GREAT interview/study. I'd love to see something simular about Black Americans vs African Immigrant students. The polarization that seems to exists between these 2 groups. I've know ALOT of African Immigrants from the Caribean Islands/Africa ... they tell me quite often about the lack of coheasion or mutual understanding that is lacking between these folks & Black American students. A cultural divide that more often then not causes a friction between them. Might be another intresting topic.

I went thru this ignorance in the 50's, and today 2012 my Grands tell me some of their peers are picked on because they are dark or light. For instance when people say Beyonce is attractive, it is because she has light skin, narrow face, curly hair etc. and also for your knowledge beyonce has French blood on her mother side.

Great Story! I too am guilty of being color struck. A lot has to do with parenting too. Now that I'm older I find myself revisiting a lot of views that were instilled in me and changing them to what I feel is right.
skin color is not a preference black people. What if a white person said that they dont really like dark skin, people would be outraged. what was more scary is that these kids were at a college were they are suppose to be getting educated. But the comments that passed as preference seemed like prejudice to me I don't think people even know the difference anymore.

I really liked this documentary. But there's something that I always noticed with AA people. When women are asked what they prefer, most of the time its darker complexioned men, but when you ask the men, its either "Oh, I like light skinned girls" or "I usually talk to light skinned girls but I won't pass a sister up either." Its always the same argument.

@elenavlada She's not the lightest of the lighter tones in people of African decent. But, she's definitely in the "light skinned" department. She could be considered brown skin, but that all depends on your own definition. Most people consider someone like Gabrielle Union as brown skin, and someone like Queen Latifah as being the "darker" side of "light skinned." *sigh* All of this is a bunch of mess to seperate us and sadly we've bought a lot of stock in it.

3 days ago I was with some friends for her childs naming ceremony @ her mothers house (Predominantly dark skinned Nigerians) with my 3 yr old daughter and commented on her dark and light skin doll (that i made for her as none in store) saying that the lighter one was more acceptable.
Well you would have thought that as 90% of Nigerians are dark/black skinned and you've not experience what my ancestors went through in the west that people wouldn't have such a mind set. Perhaps because a lot of Africans are now living in the UK they are being exposed to lighter skinned black people and taking up that strange attitude.
I wasn't too surprised when the comment was made about my daughters doll as the people who made the comment were my friends who over the years have become more westernised. I know thier comments were due to being brought up and influenced by western society and from thier own experiences of others commenting on thier skin tone.

I really liked this documentary. But there's something that I always noticed with AA people. When women are asked what they prefer, most of the time its darker complexioned men, but when you ask the men, its either "Oh, I like light skinned girls" or "I usually talk to light skinned girls but I won't pass a sister up either." She could be considered brown skin, but that all depends on your own definition. Most people consider someone like Gabrielle Union as brown skin, and someone like Queen Latifah as being the "darker" side of "light skinned." *sigh* All of this is a bunch of mess to seperate us and sadly we've bought a lot of stock in it.
