This was beautiful. i hated it. and i loved it. It was a movie where almost nothing turned out for the better, and just about everything that could go wrong, did. it also showed truth and sides of situations that not many people talk about. maybe they know about it anyway, but seeing it on film and hearing it makes it all the more clear. seeing lil mago treat smiley with love and brotherhood almost made me like the gang. at the same time, you see the brutality of it all and it snaps you back.

I saw this movie a couple years ago. As usual, foreign movies such as these catch my attention because they are dealing with relevant issues. I loved this film and ask anyone who wants to watch a good story, great characters and be transported to a world they only hear about to see it. If I had to put together a cultural pack of movies, I would link these with Slumdog Millionaire, City of God, and Motorcycle Diaries.

I just finished watching this movie and it was extremely good. I am a U.S. Citizen and I have to say that these foreign movies like memoirs of a geisha, slumdog millionaire, and this one are extremely good! They actually show you REAL ISSUES and not just fantasy BS like most American movies do.

The director is a white American, it's entirely in English, produced to appeal to the US market, and it's based off a book by a white American guy that many geishas and members of the worldwide Japanese community denounce as being inaccurate and exoticizing.

@15gmt Maybe you're just not aware of & or not watching the right US movies. It often does come down to economics though. Movies/Film is an "industry". They do need to make movies that will turn a profit. There are many great US movies though. Anyway, if anything, people should be aware that there are ALSO many excellent foreign films out there. Soviet era war/historical films are cool. Have you seen "Osama"? About a young Afghan girl disguised as a boy, during an era of Taliban control.
