What a shame. Prefered him in Rigoletto. Shouldn't sing just about anything for the sake of singing...The voice is baseless and lost all its timbre and beauty.
I'm wrong. I listened to some other clips of Magomayev on his website, and his voice is astonishingly flexible. His Gremin is clearly a true bass baritone, yet his Non piu andrai is a high baritone - as his delivery in Le veau d'or (and he does an amazing female impression on Largo al factotum). What an astonishing voice.
great singer! but i don't like russian opera. Go azerbaijan :)

Odd to hear a high baritone singing a typically bass-baritone aria - Yul Brynner as Mephistopheles ? Great fun, though.

Magomayev may have been marketed as a bass-baritone, but he isn't.
