  • funny they are the best at this!!

  • I think the tune, the style, as done by the Wonders, was familiar to me because of The Knack, not because of 60s music. Obviously, it came way after Get The Knack, but NOW I know why I bought the soundtrack to the movie later on - I just made the connection.

  • Whoa. Way too fast. The Wonders were the best!

  • @Bridgett30 Yea. It kinda lost some 'groove' in the translation.

  • I loved The Knack, I also loved the Tom Hank's movie, now I see why this song was so familiar in the movie

  • @tracysrocket The song was in the movie first, though... this song is a sort of homage to all of the bubblegum-rock of the 60's starting with the Beatles "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and onto Tommy James and the Shondells, the Archies, and many others. So if it seemed familiar in the movie, it was it was supposed to. Others have covered the thing as well,

  • This video don't sync with the music %-)

  • I wonder what happened to the Ohneaders?

  • @Razor8472 They got dumped in Pittsburgh.

  • You can tell The Beatles inspired them. XD

  • this is not the knack you fat fucking sack of shit.

  • this is awesome, I actually like this a lot more than the wonders version, because this is an actual band, not a band from a movie, and these guys put some more energy in it, this sounds like what a real performance of the song would have sound like by a garage band in the 60s.

sorry wonders fans, but they sound too "clean", you can tell the song was not actually recorded in the 60s.

this sounds more like what the beatles could have done with the song!!!. this is awesome!!!.

  • @kainthevampireduck I'd agree that the version on the soundtrack is too polished. The Oneders performance of it in the talent show scene and the subsequent performance recordings in the rest of the film - however - are well nuanced to give the feeling that an actual band has been working on the tune and the sound feels appropriately raw w/o sacrificing quality. The filmmakers clearly did all of their pre-class reading/listening and the experience is all the richer for it.

  • the singing is weird...

  • Stay good....with a new move!!

  • faggots!

  • The onders did it best

  • it sounds so much like the beatles i like it

  • The Oh Knee Derz did that thing better. thumbs up yes?

  • the oh need ers

  • Written by Tom Hanks

  • @FanOfFab4

it was actually written by Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne

  • my ears are bleeding.

  • @PricelessR So is you ass.

  • The Oneders!

  • The movie version was better.

  • Best song since 'Every Breath You Take"!!!! Where can I fiind a copy?!?!?!?

  • Am I the only one who thinks that the Song ..Serious Fun is an more then an a awesome song?

  • Wow... Never knew that The Knack covered this song... Wish I could have seen them live.

  • He sounds like Roy Orbison wit a lil beatles style Cool!

  • @SoulKissin Fieger wasn't arguing in the attic, of course. He had obtained a multi-million dollar judgment, and he and this Irish defense guy were arguing over interest on the judgment. I think it was in Geoff Neithercut's court.

Anyway, whenever the guy would zing Fieger, Fieger would get a smile on the corner of his mouth, and vice-versa. Some guys just like to argue, the way some guys like to fight.

  • lol

  • I miss The Knack! :-(

  • @silverballs4 me too! They always surprised you with new songs.

  • I once met Jeff Fieger in an elevator -- I looked at him quizzically, and then asked, "Aren't you that guy who's brother was in that band?" Cracked him up.

  • @BrianMChampion that's funny! The Knack to the 7th floor, please. lol

  • @SoulKissin Only trouble is that the Circuit Court building in downtown Flint, Michigan only has five floors. Well, there's a sixth floor, but it's designated as "A" on the buttons on the elevator, and if you go up there -- which I only did once -- you'll find that it's all musty and just has boxes of old files and such -- and pipes that are probably still coated with asbestos. I saw Jeff Fieger there argue once with an Irish lawyer (who kissed the Blarney Stone) but that's a different story.

  • I like the Wonders version better.

  • @harrymannjr10001 they're both good!

  • @SoulKissin Except the vocalist here is obviously straining his range

  • @harrymannjr10001 - You mean the Oneders? ;)

  • @harrymannjr10001 this is the original version.... but the other is better....

  • @wtffactory1 I agree.

  • @wtffactory1 This is NOT the original version, the original version was written and recorded for the Tom Hanks film. This is a cover.

  • @harrymannjr10001 can we limit this to a civil discussion, please?

  • @StSunrider Ask nerdflanders he started it,

  • @harrymannjr10001 As in "I wonder what ever happened to The Oh-needers?".

  • sooo someone tell me now these guys or the wonders put the songs out??? like is playtone wrong??? let me know?

  • @dburton210521 it was a new song, made to sound like an old song...to that era. It came from the Tom Hanks movie first. the knack covered it....knack style.

  • @dburton210521 DAAAAAA!!!! wonders were made in hollywood / the kanck came form the garage late 70's !!!!!!!!

  • @dburton210521

The song was written in 1963 I believe, but no one ever put released it before the movie.

  • @noneya85 The song was written by the bass player from Bowling for Soup. It won the songwriting competition issued by the producers asking for a title song for their movie.

  • @mattrussell Fountains of Wayne, not Bowling for Soup, my bad.

  • @dburton210521

    "Oneders"

  • The Knack was doing the Wonders way before The Wonders were a gleam in anybody's eyes. Long live The Knack!

  • Fieger's subpar vocals demonstrate the talent of Adam Schlessinger

  • Too fast and too mechanical. Not a good cover, even though the Knack are excellent, in general, and their own material is equally good.

  • If you think they wrote this, you obviously have missed out on the film, That Thing You Do....

  • The Knack just keeps doing it

  • great song: performance…gaaak

  • that is perfect.

  • I love the lick he sings on 'try & try' but it sounds like he's missing (coming in underneath) a lot of notes. Is it just me?

Never heard this - thanks for posting !

  • @hibob418 This is unfortunately, not perfect. You're right. He's flat on most notes.

  • Good cover, sorry to hear about Doug.

  • Lyrically weak.

  • @squidman22 it's basically a bubblegum rock song.

  • sweet

  • This song was written by Adam Schlesinger from Fountains Of Wayne for the movie "That Thing You Do." The Knack then covered it as a bonus track on one of their greatest hits packages.

  • nice song :)

  • Im so gonna cover this. Love the drive and its just a great upbeat song

  • great cover, great 1960's feel song. the Knack like the Raspberries a decade before

paid great respect to what came before in the greatest decade of music the 1960"s

  • La cancion original. ... que buena honda...

  • how can someone not like this song?!?

  • song beatle !!!

  • probably the best version of the song.

  • @ShlomoGoldnagel

    definately

  • Is it me, or does this sound EXACTLY like the Beatles?

  • @harpo103 it's you

  • RIP Doug.......died on Valentines Day 2010. Really miss his songs...all his albums were A+....from "My Sharona" to "Les Girls"

  • @SoulKissin Related to Geoffry the attorney...Odd huh?

  • Fantastic.

  • R.I.P. Doug. Soundtrack of my youth.

  • this number is cover by oneders?

    but very good.

  • I don't know why I'm so pensive on this but - when you look at the obituaries of both Bruch Gary and Doug Fieger they apparently died unmarried, with no survivors. I hope that's how they wanted it - it just really gets to me how these two guys who made so many Knack songs about romance went into eternity as single men.

  • @ATamandua I hate gossiping about dead heroes of mine, but there is speculation that Doug never got over Sharona after they broke up. She sells real estate in L.A. now.

  • @SconeMason SconeMason, thanks. I remember a (People?) magazine story on her with a photo of her lounging upside-down and barefoot on a couch after she was identified as "the" Sharona. Another "Behind the music" type tale.

  • I had no idea they did a cover of this! RIP Doug :-(

  • I think it IS The Knack.

  • RIP DOUG!!!!!!!!

  • News came in today-Doug Fiegler, RIP

  • Ok guys, The song is from the the movie "That Thing You Do". The song is originally sung by Fountains of Wayne. (Stacy's Mom) and I'm really skeptical that this is a cover by the Knack. It sounds nothing like them . Doug Fieger has a distinctive style and voice and I don't hear any of him in the vocals. Just saying.....

  • Yes, it was written by Adam Schlesigner, but this is the Knack's version. It is on Proof: The Very Best Of The Knack.

I like this better since it is tinnier and fits the sound of the time in which the movie was to have taken place.

  • As much as nothing beats the original, this is still a great cover. You mentioned about the sound quality of the recording. The mixing of this record is more akin to a typical '60s record. The mix of Bob Clearmountain of the Wonders' original sounds too sophisticated and somehow sounds '90s. If this was recorded in the sixties, hard panning is usually done. Not so with the Wonders'. But this is no disrespect to Bob Clearmountain.

  • Great Tom Hanks movie: "That Thing You Do!" sung by the Wonders, same as the song title.

According to Wikipedia, Viola, along with friend Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne, co-produced the title track for Tom Hanks's 1996 movie That Thing You Do! The selection received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song. Viola sang lead vocals on the track, and as the accepted singing voice of Johnathon Schaech's character, "Jimmy," he also sang on the film's track "Little Wild One."

  • @parker133759 I agree !

  • Knack cover..RIP Doug..you will be missed.

  • This is the knack's cover version.

  • @SoulKissin yea and the band the wonderers weren't even tat famous so it isn't like it matters

  • @nre1994 THE 1DERERS....its backup name..hahaha.. great song..

  • @luisonlinemarch yea very good

  • @SoulKissin

but it's not on "get the knack" :)

  • @tootone73

the movie is called that thing you do. but it isnt the wonders singing either....

  • @tootone73 it's the wonders silly. even though this comment was a year ago.

  • @tootone73 OMG!The Beatles! TheKnack covered this song in 1980 & it was then used for the movie "The Wonders",Tom Hanks directorial debut. It was about a FICTICIOUS band called "The Wonders" in the music biz of the early-mid 60's.The movie was made in 1999,19yrs.after the Knack covered it & over 30yrs.after the Beatles.

  • @apokryphos117g The movie was made in 1995 and released in 1996. The Knack's cover is from 1998, not 1980.

The song is of a certain style of some pop music of the mid-60s, including some songs by the Beatles, but the Beatles never had anything to do with it. It and every other song in the movie was written specifically for the movie.

  • @kqr573v2 I never said the Beatles did,I did however think The Knack did it.I had know idea The Knack did anything in '98.How did that come about and are they still together?Did they tour in '98or what?1998 my sick yr.

  • @tootone73 for one the movie is the that thing you do but the knacks wrote the song and tom hanks wrote a story and put another band with the song and so he basically stole their song

  • @madvisme Wrong on so many levels.

The song was written specifically for the movie as a "creative exercise" by Adam Schlesinger of the group Fountains of Wayne. He was surprised when it was not only picked to be included in the movie, it became the song chosen as The Wonders "breakthrough" piece. After several "working titles" were considered for the movie, it ended up being named after the song.

The Knack's cover version was from 1998, two years after the movie was released.

  • This band was one of the greatest of ALL TIME..!!!! love them

  • hmm...this song was in a film with Tom Hanks, does it have a connection?

  • yeah i love that movie its awsome!!!!!! guy patterson is awsome at drums in that movie

  • "That thing you do" played by the wonders. its a class film.

  • dunno...if you find out LET ME KNOW!!!!!!

  • knack=tightest rock band ever

  • Decent cover as far as vocals, but the music is dead-on amazing.
