Actually not to get technical because I guess companies call stuff all sorts of different things but it's tappets an followers and locks. They do no lifting of the follower at all. All they do is have the follower rest of them and the cam pushs the other end down on the valve stem. I'm only saying this because I just ordered all new ones of all these and that is what you'll have to look up to find them
The 4.6 do not have lifters in the first place. The only thing they have is the valve lashes, the followers and then your valve assembly. My engine started doing a sewing machine sounding noise after I cammed it but that's normal for a large cam for the valvetrain to get noisy.
If you use anything other then 5w20 in the 4.6 you WILL fuck the motor. There are no exceptions it don't matter if there's 330 k miles on the engine you HAVE to use 5w20 cause there's little oil passages and that that the oil HAS to get into and if you use anything other then 5w20 it won't get in the places it needs to get and if fucks the engine NEVER NEVER use anything but 5w20 in a 4.6 or 5.4.
So what's your mystery oil? I was thinking of trying sea foam for my car, because it seems like the ticking is louder in the winter than summer. What oil viscosity do you use?
I changed my oil last weekend and put mystery oil in it and it hasn't done it since... It was probly stuck lifter and the mystery oil got it unstuck. Mine has stalled before too but it's because my air filter is so dirty I don't think it can be cleaned ha but the problem is in the top of the motor so it's not a terrible problem
My 97 stang has a tick similar to this one, i swapped the engine with one from a 2003 crown vic interceptor, unfortunately when i bought it, the guy didnt tell me the timing accessories were messed up, i had it fixed, but it still had the tick after, and one night, it actually stalled and turned off on me, I havent driven it in over a year now, let me know if you find anything out about this, good luck man!

@t0t4lbl4ck0ut there is lash adjusters/hydrolic lifters, rocker arms, valvesprings, retainers, and keepers in the valetrain.

I ended up throwing a rod through the block, more than likely it's a spun rod bearing so I'd check that asap!
