This dude didn't do his leopard gecko research, I've only had mine for a little less then a month and I can point out a mistake or two.
1. The substrate should be something large or reptile carpet. Small substrates can cause impaction, which doesn't always happen but you shouldn't take the risk. It damages their digestive system (obviously) and can cause paralysis.
2. The UV isn't required, their nocturnal (sleep during the day, awake at night)
Leopard geckos live on packed clay and rock outcrops NOT SAND sand causes impaction and will kill your gecko!!!! Crushed walnut is one of the worst substrates to use it expands in a leopard geckos digestive system causing impaction even faster!!! Leopard geckos don't even need UVB lighting!!! They only nerd a heat pad and a low wattage red heat bulb!!! You also put the water dish on the hot side!!!
This is why I don't listen to any minimum wage pet store employee or someone who thinks he's a r
leopard geckos dont need UVB lighting the only heating and lighting they need is a heat light thats it no UVB or day light is needed just a RED heat light cuz at night is when the geckos come out so they cant see red :)
Pretty sure leopard geckos specifically have no vertical climbing ability... not saying you shouldn't use a lid, just saying that using one for the purpose of keeping your gecko in is pretty stupid. There's other reasons to have it, though..
@Wangin8r I thought that too, then my Leo climbed out and hid in my roomate's closet for 3 days.. I use a lid now. They are curious and will find ways out. My leo is very good at climbing his decorations.
@Wangin8r u r stupid, all lizards, espeically the leopard geckos, have to ablity to climb, not peerfectly vertical, unless there r some stuff to climb on like rock or ... other stuff
I, personally, wouldn't use Repti-Carpet either. I used that when I first started keeping Leopard Geckos, and noticed that a lot of them would get their toes/claws and teeth snagged on it. So, I started using paper towels as substrate for my babies/juveniles, and slate/tile for my adults. However, I know lots of people that use it, and haven't had a problem. I just wouldn't want to run the risk myself. But, yeah, I definitely wouldn't use sand or crushed ANYTHING.
@LycanthropicArt Hi, I'm getting a beardie and i'm 11 years old, I'm wondering which substrate I should use, Maybe calcium sand? And I've never seen a good video on youtube on how to clean your terrarium. Maybe a link? If you know?
Hey bud, check out bearded dragon.org and look for their care sheet. It'll answer any questions you may have. If not, let me know. Bearded Dragons are awesome lizards.
bill horneck knows shit.. and dont leave a comment on my channel saying thanks for sharing reptile tv, because your just avoiding arguing over it. why dont you actually respond
Hey I use sand for my leo. but i take her out of the cage when i feed her everyday. like a snake I've got a badass hunting environment for my leo i use reptile-liner for the hunting tank.
@Leopardgecko502 mars would kill us because of the freezing tempratures and lack of air. not the sand....maby if you and the rest of the dumbass reptile comunity would learn to properly take care of ur animals you wouldent have to worry about impaction from sand.
rule of thumb, this goes for almost ALL reptiles, feed them outside their cage in a feeder box...i use a plain 10 gallon tub. nothing special but insures my reptile is safe, is tame, and eliminated the possibility of imapction
@CemetaryGatesML Fine, you can kill your gecko's, have fun watching them slowly die. I had a gecko die from sand and I will never use sand again. THEIR HABITAT IS CLAY AND ROCK, NOT SAND.
@Leopardgecko502 .... like i said, ur an idiot... my leo will not ddie from sand cuz im a smart owner and feed all my animals in a feeder bin, your ignorent, nieve and lazy, thats why u use reptile carpet.
their habitat is a mix of sand, clay and rock, not all of them live on clay/rocks, and most of them do come into contact with sand, and loose substate that resembles sand, like clay dust. so please STFU. you dont know shit about reptiles
@CemetaryGatesML They don't have to be eating to get impaction dumbass. If you pay attention once in a while, you notice that they lick their suroundings, which includes the substrate. This causes a impaction that is not noticed until a long period of time, until it is too late. Like I said, I lost a leo from impaction. I use carpet because I care for the safety of my leos, unlike you.
@Leopardgecko502 so this is how stupid you are... in nature they also lick their suroundings ... did you know the diseases that repti-carpet gives if not cleaned cuz the shit and piss builds up inside the carpet? when was time u replaced / washed ur carpet?
lastly i have leopard geckos for over 15 years, ive had 7, gave 2 away about 5 years ago cuz they were 15 years old, ( gave them to a place called reptilia. still have the other 5, they are all 9 years old and very healthy LIVING on SAND!
@CemetaryGatesML Your obviously making this up, any person can see that their gecko is licking there suroundings. Dumbass. I clean the carpet EVERY 5 DAYS. I dont leave shit around in the cage like you, and for the last time, they live on clay, and rock. The only sand they encounter is a extremely thin layer. Get your facts right, idiot.
@Leopardgecko502 im oviously not making this up, shit and piss is very toxic, hence why the invention of the toilet.
its good you clean it every 5 days, if you dident the toxins can build up.
not dumbass...dosent matter if its a small amout, its still sand and they will get impacted, byw, you know they need to eat ALLOT of sand in a quick period to develope impaction, otherwise it just flows through their dijestive track, idiot.
@CemetaryGatesML For one, you spelled obvious wrong. :P Two, not all of the sand goes through the digestive track, most stays behind, without you seeing any of it. This causes build up in the gecko, and doesnt allow food to go through. Impaction can be a very quick process, or a very long one. Just type in "impacted Leopard Gecko" and you will see the affects of sand.
@Leopardgecko502 trust me, i've heard this from manny reptile guys at expo's and reptile havens like reptillia ( local place) a gecko licking a bit of sand usualy 90% will flow through its track, that other 10% will eventualy leave, some may stay, but not nearly enough to cause any problems in the long run.
these #'s drasticly reduce if you use natural sand ( like i do ) or calcium sand.
when a gecko misses its target and bites the sand, NOW THATS A PROBLEM !
@CemetaryGatesML Not all new leopard gecko owners will know to feed their geckos in a seperate container, Its just easier to avoid sand usage and save the issue of worrying about impaction...especially when the leopard geckos are babies.
@Leopardgecko502 yup, most dont know jack shit about their exotic pets. and it angers me.
i keep my baby hatchlings on a repti-carpet when the born cuz the tend to lick more stuff as babys and are more vulnerable to impaction. as they get a bit older ( i usualy see then by then ) but eventually i move them to sand. i feed ALL my reptiles in a seperate feeder bin.
it is best to use Natural sand ( not that fake shit ) if you use it right, but its easyer to use carpet.
you should always use reptile carpet for leopard geckos. But bearded dragons can live in sand when they get a little bigger as long as you feed them outside of their cage.
lol and you call me kid pussie ,, i got a beared dragon and he live on a sand when he was baby ,, and he is not dead or sick so shut up kid you even dont know me you retard
the thing is that they could get impaction from it. Not all do but some people don't want to take that chance. My baby Bearded Dragons are on reptile carpet right now but when they grow larger I will give them sand.
its a good sand and reptile need sand so shut up peaple who doewsint put they beared dragon on sand but the decore is not good or the hiding place and he need a big rock to sleep on it and some lamp for the night and day and heat and dont blame nothing about the sand cuz beared dragon live on desert so shut up idiots but if you got a baby beared dragon i fink fewweek it need carpet when you fink its the right time to put on the sand ... but they reptile they need sand to play on it and digging
this guy knows nothing about reptiles he is just a man sent there to sell the product (by the way i' used walnut bedding for all my life and all my lizards are fine, acctually my herp vet recommended it because it's easy to digest for geckos):)
