@The2010SnowDay Because she would do her hobo number before and then seamlessly go into Over the Rainbow which was always the last song of the show. Over the Rainbow serves as a metaphor for anyone with a hard life, and so fittingly she performed it while in her hobo costume.
My grandpa had the wonderful pleasure seeing her live, and said that she took this song VERY seriously and really did her best to add to the emotion of the song.
She usually sat at the end of the stage for the song. As far as I know, the Carnegie Hall concert was never filmed. What a shame... I wish I could have been there!
I loved this! A TV movie based on her life was made and this song sung this way was used - it was heart wrenching! Unbelievable! Did she perform it this way at Carnegie when she got the standing ovation and the audience just went crazy? I think I heard or read that somewhere.
How can I get a copy of it? Thanks so much for posting. I wonder also whether the Carnegie concert was taped.
Brilliant. Absolutely, positively brilliant. She not only could sing a song but could slip so effortlessly into the character singing it that it takes one's breath away. The only performer who comes remotely close to singing and acting a song is Liza Minnelli. Thank you so much for posting this!
she sang this on The Judy Garland show a few times in 1963 too so it's not the only recording. Was this special shot live? If it was then it might be the only live version on a tv show. She sat down and wore that outfit in her Palace concert in 1950 and also cried. This gets me everytime
Looking into this it appears that this the only recording of 'Over the rainbow' as Garland performed it in over 100 stage shows - in that outfit. It is however not the only television recording of the song.
Thank you for your coments - and correct me if i'm wrong.
Først: TAK! Fordi du har oploaded de her klip! You've made my day :) Men jeg tænkte på, er du sikker på at det er Liza der kommenterer den?

The ending of this hurts to watch. Why she had to suffer so in this life is unexplainable.

@opelske I believe she sat on the edge of the stage at Carnegie Hall as she did here but did not perform it in the Tramp costume as you see here.

@MikeSings82 Thanks for the info. I just listened to Judy again. Amazing voice! Love her. She's singing with the Angels now.

So true. Amazing talent! And sorely missed today - no one sings quite from the depths of their soul like Judy can.
