A few Trek fan-atics are still in denial about this film. Need to break it to them gently: it SUCKED! and I mean BIG TIME! From the dreadful grinding quality of the music score, to the leaden acting and the pointless story. This bloated motion picture version of the old ST tv episode "The Changeling" almost killed the rebirth of Trek when it came out.
FYI, on the DVD release of Star Trek TMP, the trailer was restored and given a 5.1 remix from the original 6 track dolby stereo format. They kept the blue band (precursor to the Green Band) before the trailer. What films were shown with this trailer? I would guess maybe Alien, Moonraker, and any sci-fi film that was in Dolby Stereo. Star Trek TMP was the first Star Trek with stereo elements.
Star Trek-The Motion Picture should have started with the Huge Energy Cloud Attacking and Destroying the Klingon War Ships that the Starship that the Newly Promoted "Admiral " Kirk is on with Mr. Sulu and Mr. Chekov. What a Scene with Kirk Getting into the Command Chair after it's Captain is Injured. Kirk shows he still has the Right Stuff & his inner doubts about being in Command dissapear as we see him give the Orders thru Fire & Flame and Save the Day. Now we know he still can Command ....
This is the best star trek film ever made underneath the wrath of khan. It's a classical science fiction movie, has an interesting story, great special effects, and most importantly, it isn't action schlock. Some people think science fiction is about spaceships exploding and cute robots, that's science fantasy.
If TMP proves one thing, it's that bigger is not always better.
Pauline Kael claimed that TMP was probably the most expensive movie made up until that time (1979) ... and, I have to say, that the movie *looks* expensive. It has a grand, epic feel.
(It's flawed, but still underrated.)
TMP is to TWOK as a lavish banquet is to a home-cooked meal ... most people honestly would prefer the latter.
TWOK succeeds precisely because it feels *homey* - not "cheap," per se, but much more down-to-Earth.
on the star trek tmp special edition dvd, this trailer was shown in 5.1 dolby digital. Was the audio remixed for the dvd or was it straight from an old source?
I think this trailer is awesome. I use my imigination and pretend it's a trailer for my story GALACTIC BULLET about a steam train that soars across the galaxy and the other galaxies beyond via laser rails.
Oh man, I worked in a movie theater during the late 70's ( high school years) and this was one of our big Christmas movies. There was a huge display that took up most of one wall in our lobby. That Christmas we played Star Trek, 1941, and The Jerk. Funny that I can still remember that. Ah....my youth.
Man. Now, I'm not a fan of star trek, but this film is incredibly profound and well-made. Definately one of my favorite movies ever. V'ger would kick the death stars ass any day.
Simple? You call that simple? The warp drive effect, the worm hole, Vger's shields, The lightning probe, The weapons fire, transporter beams, disintegration and Vger turning into energy was all done by hand frame by frame. It was not simple.
This wasn't a great Star Trek film, no. IT was mediocre at best. However, it was a very good film for Spock. Te script hat too man re-writes during production, and it lost that playfulness that original series has. However, a few good things came from it, like Spock's character development, and that wonderful theme song.
1000% Agreed... Abrams made a nice effort but his Star Trek film(s) have too much Star Wars/Matrix action/effects and not enough of the human story with morality, character, and the idea that humanity has "grown up" into a wise and morally developed intelligent species. That concept alone made the "true and original" Star Trek made by Gene Roddenberry so special and memorable! It was his vision of what we as humans would become! That trait seems to be lost in the current Abrams film(s). IMHO
par contre pour ce trailer ils n'ont pas eu le temps de retravailler les images, et entre 1,15 et 1,20 à peu près, on voit le bras mécanique tenir la maquette du vaisseau, ça fais une tache noire à gauche lol
I never tire of hearing the legendary Orson Welles narrarating and introducing my heroes. His voice really befits the true epic-movie scale and quality The Motion Picture strived for, even if many would say the film ultimately didn't achieve that. But TMP was the only Trek film (including "Khan") that sought that epic scope. While still great, the rest were made more like oversized TV movies. I like TMP more today than when I saw it opening day 30 years ago -- the Blu-Ray version is gorgeous.
Star Trek The Motion Picture was a really well made film. I enjoyed every minute of it. I remember going to see it again in 1983 when it returned to theaters three and a half years after it's initial release and the room was packed. The audience was reaction was just as excited as if it was a new release and this was a year after the release of Star Trek II.
Decker was originally going to be in the proposed Star Trek series that never got off the ground because they greenlit the movie. A lot of his character was later morphed into Riker on TNG.
the trailer says it all, way tooo solemn and self congrulating, its 2001 meets star trek, as an sci fi art house, its lovely as a continuation of the series its way off
GTFOH! That's IT?! The greatest threat the Federation has EVER faced, even to date? More dangerous than the Klingons, the Dominion, and the Borg COMBINED? - and THIS is the best trailer they could come up with?

Sure maybe it was a bit artistically stale, but there would have never been a ST2 with TMP. It was a baby step, but a step in the right direction nonetheless.
I have to agree with thanks51 .... the score alone was tremendous. The plot and even some of the SPFX were not the best, but given all of the behind the scenes issues with the studio, I thought it was a worthy effort.

Wow, so the trailer sucked too! Thank god KHAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNN came along as quick as he did after this stinker! I like the premise of this whole thing... Here's the actors and heres some cheesy flashy lights LETS DO THIS FOR HOURS!!! YAY THIS WILL BE GREAT!
thats not true at all. I like Star Trek a lot, but that doesn't mean I like Wesley Crusher, Lt. Ilia(sp) or the 5th movie. This movie's ok, but Star Trek II definately improved on the pacing. A lot of it was slow moving models docking with each other(this scene, plus the Vulcan ship delivering Spock for example)I also don't like that the for the sake of saving money, the Excelsior model was turned into the Enterprise B, Reliant the Boseman, and refit Enterprise into Enterprise A
The thing about this movie is that it really wasn't a movie. It was a way for Paramount to show off the best special effects they had at their disposal at the time. It had a budget of about $35 million. Which, in 1978/79, was a LOT, the equivalent of $120 million today, when it comes to movies.
Its a decent movie. Its not the worst of the movies. It has something good things going for it, state of the art (for the time) special effects, a AMAZING music soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith and an epic story. However, its really slow and its not exactly the best when it comes to the script and such. There are much, MUCH better Star Trek movies to see like ST: II, III, IV, VI and Star Trek First Contact
This movie wasn't as good as other ST movies mainly The Rath of Kahn but I looking back I loved this film because of the way it was implemented with different camera angles, new special effects in the late seventies. It's like the old star trek but just more spectacular.
Well, in defense of ST:TMP, what could you expect for a film that was delivered wet to the premiere? In other words, the print used in the feature premiere was freshly struck and rushed.
The film was released before it was really done. Because of the time constraints, certain things that were promised were never delivered, such as a 70mm presentation.
"So beautiful" totallyAnnihailated writes. That was what they aimed for in this film. Rather than a shoot em up, they decided on a beautiful love story between Decker and the Ball headed woman. They wanted beautiful visuals and a love story to impress many women. (And the men were supposed to be impressed with the cast coming together and Kirks behavior.) They wanted women to leave in tears, "What a beautiful movie." Beautiful is the word, not action packed.
Yes I agree, I don't know why this is the least favorite Trek movie for so many fans. For me this is the most perfect expression of Gene Roddenberry's vision of Star Trek (along with the first season of TNG, the only season in which he had any degree of direct control). The visuals and overall design of the film, the pacing and story make this really the most beautiful Trek movie.
Yes the story focused on love, human bonds and coming together, saying that love is the most important thing. That makes it more adult than "Star Wars" But in time, the attitude towards this film might change for new audiences not expecting cowboys and indians in space.
What will not change is this movie's often self-righteous and high-handed attitude about a somewhat dull story and the fatal inability to discern real human emotion from feverish melodrama.
I though it was going THX at 1:40

No, it was writing and the editing that killed this movie.

So beautiful... it hurts my eyes.

Real human emotion is melodramatic!
