Check out the article about the teens memories getting backstage at a James Taylor concert and his tribute to MTB.Marshall Tucker Band: Searching For a Rainbow. Great Song Running like the Wind.
Exceptional. An emotional song for sure. It's something else too to hear Toy singing it on those dozen or so audios that exist of him touring with his band. What Toy lacked as a singer he bled out via his guitar and vocals. Just look at the intensity in Toy's eyes. A hauntingly beautiful song. Very powerful, imo at least.
I've been a musician for over 40 years. I've played and heard every genre of music out there. This song always rings back as being in my top 10 favorites. Thank you so very much for posting. How the hell did you get this footage anyway?
Toy Caldwell, and the MTB, are absolutely one of a kind. They could play ANY style you want. One of the best I've seen, and I've seen every band! They were expert musicians.
What an awesome video! I loved the solo interplay between Toy and Jerry especially! The Marshall Tucker Band belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
These guys made MAGIC in their day... and I am glad that some of them are still here to continue. No one can do it like they did. They are a huge part of what influenced our country music of today. I will never forget them, the way they shaped our culture of the 70's & 80's, and the way I feel every time I hear their songs.
Thank you for your magic guys... it was such a gift. I still hear your songs blowing on the breeze.
Heaven must really be somethin' with so much talent up there.
because Toy Caldwell was a rarity, and there are a LOT of no-talents that are real pretty... teenage girls buy pretty, not talent. And teenage girls are all that's left that BUY music. So the record companies whore them... good music is out there, you just gotta dig for a it. Google Kevin Fowler, Hadden Sayers and the Bottle Rockets.
I love how they flirted with jazz. Charlie Daniels has a similar song called "No Place Left To Go". I suggest you search for it right here on YouTube. You'll be glad you did !
great post, MTB is probably my 2nd favorite band of all time...Skynyrd takes the number 1 spot in my book, but it really depends on what kind of mood you're in, they have two completely different sounds, both are phenominal. Long live The Marshall Tucker Band!
WOW!!!! This is one of my favorite songs of all time... every once in a while I just keep looping it over and over... of all Southern Rock bands, they were my favorite. Had the chance to see MT in New Orleans over New Years 1978. I was there as a member of the Penn State Marching Band and we were playing Alabama for the national title (lost 14-7... still haven't fully recovered). Didn't go to the MT concert and to this day regret it... anyway fantastic post thanks!!!
Not that tough. Love both of them. But gotta go with Skynyrd. I was lucky to see both bands. SKYNYRD before the crash (rip) with Ronnie. SKYNYRD are still the measuring stick for southern rock (remember they blew the Stones off the stage in England). 1st band with 3 lead guitars. Nobody even comes close
I used to play this song over and over, in fact I am sure the couple who lived below me hated this song, I played it that much. The line "these aging eyes," has come to past sooner than I thought it would. Time goes by TOO quickly.
Still my favorite band, I was lucky enough to see them 25 or 30 times through the 70's and 80's. Doug Grey is a helluva nice guy and God Bless him for trying to keep the MTB going. I traded e-mails with George, got one from him a few weeks beofre his death. Wished I'd kept it.
There will never be another MTB, Tommy, Toy and George, we'll ride the range again someday, until then may the good Lord hold you in the plam of his hands.
I miss them everyday. Saw them many times over the years, but the originals can never be replaced. It seems watered down and faded.I bought the bar in Connecticut where I saw Toy play last in 1993 0r 1994. Many late nights I could still hear him playing in my mind, thumb pickin and leaning into his guitar....Vios con dios boys. You made a difference in my life, and still do when it gets a little rough out there...
I agree with you 100% Doug Gray is trying to keep it going and can't fault him for that. But yes without Toy and Tommy and George it's not the MTB boys playing it's not the same. Saw them in 81 and will never forget it. They belong int RNR hall of fame.
saw them in colorado in 77 and I will always remenber the chills and inner euphoria I felt.this was an untimely end to a timeless treasure in music yet I have reared my kids on them..lookin forward to the big jam in the sky
IM 32, and its not of my time., however, when i heard it thru a good friend, I thought it was just awesome. it jumps all boundries and it transends more than i ever thought.. this is how all music should be done live!!
I saw this same tour in 1980 @ Red Rocks in Colorado. They opened with this song there as well. It is probably their best & most heartfelt jam. RIP BOYS!!!!!!!!!! God Bless and long live southern rock!!!!
I couldn't agree more.Saw MTB in Jersey in 73and SKYNYRD in 76 and don't forget the OUTLAWS. There will never be bands with talent like that anymore to carry the torch. Thank god we still have the ALLMANS.
that wind has slowed, time has blown steady moving on,brings me chills that i survived, still runnin',thank God for this peaceful breeze that blows when i hear my favoite song
There's a lot of debate around the "best" southern rock guitarist of that era. It's an impossible metric to gauge, but I always liked Toy best. He was always the most improvisational of that era in my mind. I never heard Toy play the same solo twice. His "Ramblin" and "This Old Cowboy" solos were really different, and his bandmates were so talented and connected that they moved seamlessly with his interpretation. It's why MTB was my favorite then and now.
Have been and always will be one of the best live bands ever.
