@kaiserzero61 In 2009, it did. Back in 2005, it was runner-up to FFVII. And back in 2004, it didn't even get that far because FFVII confronted and defeated it during the peliminaries. If you want to know what was runner-up that year, it was Chrono Trigger (ironic since FFVII and Chrono Trigger are my 1st and 2nd favorite video games of all time respectively as well). My third favorite was Sonic 2, and my fourth favorite wasn't even out in 2004 (it was released in 2009).

I am a fan of FFVII (and only FFVII; not Advent Children, Dirge of Cerberus, or Crisis Core which was pretty decent). And I often make fun of it. How? Well, because it's basically anime on a PSX game, and that stuff is always subjective to a little parody. I don't mind naming my chocobos after little itterations of various characters from a film franchise I will not name, but I reckon that you might figure it out. After all, it is a notorious film franchise for a certain reason.

Let me name a good number of them off: I have played almost all the Final Fantasy games, I have played almost all the Sonic games, I had played almost all the Mario, Zelda and other Nintendo titles, Call of Duty, Halo, Half Life, WoW, Galaga, every title in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (which is 40+ games), Suikoden I, II, III, and V, Mass Effect One and Two, Crash and Spyro, a couple Megaman games, Metal Gear Solid 1, 2 and 3 (don't have PS3), etc.)

If you wanted to be reasonably rational, you should have listed other RPG's like Chrono Trigger, FFVI, and Mario RPG.

Now, granted, I had more fun playing FFVII than any game I have ever played (Halo was kinda meh, never got good opportunities to play Mario or Zelda, and there is no way anybody could coerce me into giving GTA a chance). But that was due to several other factors as well as gameplay. If I wanted to focus moreso on gameplay and gameplay alone, Sonic 2 would have won handsdown for me, but it didn't. Because I consider FFVII to be a better game. Thus, the reason why FFVII is my favorite game.

1. Awkward translation (not horrible, but it makes it hard to interpret what the characters are saying and in what tone they are saying some of their lines).

2. Vincent Valentine, one of the most useless characters in RPG history (at least he's optional, but why did he need a game?)

Well over half of the major cast either don't develop, or they do but seem to have suddenly stopped developing somewhere in the middle of the story (Cloud, Tifa, Aeris and Cait Sith are the only characters in that game that continued developing all throughout (although Aeris died before disk 2, so in a way, she did stop developing halfway through, but we won't hold that against her).

There! Three big flaws (might be more), and they aren't overly relevent in the game itself.

Dirge of Cerberus was a very generic action game with very little to offer aside for backstory for the quite possibly the most overrated character in the game (Vincent Valentine). I don't hate Crisis Core myself. It's got a good story, the characters are great, and while the gameplay is pretty indepth, it falls flat on it's face for being extremely repetitious (every mission, side or main, is basically just go kill some things). CC is still pretty good, but doesn't hold a candle to FFVII.

Actually, I can pretty much make fun of the characters by themselves. After all, devilboy did it and he was just joking around (he got me; I'll give him that). Aside from Vincent, I don't really hate anybody (in fact, I'm probably the only person in the world who actually liked Cait Sith as a character) in Final Fantasy VII. But still, you got to admit that the game does do a pretty good job making fun of them for us (I always loved kicking Red XIII with a soccer in Costel Del Sol).

Yes. Even if Barret was a stereotype, one must take into account that stereotypes are not strictly made up; they were concieved by the very people being stereotyped in the first place. Of course, it is as bad to stereotype as it is to gossip, but the difference is that these people have brought it upon themselves. It isn't racist; this is how they had presented themselves to be in the first place. Thus is how stereotypes have came to be. Thus, Barret is both a representation and stereotype.

PS: FFVII artstyle and narrative are derivitive of anime/manga. Most of them aren't anywhere close to being realistic, so of course FFVII is going to have a few tounge-and-cheek moments and scenes that are just downright goofy (Cloud wearing a dress, Cloud capturing a chocobo, Red XIII disguised as a Shinra souldier on a ship full of morons, and Cloud and his date being randomly casted into a play about ballerina kings and dragons among others). But hey? At that time, we had Pokemon too.

However, if anything, the reason why he is black was so that Square could expand on the welcome of different world nationalities, and never intended to cast Barret as a stereotype. So in the end, one must ponder: Was the stereotype intentional? And is it relevent? And is it worth throughing a hissy fit over?

This review was really useless. As a huge gamer, I can tell you that this was a complete waste of time. It was a little comical, but it's not right to tell viewers that they shouldn't play the game.

The game was released in 1997, so picking on it's graphics is a joke. 11 years ago, that was about all companies had to work with.

Need89HELP, the game had bad graphics not because it was huge. The entire world was explorable on each disc, so the entire game could fit on one disc. What took up 3 discs were the cut scenes. CDs have a capacity of about 750mb, much smaller then DVDs. So if FF7 didn't have so many FMVs, the game could have been the same size with much better graphics fit onto one disc.

FF6 was way better. ff7 was just a 3d version of ff6 but with a "for dummies" materia/battle system and a washed down storyline. Just about everything that happened in the story for ff6 happened in ff7 but didn't make as much sense for some reason.

FF7 might have been the birth of JRP's popularity in the western countries, but at the price of the death of a once good franchise.

The battle system of 7 made it fun, for noobs. It removed classes and left characters' individuality up to their weapons and Limit Breaks. Every character was a red mage in 7.

The story, Cloud is the male version of Tera. A near identical "plot twist" that happens to Tera happens to Cloud.

And finally, you say tomato I say tomato, you say plot twists I say plot holes. That's what FF7 had, a shit load of them.

I don't understand how anyone can like 8 more then 7. don't get me wrong 8 is a good game, but 7 has so many more plot twists and sidequest's.

part 2: using characters thats almost like right offs of ff7 characters as squall(cloud), rinoa(yuffie), zell(tifa), irvine(vincent), and they add a few new fighters that uses different weapons with ff8 theres really not much fun to it drawing magic( i mean for the ones that didn't cheat to get it) + there are a little difference between those characters i listed but for the most of it nothing really that different from their weapons or fighting.
