This is just beautiful.... I can hardly imagine how many hours you studied to learn this long piece by heart and then play it with such confidence and expression. Also, the elegance of your gestures more than makes up for the lack of trousers...
Darnit, I only wanted to hear the first few minutes to see if you were any good and now have to hear the whole thing. Your an awesome performer. I dream I was good enough to play this.
@OrangeSodaKing Cool might see you there! I'll be going back hopefully if I can get some sort of scholarship. You're gonna have a great time trust me :)
I remember the first time I saw this piece. I was paging through my Schubert booklet and came across the first page of this piece. I thought to myself "this sounds nice. I think I'll sight read through it once"
Great House, Great Piano Great strange green ball up, It is a plant? This is great! can you sahre me the sheet music??? or can u put a tutorial for how to play 4:45 to 5:27 Please

Extra kudos for posting a direct performance response to one of today's pianist icons. If only more pianists had such courage, music and listeners in general would benefit greatly. The performance here is quite solid, resisting any temptation to take things to the limit, and instead focuses moset heavily on the pleasantry throughout the music.

WHAT A DELIGHT ! After this morning performance, I would have offered more than a cup of coffee to Mr. Nel. More like a 3-egg omelet, 3 links, 3 strips and a stack of 3 blueberry pancakes !

humm, the best interpretation of this beautiful piece as far as i know.:) playing i want,as i hear...(as i can't..) no hummering,no artifical sweetness,no exaltation,no supeman's tempo,no over-rubato-ing,just human voices and simplicity.i feel same when Radu Lupu plays.two Schubertpianists until now. thank you.
Great job, and just a small historical fact for all you Schubert lovers. Schbert wrote this piece while wearing just his underwear and a pair of socks. ok' i'm lying. ;)
After meeting the charming Bill and Anton while on holiday in Barbados, we were prompted to look Anton up and how delighted we are that we did, this piece brings tears to my eyes and I am now a lifelong admirer.
my brother is playing this (he's a music major) and when he comes to visit during the holidays, he plays this so loudly that i can't think... it's a great piece though. i've started to try to learn it. harder than it sounds.
Anton, you sound as great as ever! I miss you. Didn't I hear you play this in Aspen in '88? Oh my god, I'm older now than you were when you were my teacher.
Something about his finger and wrist technique seems like it would be impossible for him to play this horribly difficult piece. If memory serve me correctly, once when Schubert played this piece he rose from the piano in frustration and said, "Let the devil play it!" The devil posted here is doing an admirable job.
Excellent performance. (Nice steinway too). This is one of my new favorite pieces after I first heard it the other week. I used to be anti schubert for no apparent reason. This piece changed that. Excellent job with voicing of large chords and singing melodies.
Wow...wooow...such an awesome performance, so much power and stamina while keeping control of tempo and diction, just phenomenal. I remember there was a plane flying overhead halfway into the piece, but just...wow...i didnt get to read the credits, they were too fast and too blury
I think the coffee was probably done by the time he'd got a few minutes in, but I'm glad he carried on. His dynamic range and sense of voicing (in the old sense of soft accompaniment rather than louder melody) is quite fantastic.
Don't get discouraged by the shorts, yellow shirt and the pianist's bare feet! This is a tremendous performance, that fuses utmost virtuosity (it's been a while since I heard the murderously difficult octaves that start at 5:19 played with such speed and confidence) and genuine poetry (the part playing and voice leadings in the Adagio are exquisite).

Anyone knows that this is a bravura from the FRSM/ FTCL Recital? Humorous! :P

Is that "plant" a Chuly? I'm pretty sure since I saw a red Chuly bowl also. By the way, Anton, your place is just gorgeous! Keep "practicing!" Syl

I've always loved the finale on this piece. It goes on forever. Sounds like something Victor Borge might have come up with.
