I used 3D Studio Max, specifically version 8 for these but the same results can be achieved using later versions as well. For the last shot I used RealFlow to generate realistic fluid dynamics and then imported the mesh into 3D Studio Max.
As far as the actual video goes I used Adobe After Effects CS3
There are tons of tutorials out there for reactor. I didn't really use any because a lot of this I learned in school and the rest was just playing around. I did in fact use mental ray for the shiny look. If you switch your renderer to mental ray and put a raytrace material as the reflection map then it will reflect anything like a mirror, it's just a matter of lowering it.
