@Candidulus Thanks for the suggestion, the Charlie Rose interview is much more substantive than this piece. But I think you get a better sense of the man, as he lived most of his life, by watching the Rose interviews directly preceding his physical decline. A great mind.
Everyone should see his last interview with Charlie Rose. It's the only time I've ever seen Charlie tear up. A wonderful man and a brilliant writer, Tony Judt, you are dearly missed
Omg this man was so brave !!. My Aunty died of Motor Neuron Disease last year this video brings back memories R.i.P Tony x Iv set up a Fundraise event for my family friends and other people of the community to take part in For Motor Neuron Disease
We are walking through 2-3 towns and doing it fancy dress it takes part on this sunday . If anyone wants to donate to my just giving donation site please get in contact. This Man was so brave i want to help more people like him x
I was very moved to hear of Tony Jundt's death. I had read some of his writing before, but never seen his picture or video. Wonderful man, he oozed humanity. Brilliant mind, great heart. My heart felt condolences to his family.
P.S. I was born and raised in Iran, though I have been an American for two thirds plus of my life. In the most heart felt way I can say it: Tony Jundt was a great tribute to the Jewish people and equally so to all of humanity.
@theprankster100 If all Jewish intellectuals had the character of Tony Judt, Noam Chomsky and Norm Finkelstein, antisemitism would disappear forever from the global politic.
Such a pity he left this world at 62. I absolutely loved Postwar and his writings in the NY Review of Books. When reading his writings, you felt the immensity and passion that makes us love history, without losing any sense of the facts. A rare feat indeed. The NYT Obituary states this from him: "A well-organized society is one in which we know the truth about ourselves collectively, not one in which we tell pleasant lies about ourselves.”
What a lesson of optimism and courage under the most difficult circumstances! Very glad to have seen this--hitherto I've only read books and articles by Prof. Judt, this video would probably not be his choice for a first "Live" impression, but the vigour and clarity of his writing is very much present in character: "le style, ç'est l'homme!".
this is a beautiful tribute to our will and grace as personified by tony judt.
tony, from one pals to another, keep up the good fight against this heinous scourge, and continue to show others how to progress gracefully...you're still teaching us and it is such a worthwhile and life affirming lesson. thank you
p.s. i'm glad you elucidated your diagnosis as a "progressive variant" of als. it took me awhile to understand that m.n.d./a.l.s. is an umbrella term.
