Medical costs are the reason car insurance is so high - and the reason for lawyers making millions (50% of court awards). Single payer would eliminate that. No wonder insurance companies and lawyers are against it. The US has the highest per capita medical costs in the world, and in 34th place for actual care.

Do all of you single payer advocates know the specifics of Medicare? IMHO Medicare sucks. They charge you a minimum of $97 per month (after you've paid for it all of your life) and it's loaded with so many co-pays and deductibles that you need to buy additional health insurance to keep it from bankrupting you. My husband is disabled and eligible for Medicare. I'm still workin to keep him off of Medicare and on my employer's policy. Be careful what you ask for.

I'm sorry, but isn't the solution obvious when he gets to 5:30? If he's concerned about upsetting the status quo by suddenly providing single-payer Medicare to everyone (as opposed to just the 65+ crowd), why not just lower the age limit for Medicare by one year per year, until everyone's covered?

That's the kind of sensible, single-payer argument that ought to be discussed by the health care panel. If single-payer advocates were invited, that is.

Insurance companies need to get out of the system,period. Even with good health insurance if you become seriously ill you will go bankrupt because of deductibles and presciption cost.

Medicare requires co-pays and deductibles too. The deductible for a hospital stay under Medicare is $1068. It's amazing how many people think Medicare is the answer.
