I never thought I would hear this lyric again. You Tube has brought this back.-Memories of St. Patrick's Concerts and school concerts in another time.
With access to Wikipedia, I have access to the cultural context of Joseph Schmidt (1904-42).
I did not know that Joseph was a heroic victim of Fascism in 1942.
My take on Joseph Schmidt and this lyric in particular in 2011, is the imperative to fight militarism which debases humanity by restricting true possibilities for change.
bravo! one of the truely great voices of the 20th century

In memory of the young victims of fascism in Norway in July 2011. How could this be happening in a new century?
