@Alexeiyagdonovich: As with the Borges allegory that Baudrillard uses in 'Simulacra and Simulations', today, it is no longer the abstraction of the map that is rotting away, but it is instead the real, since all effort is directed towards the abstraction, and none to the real itself, which simply begins to crumble and wither. To the 'untrained' eye, so to say, the real and the hyperreal appear identical since the hyperreal will present itself as the only valid and legitimate order.
hi ! can you explain or discuss how jean baudrillard's theory of simulacra and simulation be applied to social networking sites? such as facebook and second life... tnx much :)
@kCramnie: Sure! Though, I have to say, Baudrillard died before the whole social networking hype took root, so I can really only guess what Baudrillard would have had thought about it. But I'm sure that the simulacrative logic can be applied to social networking sites, since in the end, these networks are pure abstractions, made up of signs can cancerously multiply since there is no longer any material limits to their production. I'll try to adress this in my next response to Alex.
@NegaSado i think social networking sites exemplifies baudrillard's hyperreal in the sense that images or identities that are projected in these sites are becoming more dominant than the reality it tries to represent.. basically, simulations can never be divorced from social networking sites because simulations are an inherent feature of these sites. the only problem in this regard is that, simulations are now becoming more dominant than the reality it tries to present..
hej...
