Perhaps you should change the lives count icon from a Mario head to a Green Mushroom. That way, it could apply to both Mario and Luigi, and would also serve as a nice little way to differ from the original game.

This video is oudated. If you choose Mario, "M" is shown, while "L" is displayed if you choose Luigi. They also have slightly different sounds (Luigi's pitch is lower than Mario's).

Why does Mario's head show when Luigi has his hat off Frauber?

VL-Tone did the Luigi hack by "stretching" Mario polygons, and indeed it looks a bit strange without the hat. I can't and don't have the motivation to fix it, but it won't show up as Mario/Luigi will never lose his hat in this hack.

there's only 1 thing when luigi head hat is off it shows mario's head. i guess theres no hack for when mario hat's off i guess. Let's see the final version has luigi's head when hat is off. But great hack though I love it

When its released, it will be a final version with about 25 stars. Working on levels is sometimes painfully slow, so I choosed to work on just a few very elaborate levels/areas than having a lot of pointless stars.
