  • I though it was going THX at 1:40

  • A few Trek fan-atics are still in denial about this film. Need to break it to them gently: it SUCKED! and I mean BIG TIME! From the dreadful grinding quality of the music score, to the leaden acting and the pointless story. This bloated motion picture version of the old ST tv episode "The Changeling" almost killed the rebirth of Trek when it came out.

  • this movie's better than people say

  • Oh my......

  • And Orson Welles is broke...

  • I completely disagree with the last comment. I think this is a great movie. And a fantastic start to all of the star trek movies that followed.

  • This movie was shit man!!!

20 Freakin minutes in that tunnel getting to V-Ger seemed like HOURS!!!!

Then when you get to the end of the tunnel it's anticlimactic!!

Go watch the series instead or any other movie after this is good too.. This is the worst thing the Star Trek universe ever came up with...

  • FYI, on the DVD release of Star Trek TMP, the trailer was restored and given a 5.1 remix from the original 6 track dolby stereo format. They kept the blue band (precursor to the Green Band) before the trailer. What films were shown with this trailer? I would guess maybe Alien, Moonraker, and any sci-fi film that was in Dolby Stereo. Star Trek TMP was the first Star Trek with stereo elements.

  • Star Trek-The Motion Picture should have started with the Huge Energy Cloud Attacking and Destroying the Klingon War Ships that the Starship that the Newly Promoted "Admiral " Kirk is on with Mr. Sulu and Mr. Chekov. What a Scene with Kirk Getting into the Command Chair after it's Captain is Injured. Kirk shows he still has the Right Stuff & his inner doubts about being in Command dissapear as we see him give the Orders thru Fire & Flame and Save the Day. Now we know he still can Command ....

  • Star Trek: The Adventures of the Bald Chick, the REAL series starts at Khan.

  • A great gift to Trek fans who had waited years to see the franchise continue.

  • This is the best star trek film ever made underneath the wrath of khan. It's a classical science fiction movie, has an interesting story, great special effects, and most importantly, it isn't action schlock. Some people think science fiction is about spaceships exploding and cute robots, that's science fantasy.

  • thanks haven't seen this before

  • Guess we know where THX got the idea for their logo sound effect.

  • "Persis Khambatta... as Lieutenant Ilia... huhh I need a drink."

"Okay Orson, but please pronounce it like "Ay-lee-ahhh."

"Why? Wasn't that good? God, I'm sweating all over."

"No, please repeat it. So, in July peas grow there... ehh I mean this Christmas the human adventure is beginning."

"What? I can't read that! I would never direct an actor in Shakespeare like this!"

"Let's do it, okay? And put that cigar away."

"Alright... Anyways, this name sounds familiar. Robert Wise? Hmm..."

  • If TMP proves one thing, it's that bigger is not always better.

Pauline Kael claimed that TMP was probably the most expensive movie made up until that time (1979) ... and, I have to say, that the movie *looks* expensive. It has a grand, epic feel.

    (It's flawed, but still underrated.)

TMP is to TWOK as a lavish banquet is to a home-cooked meal ... most people honestly would prefer the latter.

TWOK succeeds precisely because it feels *homey* - not "cheap," per se, but much more down-to-Earth.

  • If only the film could've lived up to having Orson Welles do the v.o. for its trailer... "Star Trek: The Slow Motion Picture".

  • on the star trek tmp special edition dvd, this trailer was shown in 5.1 dolby digital. Was the audio remixed for the dvd or was it straight from an old source?

  • coming this christmas

  • I think this trailer is awesome. I use my imigination and pretend it's a trailer for my story GALACTIC BULLET about a steam train that soars across the galaxy and the other galaxies beyond via laser rails.

  • Hang on, Scotty was a full Commander in this film. Not a Lt.Commander.

  • @spectre0075 My God its full of stars.

  • 0:35

Why does McCoy look like he's leaving a boring conversation to start a mission of taking a shit?

  • very 70s feel

They don't make trailers like that anymore LOL

  • Everyone is so old in this movie

in the new one everyone is damn young

  • @Osmankhan786 yes but everything is so good in this old movie, in the new one everything is so bad ^^

  • Kirk took a temporary grade reduction to Captain to command the Enterprise. Similarly, Decker was "demoted" to Commander when Kirk assumed command.

  • Oh man, I worked in a movie theater during the late 70's ( high school years) and this was one of our big Christmas movies. There was a huge display that took up most of one wall in our lobby. That Christmas we played Star Trek, 1941, and The Jerk. Funny that I can still remember that. Ah....my youth.

  • The reason it doesn't give away any plot is because there is no plot.

  • Man. Now, I'm not a fan of star trek, but this film is incredibly profound and well-made. Definately one of my favorite movies ever. V'ger would kick the death stars ass any day.

  • Awesome Visual and sound effects!

    Awesome Cinematography!

And not a single major plot point given away!

One of the best trailers I have ever seen!!!

By the way, 1:31 - 1:42 sounds a bit like the THX logo.

  • Mann, I lOVE those 70s-80's special effects. Nothing like good ol siimple stuff.

  • Simple? You call that simple? The warp drive effect, the worm hole, Vger's shields, The lightning probe, The weapons fire, transporter beams, disintegration and Vger turning into energy was all done by hand frame by frame. It was not simple.

  • ok, 'more simplistic' looking stuff.

  • It's a shame that Orson Welles was never actually in "Star Trek". That would have made this massive fan of both wet his pants with pure joy!

  • Must see!!!!! I can't wait for xmas!

  • I can't wait until chistmas, I'm going to go see this!

  • is that Orson Wells doing the voice over?

  • I am pretty sure that it was ....

  • yup

  • @Frontenyon Yes it is Orson Wells. He did a lot of adds and voice overs in the 70's and early 80's.

  • Makes me wanna watch it again.

  • This is a great film. Not the best, but it has its place among the films.

  • Definitely, if you actually sit through, and watch it all, it is a most touching, thoughtful deep film. It really is about the Human Adventure.

  • This wasn't a great Star Trek film, no. IT was mediocre at best. However, it was a very good film for Spock. Te script hat too man re-writes during production, and it lost that playfulness that original series has. However, a few good things came from it, like Spock's character development, and that wonderful theme song.

  • god this was such a boring movie all it really was was screen shots of the enterprise and some LSD effects

  • this is Star Trek. Not that JJ Abrams bull...

  • 1000% Agreed... Abrams made a nice effort but his Star Trek film(s) have too much Star Wars/Matrix action/effects and not enough of the human story with morality, character, and the idea that humanity has "grown up" into a wise and morally developed intelligent species. That concept alone made the "true and original" Star Trek made by Gene Roddenberry so special and memorable! It was his vision of what we as humans would become! That trait seems to be lost in the current Abrams film(s). IMHO

  • @sgtmyers88 The Abrams film was horrible and not Start trek by any definition.

  • excellent film ^^

par contre pour ce trailer ils n'ont pas eu le temps de retravailler les images, et entre 1,15 et 1,20 à peu près, on voit le bras mécanique tenir la maquette du vaisseau, ça fais une tache noire à gauche lol

  • I never tire of hearing the legendary Orson Welles narrarating and introducing my heroes. His voice really befits the true epic-movie scale and quality The Motion Picture strived for, even if many would say the film ultimately didn't achieve that. But TMP was the only Trek film (including "Khan") that sought that epic scope. While still great, the rest were made more like oversized TV movies. I like TMP more today than when I saw it opening day 30 years ago -- the Blu-Ray version is gorgeous.

  • Im watching Star Trek II right now on Blu Ray.

Star Trek + Blu Ray = AWSOME!!

    KAHN!!!

  • this was an amazing film.

  • Star Trek The Motion Picture was a really well made film. I enjoyed every minute of it. I remember going to see it again in 1983 when it returned to theaters three and a half years after it's initial release and the room was packed. The audience was reaction was just as excited as if it was a new release and this was a year after the release of Star Trek II.

    Star Trek forever!

  • this is a test for you

  • I'm kind of glad that they got rid of the casual uniform McCoy's wearing. Looks like he's going out for a round on the links.

  • Hmmm...Cpt Kirk was Admiral those days, and Decker was the Cpt

  • Decker was originally going to be in the proposed Star Trek series that never got off the ground because they greenlit the movie. A lot of his character was later morphed into Riker on TNG.

  • the trailer says it all, way tooo solemn and self congrulating, its 2001 meets star trek, as an sci fi art house, its lovely as a continuation of the series its way off

  • Agreed. Wrath Of Khan had exactly the right tone.

  • An underrated Trek movie with incredible visual effects, great music, and a nice mood. Trailer is narrated by Orson Welles btw.

  • I just figured that out about Orson Welles.

  • Comment removed

  • It's a teaser

  • GTFOH! That's IT?! The greatest threat the Federation has EVER faced, even to date? More dangerous than the Klingons, the Dominion, and the Borg COMBINED? - and THIS is the best trailer they could come up with?

  • I love late 70's early 80's visual effects!

  • holy shit! 1:09-1:12....i thought it was a fake trailer with Britney Spears in it! NO JOKE!

  • I believe the actress was miss India around that time.

  • Did anyone else notice that the story behind this movie wasnt all that differant then and origional series episode with the floating robot probe that spock mindmelded with, and i cant remember the name of the episode or the name of the robot,(M5 i think) but they are the same in that both robots (from the movie and the show) were sent from earth in the distant past and cam across an alien life foarm that made it intelligent and then they both went home looking for god! not too origional was it

  • Nomad

  • too bad they didnt show McCoy with the beard and disco suit...LOL

  • LOL...McCoy in disco suit and beard scared the crap out of me as a kid. Spock was freaking scary too for a little girl XD

  • RIP Majel Roddenberry

  • Orson Welles' narration of this teaser trailer is best thing about "Star Trek The Motion Picture." Thank God for ST2.

  • No WAY! What about that beautiful 9 foot model of Enterprise (back before everything was CGI), the rousing score, the warp drive effect which set the standard for years to come... Sure maybe it was a bit artistically stale, but there would have never been a ST2 with TMP. It was a baby step, but a step in the right direction nonetheless.

  • I have to agree with thanks51 .... the score alone was tremendous. The plot and even some of the SPFX were not the best, but given all of the behind the scenes issues with the studio, I thought it was a worthy effort.

  • When he says that the adventure is just beginning he wasn't kidding.

  • the storyline to star trek the motion picture was the episode story to the cancelled star trek phase 2 series episode one

  • It is a Teaser only - so why spoiling that Kirk is Admiral? You didn't know that until you saw the Movie the first time.

  • It's like when they showed Enterprise exploding in the ST3:TSFS trailer....

  • @s1977spw Wow, what a stupid comment.

  • Unicron doesn't sell wine before it's time!

  • True, I did see the outtakes from his commercials; but does he find himself an itch to scratch?

  • THX sound at the end..

  • William Shatner: is Captain James T Kirk

Mrs. Pell's Fishsticks: Are even better raw!

  • Orson Welles is the man!

  • The greatest Star Trek Movie advert EVER!!!!!

  • Although I like all the Star Trek movies this is the one I felt they never should have made

  • Don't be disrespectful to Star Wars

  • The movie looks good. Oh how I regret not getting the Star Trek movie box set when I had the chance.

  • This model of the Refit is the best movie model of all time. Easily the best Enterprise ever.

  • i rember this trailer in the movie theatre and i was very excited at the time that this movie came out

  • No, this is the real trailer. I remember it well. Also, all these Star Trek: The Motion Picture trailers had narration by the great Orson Welles.

  • Probably a bullshit trailer that someone with nothing else btter to do put together.

  • No, it was a real trailer. I think that it was ripped from the DVD. I doubt that Paramount would put a fake trailer on one of their DVDs.

  • If they thought it would bring them at least 1 penny, they would.

  • i've never seen this trailer before. does anyone know where it was shown???

  • This movie put me to sleep. ZZZZZZZZZ!

  • u must not like star trek then? star trek is star trek u either like everything or u don't.

  • thats not true at all. I like Star Trek a lot, but that doesn't mean I like Wesley Crusher, Lt. Ilia(sp) or the 5th movie. This movie's ok, but Star Trek II definately improved on the pacing. A lot of it was slow moving models docking with each other(this scene, plus the Vulcan ship delivering Spock for example)I also don't like that the for the sake of saving money, the Excelsior model was turned into the Enterprise B, Reliant the Boseman, and refit Enterprise into Enterprise A

  • idiot, then go watch some meaningless action movie, like Star Wars

  • the first movie is a kind of a kubrick version of star trek

  • My favorite Trek film. Robert Wise was a brilliant director.

  • The thing about this movie is that it really wasn't a movie. It was a way for Paramount to show off the best special effects they had at their disposal at the time. It had a budget of about $35 million. Which, in 1978/79, was a LOT, the equivalent of $120 million today, when it comes to movies.

  • I'm being told this movie is bad. Is it?

  • Its a decent movie. Its not the worst of the movies. It has something good things going for it, state of the art (for the time) special effects, a AMAZING music soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith and an epic story. However, its really slow and its not exactly the best when it comes to the script and such. There are much, MUCH better Star Trek movies to see like ST: II, III, IV, VI and Star Trek First Contact

  • i like this movie the 5th film was terrible and by far the worst

  • Yeah, it was...but I also am not a big fan of the fourth film (although I have it on VHS, along with most of the other films).

  • so instead of telling anyone anything about the fucking movie, they just told people who was acting in it!

  • u know what? i'll rent this movie and judge it for myself.

  • This movie wasn't as good as other ST movies mainly The Rath of Kahn but I looking back I loved this film because of the way it was implemented with different camera angles, new special effects in the late seventies. It's like the old star trek but just more spectacular.

  • u know, i luv your enthusiasm

  • I'm sorry for anyone who likes this film...but for me this one hasn't one redeeming quality. It's worse than Star Trek V!

  • Are we talking about the same film here??

  • Well, in defense of ST:TMP, what could you expect for a film that was delivered wet to the premiere? In other words, the print used in the feature premiere was freshly struck and rushed.

The film was released before it was really done. Because of the time constraints, certain things that were promised were never delivered, such as a 70mm presentation.

  • hmmm, my bad. i shouldn't judge things before i see them.

  • and Orson Welles as the narrator!

  • I haven't seen this since the late 70's :O Crikey!

  • Anyone notice what sounds spookily like the THX noise between 1:34 and 1:38?

  • Those Enterprise drydock shots are still somehow some of the most compelling/convincing FX shots. Not dated at all.

  • yeah, but the acting was WAY over the top, which killed it.

  • No, it was writing and the editing that killed this movie.

  • I think it just everything involved with this movie took itself way too seriously. thats what i believe more than anything.

  • So beautiful... it hurts my eyes.

  • "So beautiful" totallyAnnihailated writes. That was what they aimed for in this film. Rather than a shoot em up, they decided on a beautiful love story between Decker and the Ball headed woman. They wanted beautiful visuals and a love story to impress many women. (And the men were supposed to be impressed with the cast coming together and Kirks behavior.) They wanted women to leave in tears, "What a beautiful movie." Beautiful is the word, not action packed.

  • Yes I agree, I don't know why this is the least favorite Trek movie for so many fans. For me this is the most perfect expression of Gene Roddenberry's vision of Star Trek (along with the first season of TNG, the only season in which he had any degree of direct control). The visuals and overall design of the film, the pacing and story make this really the most beautiful Trek movie.

  • Yes the story focused on love, human bonds and coming together, saying that love is the most important thing. That makes it more adult than "Star Wars" But in time, the attitude towards this film might change for new audiences not expecting cowboys and indians in space.

  • What will not change is this movie's often self-righteous and high-handed attitude about a somewhat dull story and the fatal inability to discern real human emotion from feverish melodrama.

  • Real human emotion is melodramatic!

  • nice
