the original anime pays homage to certain anime and kid drama. The defense force uniform looks like the uniform worn by the guys in Ultraman. and the robot was just the fad at that time.

Gate Keepers is an AWESOME Anime. Definitely deserves more attention than it was able to get. I so badly want to play that game. Unfortunately it's not available here in the U.S. though.
