@gottohavesoul It's on the Living Legend album, but not the same version. This version is on "Unreleased Ar Vol V: The Art History Album from Widow's Taste. Check it out at cdbaby dot com. You can download it for 99 cents. Also, a better version of this clip on youtube, check out straightlife's videos.
Considering what a decent guy Art was, and that all he used drugs for was to highlight his emotions when playing. To escape from life outside jazz - an abrasive life for a musician. The way he was treated was a travesty of human understanding. The morons who handled his case were repulsive, jealous idiots.
go to CD baby and search for The Art History project. This tune, Lost Life, is on disc three of the set. You can download just this tune -- nicely remastered.
I like the stuff you've done so far. There are two movies that have made the rounds recently, Jackie Paris and Anita O'Day. Maybe you could approach some of the people involved with these films, so you can finish your project more quickly. You seem to have everything in place, you just need someone to put it all together. Good luck either way!
It's unfortunate that the entertainment industry, music in particular, is awash in drugs. Who knows what a lot of these musicians might have come up with if they hadn't died young?
very good stuff. Loving this introduction to Pepper's music. His phrasing is incredible. SOme of it brings to mind Wayne Shorter - an Art Pepper devotee?
Hey Laurie - I'm doing something really similar and we have a lot of similarities. I'm in my 50s working on an animated film about the story of a writer told by his muse. Will be posting on YouTube soon. Love your piece. Wonderful and thank you for the encouragement!
In his book pepper writes of a cutting session with Sonny Stitt. Art was in big life trouble on a number of fronts: women, tax, drugs, career. Sonny played a load of choruses, using retrograde, tossing in quotes, the full monty, and Art had to follow this.... he blew Stitt away, he was so strung out. Sonny looks at him after he's played 24 choruses, and says "Alright, man".
Many many years ago hitching accros the states I stopped of in New Orleans, there was a jazz radio station that played out from the university campus, and one day i stopped in to chat to the dj, by chance he was playing Las Cuevas de Mario. I've been hooked ever since. A beautiful combination of sound and images (more presence to the music at the the begining perhaps) I can't wait for the finnished programme. many thanks.
My first jazz LP was 'The Artistry of Pepper." My mom bought it for me 43 years ago. It inspired me and I became a jazz sax player and educator. I'm still moved when I hear Art's playing; it speaks to me on a deep spirtual level. I heard Art play at Pt. Firmen park in the 70's and will never forget it. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was sublime. I met Laurie that day too. She was taking pictures for a book she was writing, "Straight Life." Thank you for sharing this clip.
Spectacular! You're creating a new kind of documentary. I've been a fan of Art's for almost 30 years, since I was in high school. Can't wait to see the whole film. Best of luck.
Wonderful video. Thank you for your informative and extremely compelling piece of video art.
One thing: he might have been a free man by being an informant, but also more than likely a dead man soon thereafter. I think he didn't really have a choice. But it was interesting to know that about his sentencing.
It is so strange to listen to my favorite jazz musician. i really do like this video!!! Please bring us more!!! I have all his records but this was a good bonus! Long live Art in our hearts!!!
Mixing the real with the photos and the animation to show his thoughts and his story and his feelings like that. That was so good, (sorry I'm gushing and its not like me). I poarticuallarly like thed soundtrack. The way it phases in and out and the background noise...It all comes together so well. I'm lost for words... I need to think about what I just saw.
"Lost Life" is on his record from '75 -- Living Legend.

That was really interesting, I hadn't realised how much time he'd spent behind bars. Well done.

Superlative music, Art was a true champ!
But what is the name of the song that plays
throughout this clip? Is it on any of his albums, or was this just a performance piece?
Does anyone out there know?!

This is a previously unreleased version of Art's tune, Lost Life. Eventually it'll be released on the Unreleased Art series on Widow's Taste Records.

painfully beautiful, just like his music.
thank you!

This is the way to create a jazz portrait. We are fortunate that Art was such a talker -- few players are -- and word painter to boot.

Is Art Pepper related to Jim Pepper - the phenomenal native american tenor who passed away in the early 80s?

I think I'll skip watching the film. However, the agonising music of Art will continue to tear out our hearts for a long time to come.
