@olamina Please believe me when I tell you this and try it just for a 2 months. You may have better results if you change to washing your hair everyday (preferably with WEN or its substitute at Sallys) or every other day -- NO LONGER THAN THAT. Putting in Kimmaytube leave in conditioner or just plain Jamaican Black Castor oil (and sealing) after washing, then leaving it as short curly fro or twisting it as you wish. Trust me on this!
My deep condish consists of yogurt, coconut milk or coconut water, honey and sometimes molasses. 20 minutes and I am wash it out. Then I follow with Kimmaytube Leave-in (which I know you have used). And I braid my hair in 13 braids. Do a roll and tuck in the morning. This works for me and my hair has grown a lot. Once I started using ingredients from my kitchen my hair grew longer.
@ANuyorican No more mixology for me. I barely have time for my daily self-care. I think the products I have are fine. As far as I can tell this hair length is just frustrating.
I had the same problem like you. May the problem is that your hair is not liking commercial products and time to do your own simple homemade products. I use aloe vera gel (I buy the leaf from my supermarket) with jojoba oil as my shampoo or a Chagrin Valley shampoo bar. Both do not contain any products that are required for the liquid shampoo. My hair is moisturized and clean.
check out my channel and look at my hair regimen video...I where a lot of updo's and the sulfate free and deep conditioning is a must...also use moisturizer and seal everyday and you will see a difference
You told us what you use, but what about your technique? When you shampoo, do you use it on your scalp or all over from root to tip? I use it on my scalp and it feels very clean afterwards. When I used to use it on my hair--root to tip--my hair was much drier and didn't shine. When you braid/comb your hair, are you doing it too roughly or tightly? I apply water on my hair every night before I go to sleep with my scarf, and I noticed that helps me out tremendously. I also deep-condition...
@Pretoriafly...for a few minutes with coconut oil each time I wash my hair, which is 1-2 times a week. I never comb/brush my hair when its dry. With doing all these things, I have never gotten breakage yet and its growing nicely. I'm 16 months natural (my profile pic is me with relaxed hair) and my hair's a nice length right now--I'm content with it. Its a little shorter than my relaxed hair in the pic. Try using some new techniques before you introduce heat, is my humble suggestion.
You could be missing something. Did you get the book by Audrey Sivasothy? If the hair is breaking it could be because it either needs protein or moisture. Also not washing weekly causes hair breakage, or even not deep conditioning. Try getting her book and she breaks down afro textured hair for you.
Meh! It's like that sometimes. We've all been there. Look on the bright side... It's winter, so you can rock a mean head wrap or beanie with some jewelry and call it done. Cute look, warm head, and protected hair. SN: you also just gave me a new style to try (tuck & roll). It will get better. ((hugs))
@aunaptural1 - alas, I'm no head wrap girl. plus i can't be showing up at work with a headwrap on. i am the only black person up in there and i don't need to mess around doing anything "extra"
Aww...I am sorry to hear that you aren't having success with your hair care regime. I am going to give you a call sometime soon so we can figure this one out :) .
I agree with wlofton, I think everyone feels like that at one point. I would be to listen to your hair as far as products. If your hair doesnt like something, ditch it or modify it by adding what your hair does like. If I use products my hair hates it refuses to behave, acts ugly and throws a tantrum. I loved when you did that rollerset on your hair, it was very pretty. I think it makes a good starting point. Instead of a bang, maybe a pompadour going to the side, pin one or both sides up, etc.
@fyfloyd1 Yeah I just feel like I dont want to blow my paychecks on hair products. It just strikes me as silly. I mean, why does black hair have to be this crazy investment? I just don't want to be part of/encourage that anymore.
I did a rollerset yesterday but it wasn't much return on my time and energy. I guess if my focus is on simplifying the whole situation then I need to accept simple styles too.
Even in your negativity you still are humorous. " The shampoo that won't die", and " At least I still have hair on my head".
I literally had tears in my eyes from laughter.
Everyone goes through what you are going through. EVERYONE! Those video's don't get posted. Only by the brave few.
I like your hair. It's amazing when we watch other video's and have hair envy. There are people who watch your video's and wish for your hair. ~ Peace and Love ~
@finallynatural1 i wrote a response but it disappeared...i basically just said Ive watched all those youtubers EXTENSIVELY over the years. im no newbie. i just either am doing it wrong or not doing it enough. all i know is i have nothing particularly good or positive to report.
Don't get discourage their are so many youtubers that can help you. To begin, what I did was began a regimen.
Wash weekly and/or every two weeks, follow with condition, then deep condition, I then put my hair in a protective style. But the most important is to moisturize your hair daily or when needed.
