I always think of Matthew Shepard too.. I think the robins are all the "straight boys" and the only one that brings her that sweetness, that sugar (companionship)... is the one that gets canned for having a little sugar in him. "oh my God, what they did to you.. my sweet boy.. my sugar."
Oh sorry : Matthew Wayne Shepard (December 1, 1976 October 12, 1998) was a student at the University of Wyoming who was tortured and subsequently murdered near Laramie because he was gay. He was attacked on the night of October 6October 7, 1998 and died at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado, on October 12, from severe head injuries. His murder brought national as well as international attention to the issue of hate crime legislation at the state and federal levels.
She actually did a song about Matthew Shepard called "merman" I learned that when i looked at his wikipedia page. But what makes me think of him is when she says " whispered first :"just watch just watch what they do." then she sings "sweet boy when they find you what do you think theyll do? Sweet boy when they find you out.. your just perfect my sweet boy my sugar... bring me..etc
Here she seems to be saying "you're so sweet but still not enough", but she also says "he's so sweet but not enough for them" elsewhere. Isn't it just really beautiful, this part she added later to the originial song?
@janvanb32 Totally agree - that's why recordings like this and the version of sugar on the "still orbiting" cd from TVAB are my faves (compared to the earlier ones where she seems more restrained)
I have this DVD it's great. I watched it many times when I felt alone. It reminds me of someone who I used to love some very much. Thanks for sharing.
