I've heard Faust in Wiener Staatsoper with Jonas Kaufmann and Inva Mula in feb.2012.The performanse was great! But here I can listen ugly woman, badly singing. Shame on the Met!
They could not find a good soprano to be a Jonas's partner? It's very pity to Kaufmann. I love
How is this possible to promote her as a first rate soprano in the big opera houses???? No voice, no thrill, no briliance. She must have a hell of a manager, it is not her voice, her qualities as a singer, or her beauty, but some other misterious quality... Gosh on all Earth, with 7 bilion inhabitants, they couldn't find another decent soprano!!! Horrific!!! Sorry fans! :(
I heard this in the 1990's at the Met with Ramey, Sewnson and I think Leech. Wow. What a performance. And the audicence could tell Sam was having such a good time in his red devil suit and that made it even better. And Swenson was SO much better that poppy!
Saw it live at the Met...The men were fantastic...This soprano is a disgrace!!!!! She cracked on every note above f. It doesn't sound quite as bad on the video, but still pretty bad. However I'm so glad that I sat so far in the back...She looks diabolical actually hideous...what an ugly person...Is it really so hard to find a lyric soprano. I thought it's so much harder to find a great bass and tenor....
I love the singers but hate the dreary production and terrible direction. Still as long as the opera world continues to suffer from lack of rehearsal time and idiotic ideas from incompetent directors who would not know acting if it hit them in the face. This will have to do.
I was in House last eve. Kaufmann and Pape both wonderful, courageous interpreters.. Popsi's voice is lovely in middle range but too small for the Met in my opinion which is why she disappoints in this trio which should be thrilling. Had same disappointment last year at Don Carlo (methinks the celestial voice, not Elisabetta) but the Korean tenor was even a lighterweight...
Love Kaufmann and Pape; she, however, is not up to the task vocally. And from the looks of it, another reason why some opera productions should not be modernized. But it's hard not to love the music from this classic.
I was very happy with the real performance and having this excerpt makes me happy, too. Jonas is more beautiful than Marina, and her singing may be thin and her accent horrible. But she is a terrific actress; I had tears in my eyes in the end - in Don Carlos, too, she made me cry.
Singing is wonderful. But a French tutor should put Kaufmann's "e aigu" out of its eeeeee misery. Jonas, all those accented e are pronounced "ay." You had Lausanne squirming!. As for Marina's French, well, zut.
Pape was impeccable, diabolic and I agree with the reviewer below who posit he IS the devil posing as an opera singer! I suspect his French wife helps him to perfection.
@FrisbeeX Maybe in Lausanne you pronounce the "é" like "ay", in Paris, and more generally in France, we do not. Pape's french is good but not better than Kaufmann's, even if his wife is french ; he was diabolic, well singing and very funny but not impeccable, sometimes he said anything but the text, for instance "vous vous ferez entrer (instead of tuer) en montant à l'assaut" or "blahblahblah" instead of "cette vieille impitoyable, de force ou de gré je crois..."
I saw this in HD on Saturday. Rene Pape is really the Devil pretending to be an opera singer playing the part of the Devil. CF, thanx for the posting.
Thank you so much for this marvelous scene and singing. It is like heaven, I suppose. What great joy YouTube has brought me! Danke, merci, grazie, etc.
Kaufmann is wonderful, i admire him very much. Poplavskaya ...hmm... i can´t get warm with her, i saw her several times and i wonder about her big career. Like in this performance she often fights with the top and the stamina. Her singing in this trio wasn´t a pleasure.

This is awful. Shame on "The Met." Ugly production, uninspired and crass. "Faust" deserves much better. And so does OPERA itself.

Marina Poplavskaya is not so bad as you say.
Her french diction has got better, her acting is quite well.

I don't like his voice in the Italian and French rep... His voice is beautiful in German. Very very strange sound and language here.

An even voice trout the career is very, very rare... Some get darker, some harmonics, some wickeness: is an emotional-physical phenomena
