I think it's a sublime moment that Dave Letterman had these guys on to play this song on the night that he apologized to Bill Hicks Mother. I think it is a great gesture and shows the emotion and impact that we have on each other. God Bless.
This reminds me of louder, faster Springsteen... Such classically-oriented music... It's good to see a band that not only acknowledges their roots, but can market that older style to the new breed... One of the truly outstanding acts on the circuit...
What makes me the happiest is that Letterman is genuinely impressed with the band. There's so many acts he won't even get up from his desk for, but here he is shaking their hands. You gotta love that. I love indie music, but screw it. The Gaslight Anthem are proof that rock isn't dead.
This is a beautiful performance. The hugs they give eachother at the end are the best. they seem to be playing music for all the right reasons and put a lot of spirit into what they do.
i love how letterman was so surprised at how great they are. he seemed so honest when he applauded them, im sure he bought the albums afterwards too hahah
people have no reason to whine. they're making money. they're making phenomenal music. i saw them back in september and Benny brought me water because i was camping out. got a chance to see them after the show, all really chill, down to earth guys who truly just love music. so stop complaining and enjoy them!
it's stupid to criticize them just because they are succesful, you have to be happy that we have bands that make both good and succesful music nowadays( not only lady gagas and bierbers). These guys are something different, they are already part of the US music history. How stupid do u have to be to say that all succesful rock band are a sellout, you dont criticize the beatles, the stones or the boss for being popular.
Seriously one of the best live bands ever. I may add that they are all incredibly nice dudes. It's good to see a hard working blue collar type band get so much well deserved attention.
I wonder why everybody but the drummer are wearing long sleeves, was it because it's cold or is it because for one reason or another the tattoos had to be hidden?
@harshgoat fuck radiohead?? i feel sorry for you bro, there's no need to put down one of the greatest bands on the planet because you like gaslight anthem. both are great bands, this is music not the NBA
@harshgoat I laughed so hard when i read your comment. I know this douche bag thats obsessed with both radiohead and kings of leon and i told him the same thing.
There are two bands that have taken my music collection by storm and will never leave it....Lucero, the southern punk awesome, and Gaslight....my dream show would be to see both of them playing the same stage. A great band with hopefully a lot more music left to play.
Its pretty interesting to see how there guitars have developed with them, I mean brian was on the fender tele for ferevea, and then used the les pual jr (or melody maker still not sure) and now he uses a 56 goldtop les pual lol the tone is way different now from the fender to the voxs. but still same old good.
it's a les paul jr. it has a p-90 pickup...the melody maker has a single coil. you're very right though, i t hink the main thing is that the les paul jr. has p-90's and so does his gold top. also in his black tele he had he had single coils, but they are custom made to sound like p-90's. brian fallon builds his amps too...well at least his bassman and the vox combo...he changed the speakers and the transistors and all that jazz. his guitar always sounds amazing thouhg!
well fair enough, but i do think it'd really suck if they got like, huge. i mean, kings of leon for example are a great band, but suddenly everyone likes them.
What's wrong with being huge? The Beatles were huge. Springsteen was and still is huge. Why is it that people want bands they like to be unsuccessful?
I think its just with bands that have , and I use this term very loosely, a punk vibe some people feel they should stay small and independent. I think people should focus on how they get there rather than the fact they got there. I mean if a band pays their dues then who are we to argue. I think the Offspring are a prime example of how a band get shit for being on a major but with Smash they had the biggest selling independent album of all time and they end up with chart success. Dues Paid!!!
they totally have...brian fallon is 29 years old! they've been in music for a while, maybe not the actual gaslight anthem but still, and the music is great who cares. i think playing on david letterman is a great way to show people what you've got. there should be more people in the world who like this and not metal or other shit. the gaslight anthem deserves to be where they are 100%
well let's be honest...most bands that start out small and sincere lose their sincerity and compromise their sound once they go big.
There are quite a few exceptions, but for the most part i think it's reasonable for people to worry about their favourite bands going big...we've all seen what happens.
Because people feel entitled to their music and act like spoiled brats screaming "mine mine!". It's pathetic really. Better yet, all the morons complaining that Gaslight or whoever are too big should pick up an instrument instead of bitching and go play some venues and see if you want to actually make some money and get your music out.. Or if you want to stay at smaller shit venues.
Get over yourselves people. Good for gaslight. They're making money and even Springsteen likes them!!!!
It's nice that their doing well and their success is well deserved, but don't call smaller venues shit, they're the breeding ground for these kind of bands.
@rloebe34 People should not necessarily feel entitled to make money off of music. That is a relatively new concept in terms of how long music has been around. If people don't want to pay, then there has to be more incentive. I buy records because I like having the complete package - but I don't chastize people for being fine with pirating it - you can't force them without an incentive.
That's untrue, historically musicians and artists in general sought patronage from nobles and the rich, you couldn't succeed or even survive without it. You can't make it unless somebody buys your shit.
Technically you can make music without people buying it, unless you meant "make it" as in get big and have loads of people listening to your music, in that aspect you are certainly correct.
@rloebe34 shit venues are not bad i think we have all been there when we have seen a band at a shit venue many times then the get big. it dont feel the same they seem to get an ego about them and its just never the same . im sure you know what im talking about.
@imcrouse I find it's the fans who tend to become pretentious, egotistical assholes not the bands themselves. It's like they feel their back pocket band has abondoned them. That or if some 12 year old girl who likes Twighlight starts listening to them then the "original fan" suddenly feels it's not cool to like said band anymore. So yeah more often than not it's the fans who become egotistical and prententious. They resent the fact "their band" doesn't belong to just them anymore.
@rloebe34 i agree! but the dissapointing part is that they are hardly making any money still. Brian stated in an interview that he has enough money to survive in a small apartment and buy some new guitars and equipment that they need. other than that, they are just as poor as me.
@EssoSteve Well as Henry Rollins once said, it's tough but at least you're not flipping burgers or scrubbing toilets. And that's gotta count for something.
I know. It's kinda good though. If they were extremely popular, then most of their fans would be 12 year old girls, and that would be horrible. I can't go to a concert full of 12 year old girls. I'll feel like a pedophile.
The name of the song is 'The '59 Sound'. The name of the album is 'The '59 Sound' The apostrophe is in front of the number indicating that it is a year.

Alex is always having St.Pauli Merchandise around his equipment. In Hamburg he had a big scarf hangin' over his Amp. It's always exciting to see how famous FC St.Pauli is.
Saw em in Dallas. These guys' have got it for sure.
Dave really seemed to like it too! You can tell with some bands, he's just being polite and smiling at the end of the show and didn't actually like the music, but with Gaslight, he was all over it.
I saw them last Wednesday in Albuquerque! U have to see them live! It's an experience that can't b described! I asked Brain if he'd adopt me! I'm eagerly anticipating their return, they said they're coming back in September! I'M SO EXCITED!
I think it's a sublime moment that Dave Letterman had these guys on to play this song on the night that he apologized to Bill Hicks Mother. I think it is a great gesture and shows the emotion and impact that we have on each other. God Bless.

Anybody realize that this song is about death? It's really deep. Also, they have alot of Bruce Springsteen references in alot of their songs!

"What are you the drummer? Good."
This is an amazing performance. They really need to come to Boston. I feel like none of their recent tours have included us and I'm dying to see them

I saw that he did a solo appearance which is cool, but I'm really itching to see the energy of the full band

I just got a Gaslight shirt, the one with the Parkway on it not only because I love the band, but it's got NJ on it.
