I have too say , I'm not a big fan of the comercial Hip/Hop but this sound very underground, the video is well made and it sound like a protest too the way owr socity works, like Hip/Hop used too be, i can hear some Massive Attack in it, yes. Annyway i felt warm and cold by hear this song, it felt like music use too feel... true the heart, too me this is very good. keep going the way you do guys
Thank you erik - We are working on touring in Europe next Fall, and would love to keep you in touch with us. Is that ok? Let us know more about what you are doing. Thanks, Joey Alkes of DJ Monkey
Never claimed to be like either of those acts! Just put forwarded the comments of others. It is amazing though that a legitimate music critic would have the time to join YouTube just to criticize an errant e-mail??
I am a music critic, and received notice of this video via an unsolicited e-mail. The subject line was "half gorillaz half massive attack ..." which fails in two respects: First, trying to ride the coattail popularity Gorillaz is experiencing right now is beyond obvious. And to compare it to Massive Attack on any level is such an insult to the band and to Tricky. Where do you people come up with this stuff?
Mick McMains is the featured singer. He was the lead singer for legendary guitarist Earl Slick's NYC. The rapper is Lil' TipToe, co-author and rapper on Bad Azz's "Word On the Street". The song was written by Mick with Joey Alkes, who co-wrote the Plimsoul's and Goo Goo Dolls' song, "A Million Miles Away." The video was made by Drew Hatter of NMotion Media out of Riverside, California. Thanks Festival, for the wonderful comment and wish.
I really like it. Atmosphere is hypnotic and the song is "important". Who is the featuring singer? Excuse me for my english,in Italy we say "in bocca al lupo" "go in the wolf's mouth" to wish good luck.
Is it me or does the the guy singing the hook looks like the former member of Britain's Massive Attack or affiliate of that group. The concept is similiar to a song by Tricky formerly of Massive Attack. The storyline are on the similiar path of politics and all the other musical elements. a matter a fact the singer was also in the Tricky's song, looks older now, I am almost sure. In a time of flashing bling and shaking ass on videos this needs more respect. Cool.
Being a fan of Joe Frank’s myself I can understand Blake’s appreciation of his work, but don’t for the life of me understand why he is so negative to this work. Certainly it is not a perfect 10, but it is a solid music video with a heartfelt message and an excellent blend of old-school pop, spoken word and hip-hop. What more is there to say?
I am an independent filmmaker myself, and I don't understand the negativity to this video. First of all, it took alot of balls to incorporate the rap. A perfect blend of musical genres, with a very pertinent message, that sounds damn good!! I like the German submarine concept - but I think it lacks black & white footage of the streets that the rapper is talking about - in that respect, I feel the rapper got short changed. But that is just an artistic difference.
good compositing. definately gets corny at some points. almost seems like a parody of itself at times. The MC definately takes himself too seriously, but i like the Joe Frank tone. In fact, fuck this and check out Joe Frank, he's done this song 1,000 times and 1,000 times better.
You've obviously spent a great deal of time, viewing and re-viewing this video. When one is repulsed by a video, one simply stops watching. Sadly, you're very invested in hatred toward DJ Monkey (threatened?) and feel the need to hit below the belt. The video itself addresses the damage humans do to one another. Sad and ironic that YOU are the sort of hateful person this video touches upon. Good luck. Be kind.
This video brilliantly illustrates the state of the human condition. Sad, how easily one human spits venom onto another...so easily, so thoughtlessly.
DJ Monkey, good on you for having the guts to put your talent and political beliefs "out there". And shame on you, critic, shame on you, for the cruel "critical analysis". U-Boat--a brilliant, progressive, compassionate video.
Wow - "Worst Video!" Considering your profile says you are a 105 year-old female who joined just to revies this video, I am Impressed. Might start a new category of video voting 'youtube's Worst Videos'!
Another brilliant video from my very favorite Rock/Rap/Bebop Jazz group or you could just say DJ Monkey because there is no other band like them!

After watching the video once, for the first time:
This is extremely original.
The messages being conveyed are fair enough, but maybe they are too obvious.
The music video is interesting, I am seeing bono in the vocalist with the glasses. Strange.
The classic rock elements to this song are an added bonus.
