon81 Not sure if you've got it figured out or not, but mine does the same thing, and my injectors are bad and are flooding the engine, (at autozone it's 110 for front, 90 for rear) both iacv are bad (70 each I believe) and tps is bad (50), I would most likely say it's the injectors on yours though.
I'd have a vacuum check on it You may have a gasket leak oon the manifold or something with the top plate where the manifold meets the tbi plate.......theres NOTHING Wrong with having a crossfire Vette That engine has SOOO MUCH POTENTIAL once you have it DIALED IN by a CORVETTE SPECIALIST......it will be purring like a cat ...I have an '84
Your timing is wayyyy offff

when flames are coming out of a carb or throttle body, it usually means a plug is firing while a valve is open. could be timing.

lt1 or tunesd port manifold bolts right up.
Add a high pressure fuel pump
run an isolated computer for engine function and tandem sensors for chassis computer function.
275 hp and up depending on year of motor
99 ls1 is best.

How much hp does a stock crossfire engine in a 84 vette bring in?
criminalcontent17 2 years ago
@criminalcontent17 1984 corvette with cross fire injection about 205 hp that"s it!

GM should have just used the tbi setup on this engines it would have avoided these issues.

You probably need a fuel pump or a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS).

i think you have a bad vacum leak/intake leak
remeber this model engine uses vacum to meter gas so one leak throws it all at a wack
