classic song; i have clear memories of singing this loudly all day long in work--much to the annoyance of garage foreman who hated me (and my jim kerr hairstyle) hahahaha. to irritate him further, i used to write letters backwards when filling out jobcards and customers car service books(as per empires and dance album sleeve.
can listen to this song and the american 12" vinyl all day long........
This was Simple Minds at their best! Their early albums up to New Gold Dream were brilliant. They'll play live here in Rio this month and I hope they'll include some of these great early songs.
I wish somebody would post Twist/Run/Repulsion on here...that is possibly the weirdest "song" I've ever heard, but it works in a way that only the early Simple Minds could make it work!
I also think that Thirty Frames A Second goes really well with Kant Kino...if you listen carefully you can hear they fade into each other. The two tracks make a good contrast with each other: TFAS = loud and rackety, with KK = gentle, quiet and floaty.
I love the early and..a..fair..bit..of..the..post..'NGD'..stuff and while you raise a few good points, i don't like the patronising whiff of musical elitisim that's evident here. You speak of the 'mainstream' as though your were higher beings looking down at the slum dwellers! Get over yourselves!
Strangely enough this sounds like it could've been a lost INXS track from their "Swing" album. Only thing is, this song came out a few years before INXS' breakout album. See, the Minds were ahead of their time.
Yes Simple Minds 'where' kraut rockers at heart. Then they pretended that part of their career never happened and went for the American market. People remember Echo & The Bunnymen more its a self inflicted travesty really.
@jonsilence Meh, I wouldn't really call it a "descent", just a natural progression. Artists change and evolve, their music usually becomes more toned down and contemporary as they grow older. Fleetwood Mac was a hard rock band in the 60's, look where they wound up. The Fixx was a pretty edgy band in 1982, in 2002...not so much.
@jonsilence I'd argue that Sparkle in the Rain was the last great album. The production was huge, but the songwriting was strong, so the whole thing worked. "Once upon a time" is where they really went in the wrong direction. Even bigger production, but the songs were not as strong. "Street Fighting Years" had good songwriting, but production was out of control for an otherwise fairly mellow affair. However, "Real life" was where I truly lost interest, as the album was just awful.
@ConfusingClarity I agree with nearly everything you said there, SITR was poor imo, three great singles but the rest of it was just bland, OUAT was what it was, pure stadium rock and for that it was ok just not my thing. Empires and Dance was the last great album for me, the following albums were all very good up to and including New Gold Dream, but 30 years on and this song still blows me away.
@ConfusingClarity I agree but then again i think black and white is their best album in 26 years.. It is stronger then once upon a time.. But still cant beat their first 6 albums
This song is so, so cold, remorseless..it has no soul....cold, robotic...and yet hypnotic...what a conundrum..that was the genius of early Minds..up untill New Goldream..after which Kerr and Co lost it
Hiya...nice video. One small thing though...this video is not just "Thirty Frames A Second" is it? The last bit where the birds are flying is the track called "Kant Kino"...was this intentional or an oversight?
Anyway, that said, I think you have one of the best Simple Minds collections on YouTube!
Yes i know kant kino is on the end this is the way i downloaded on to my pc and i like it and it was to short to put up on its own so i left it on the end and thank you for your comment and feedback.
The soul of Simple Minds....and Burchill and Kerr lost it...Silly sods...What a shame they couldn't keep to the New Gold Dream standard. (Which was where they were heading with this song.)
this track is hip cool banging great bass synth reckon this would still thrill da yoof got to be up there with joy div stuff .they should have stayed weird. the power of the dollar.
Have all their stuff up to New Gold Dream. Everytime I listen to the old stuff, just can't believe this is the same band that produced such commerical crap like Don't You Forget About me ("la..lalalala...lalalalala..")

This is the music I have in my recurring dream/nightmare where I lose my identity and have to prove over again who I am! Love it!!
Say who you are...
Kant-Kino stuck on the end for good measure...

I`m impressed with a lot of great early SM stuff on uTube. Always been my favourite band but only because of their early years, ie. 30 years ago.
MerseysideAlice 2 years ago
This was SM at their best
Unique sound rather than the stadium/political/ Americanised whores they turned out to be.
They should go back 30 years never mind 30 frames a second.

this track is 'ROCK HARD!!' 1 of my fav sm songs.
docbreaknik 2 years ago
The Simple Minds went backwards 30 frames a second after Derek Forbes left the band.
shavedeyeball 2 years ago 3
How true!
But they were already changing after Brian McGee had gone.
New Gold Dream and Sparkle In The Rain are brilliant though, I love them.
Still I prefer Brian the New Wave drummer to Mel the stadium rock drummer.
Sadly, Simple Minds collapsed when Derek left and morphed into a bland, pompous, americanised combo with a message.
"Mandela Day"? Give me "Boys From Brazil" anytime.

You said it. A beautiful butterfly turned into a ugly fat caterpillar singing hallelujah.
shavedeyeball 2 years ago
@AndrewAnthonyHyde Right on, dude! "Don't you forget about me" was the beginning of the end, as far as I'm concerned.
love the "holy backbeat" that Brian and Derek formed, and the later stuff was ok, but didn't have near the same spirit as early Simple Minds did.
I finally got around to looking for SM on YT, and it's like a trip down '80's memory lane.

Agreed, NGD was the last real- and great-Simple Minds album. Everything after was a descent into the mainstream.
