In case anyone is still watching this thread, according to the latest news, Piranha are developing the game, now called Mechwarrior Online as a free-to-play online game. For more details go to either the pcgamer or mwomercs websites. Apparently its due for release around the middle of 2012.
He also adds a clarification that the report from a couple of years ago of a legal conflict with Harmony Gold is not a factor in all this: "Just a small update. Harmony Gold has nothing to do with any delays. There is no legal battle." Thanks Hump.
A tweet by Bryan Ekman of Piranha Games clarifies we should not expect news about their plans for MechWarrior 5 at E3, saying: "To all our #MechWarrior5 fans, no public news at #E3Expo this year. You guys are troopers for sticking with us. It will be worth the wait!" --
I'm 18 now and played Mechwarrior 3 when I was 5, never understood anything beyond rocket spam, found my old joystick, hard drive and mechwarrior copy, copy the data across and now discover there's a reboot of the series called reboot. I can't wait but I just hope this doesn't turn into one of the games where it is tossed aside for call of duty and within months there are less than 100 people playing online.
It's such a shame that there hasn't been an update about this game. Considering the problems Smith and Tinker have had with the court case regarding some of the Mech designs, it's know wonder they have been quite. Hopefully we will get some news soon and maybe (and this is a big maybe) a possiblr release date.

I know Smith and Tinker had a big layoff a while ago. There hasn't been any new news on MW since then :-[
