I guess the purpose was to make it easier for little children who're not familiar with English - it's easier to remember "Chip and Chap" than "Chip and Dale" in a foreign language. :)
(and it's way better than what they were called before: "Ahörnchen und Behörnchen", meaning "Squirrel-A and Squirrel-B" xD)
@Gedankenmelodie you underestimate children's brain power ^_^' They can remember 4 letters. What I really had problems with as a kid were Duck Tales ducklings. Still can't tell one from another, no talking about fitting colors XD Talk about poor personalization... Unlike Chip and Dale =P
