When Richard says, "no matter what you start with it always ends up being so much less." That is a heartbreaking line and the way it's delivered makes me cry everytime. This movie is so powerful in its themes of human emotion and the frustrations of life.
man this movie has so much integrity and says so much. my mum has had depression for the past ten years and my brother has also developed it in the past couple years. i recognise that vacancy. this movie means a lot to me. I have been meaning to watch it for a long time. Thanks for posting.
her words are so simple yet so haunting. Virginia Woolf you are an inspiration and your mind was brilliant. It makes me want to say i am a woman and i am alive and i share this sometimes sadness.
@SandrineSoprano She is supposed to be an overtly dramatic, bimbo in she-devil. I wouldn't hold that against her, she was also extremely over the top in death becomes her and its one of my favorite movies and has been for years. I love Meryl and feel she's an amazing actress and deserves respect. Please don't be a hater!
@Endrawnia Because Mrs. Dalloway is the character who has events in her life and thoughts that juxtapose to those of Clarissa Vaughn's. Mrs. Dalloway's first name is also Clarissa and she was in love with a woman named Sally; but, in the novel, she is married to a man named Richard - because it was outrageous to have a sapphist relationship at the time the novel was written. The Richard in this film is drawing those comparison's between Clarissa Vaughn and Clarissa Dalloway.
"I wanted to be a writer, that's all. I wanted to write about it all. Everything that happens in a moment. The way the flowers looked when you carried them in your arms. This towel, how it smells, how it feels, this thread. All our feelings, yours and mine. The history of it, who we once were. Everything in the world. Everything all mixed up, like it's all mixed up now. And I failed. I failed. No matter what you start with it ends up being so much less. Sheer fucking pride and stupidity."
Meryl Streep for President!

Nicole Kidman is supposed to be an emaciated 59 y/o Virginia Woolf in her final days? Yeah,..right..
jdollinter 8 months ago
@jdollinter Actually this plays in 1923. She was 41 then. Only the suicide scene at the beginning of the movie plays in 1941.

One of the very best (music, story, acting, etc.); not surprisingly only appreciated by a (relatively) few.

They seem to have some morbid fascination for suicide, don't you think?

I usually think Meryl Streep is overrated but she's really good in this.

why did he call her mrs. dalloway when in the beginning she said her name is clarissa vaughan?
Endrawnia 1 year ago
@Endrawnia He's comparing her to Mrs. Dalloway from the Virginia Woolf novel.
