  • @MARMARR1 Yes, you are right and their early albums are quite good. But that was many years ago when they had relevence. Post- Joshua Tree (some may argue even earlier), they started losing the plot (imho, of course) especially with Bono. I especially like their 1980 debut, Boy.

  • all i can say is this is the best band ever, part from clash, pumpkins, coc twins, etc.

  • That woman with the migraine headache in the ad next to this video is hot!!

  • lol jet blacks a fucking legend

  • How fucking hot is this song!

  • the recent 'rock band' programme on bbc2 gave no mention to JJ in their 'best' bass player bit'absolute sacrolidge!!hewas the best bass player of his era,no question.[they had Tina Weymouth from Talking Heads who i respect but she aint got half the talent of Jean Jacques Burnel!!!!!!]

  • @kudge43 i totally agree my friend, tina weymouths bassline in once in a lifetime is a worthy shout, but JJ should have been top of the pile by far

  • best thing on totp 4 sure, great songs and they can play, nothing else can touch them

  • I miss the stranglers and ian dury and the clash, the 70's where great! sex and drugs and rock and roll!

  • One of my favourite TOTP moments. The Stranglers were supposed to be banned from the BBC after the Rock Goes To College fiasco in '78 & some problems with a dressing room door which got smashed in on a previous appearence - so for this to appear was a great surprise. Still haven't worked out the black armbands though!

  • Good to see Jet gettin in on the vocals....at the front!! Can't wait to see them on Fri!!

  • It is all wonderful

  • Nothing today can touch this stuff.

Green Day, Coldplay, U2- no way,boys- give it up!!

  • @crapple009

I quite agree, songs as good as this now nearly 30 yrs old are still being played and enjoyed by new listeners not even born when it was first released.

The original video the band made all dressed in choirboys cassocks and singing along in a church somewhere in leafy England was one of the finest.

  • @llandudnoboy Yes, the picture-sleeve of the 45 shows them dressed and singing as choirboys. The Stranglers' 45/ 12'' releases were always fine treats and VFM. Have pretty much most of them!

  • 1979!!!bliss

  • Guess what thats George Harrison on Keyboards very clever isnt he?

  • That was 1994 wasnt it? Ive read no mercy song by song and multitude of sins (at 14) but theres no mention.

  • Ah ok, been a long time since I've read the books. Maybe it was for Dagenham Dave, didn't he die in around 76/77? Knowing Burnel it was probably for some obscure Japanese ju-jitsu master haha!

  • No 15 yrs before that.

  • What are black armbands about?

  • Not sure really, they may mention it in one of the books. I know Hans Warmling died quite young, maybe he'd just pegged it.

  • @SteveResin I THINK THE ARM BANDS ARE SOMETHING TO DO WITH LEAVING THEIR RECORD COMPANY, THE B SIDE TO THIS SINGLE WAS ABOUT THE EMI COMPANY, 'FOOLS RUSH OUT'

  • @scottinblack ah thanks for the info, that sounds about right

  • What a wonderful song !

  • YEAH SEE THESE 3 TIMES !!BRILL!!!

  • JJ's bass is amazing

  • @btnikk ,agreed, jj is amazing, coupled with jet is an unbeatable rhythm section, arguably one of the tightest soulful rs ever...excluding 60s detroit

  • It's so hilarious when Jet gets up from the drums and starts singing with the lipsynch. Never seen that kinda skewering of a classic TV technique.

  • Still a great song even after 30 year

  • greenfield seems understandably very happy with this one,

to me this is a favourite candidate for the title "best pop song ever",--and greenfield plays his fingers red hot on it.

--- the video is hilarious, too!

  • classic, time for a pogo,

  • Its a long time now and I forget why, but wre the black arm bands because Sid had just died?

  • Class - 100% absolute pure class

  • 1:33 - Jet just gets plain bored of playing.

  • the stranglers with hugh cornwall top band done some great stuff, but never a punk group

  • They were Punk initially before they signed to United Artists. In 1976 they were an awsome live band and very outrageous and very violent with a solid fan base of Hell's Angels and the notorious Finchley Boys. It's widely known that footage of Stranglers gigs were used in the Sex Piostols Rock and Roll Swindle movie as Sex Pistols gigs were tame by comparison. There initial live set is as Punk as one could hope for but sadly they were soon to jump on the NEW WAVE bandwagon and become commercial.

  • Stranglers commercial??? Your having a laugh aren't you? Probably the least commercial out of all the bands from that era. How can albums like The MeninBlack be classed as commercial? Thats why The Stranglers wore black so they couldn't be put in a bracket. Get your facts right before spouting crap

  • Addendum: The point I am trying to make is that they really were at the forfront of Punk but some people try to make out that they were jumping on the bandwagon as Punks but they actually sold out to commercialism later and that they were a grass roots Punk band before signing. I am saying this an avid and obbsessed fan who also knows the true history which is fact.

  • so fucking what?

  • Check out Dave's black n yellow EDP Wasp Synth, I believe this was the only time one made it to the TOTP studio, RESPECT Mr Greenfield!

  • jet back and jj.........respect hahahaha

  • sheer class

  • ss you tube

  • Classic stuff.

  • 1:49 Hilarious how Jet appears out of nowhere to sing backup while he's supposed to mime along to the song.

  • I love the way they always took the piss on Top of the Pops, Go Buddy go is another classic with Huge strumming the bass lol.

  • They got banned from performing this song on TOTP a week or so later as Sir Cliff Richard objected to the video that was set in a Church, with the band dressed up as quior boys. He was number 1 and got his way. This footage is seriously good. TFP.

  • cliff richard ..............toss pot

  • Cliff Richard- what a puss!

  • Ýeah ofcourse, your kickin'in an open door here,-crapple- but you'll be surprised how many of your heroes grew up with his music ,when he was still rocking. Richard & the Shadows, made some ass kicking rock'n'roll till '63.I won't be surprised if even Hugh Cornwell grew up listening to 'MOVE IT'

  • Elvis refused to meet cliff richards - he saw him for what he was - a charlatan

  • Elvis wouldn't want to refuse anybody -clever-,he was politeness himself.

It probably was that 'colonel' Parker ass,who dictated Elvis'each and every move, and saw Richard probably as a threat, because the chap was pretty hot then.Look...in retrospect I too say ,he was a wee wee.but you've got to see & listen to it ,in the time it was made. It's easy to judge with hindsight. At the time I thought he was a sensation,he gave the then stale U.K. skiffle music scene,a kick up the ass.

  • another top song

  • I love the way the drummer just leaves the drums.

  • Great: Sebastien Tellier a du s'inspirer du look de Dave!

Pour les brassards noirs aucune idée!

    GODBLESS THE MENINBLACK!

  • and the rodneys are queing up|! GODBLESS THE MENINBLACK|||||||!!!

  • Brilliant!!

  • Nice one!!! Anyone know why JJ and Hugh are wearing black armbands?
