I LOVED this video, and needed it!!!! I gotta get me a darn tripod lol. Im so sick of staking palettes under my camera. Dumb question.. but how are you looking at what your recording on your computer? Do you just hook it with the USB cord? I have an HP laptop and a Kodak easy share camera.. THANKS :)
OMG!! thank you; thank you, I'm new to YT & new to making videos you're an angel sent to answer my questions.I now understand what I was doing wrong, I have some other questions to ask I'll e-mail U..Now I'm going to look @ you're advice on digital cam's.
I think these are really good tips and advice. However, I enjoy seeing the little non-"perfect" things about people. I like actually getting to see the "flaws" that I am being taught how to hide. It brings these beautiful women and girls down to a more human level, if you will. Even though I'm not found of zits, facial hair, warts, etc I think it unites us when we get glimpses into other people's lives and see that we all have to same crap to deal with. Ok, I'm off my cheesy, cliche soap box!
ahh this video was EXACTLY what i was looking for just one unresolved question.....when your applying the makeup especially if you want to be zoomed in while applying it, how do you know if your in the video frame? like do you have a mirror behind the camera to see? and even if so i find myself looking stupid trying to look back and forth
I use a digital camcorder that has a little view finder thing that flips out to the side & can be turned to face forwards or backwards. Also, when recording directly to the computer, you should see the live video on the monitor as it records.
If you're using a point & shoot camera & record to the camera's memory first, I can't really help with that! Sorry!
Well the lighting in your video does look really great. And your hair, too. I agree with you, that's a great color. I don't know why everyone is being all pissy about the camera angle thing. I have a fat face, that angle is totally necessary for pictures and ESPECIALLY videos.
I do makeup for photo shoots all the time and contouring and camera angles are key. It's all about the illusion; why do you think so many ads are airbrushed and color retouched before printing?
LOL you're seriously the funniest guru here on youtube. SERIOUSLY. LOL. You had me cracking up real bad just now. Haha. WTF, I share the same pet peeves as you too!
LOL I was just waiting for the hate comments to come rolling in.
I'm not hating against "fat" people. I'm pretty fucking fat myself, you just don't get to see anything below my neck. But hey, if you want to use the most unflattering angles, that's your prerogative.
I'm not FAKE, so sorry no charm here. Plenty of others out there who will cater to that.
Why so goaded about talk of unflattering camera angles? If I had said super curvy girl should avoid taper leg jeans because it's very unflattering, would you be upset?
What If i'd said foundation lines around the face are unflattering? Or that certain eye shapes should wear certain styles of shadow, because others are unflattering? Or super thick black liner under the lower lash line is unflattering?
The point of being a "beauty guru" on here is to share tips & tricks to help improve one's appearance. I'm not perfect by ANY means, nor do I think I am.
If I suggest a different camera angle to give someone a more flattering shot, what's wrong with that?
Is everyone offended because I suggested that they need to keep up with their eye brow hygiene?
LMFAO, "who wants to look up somebodies fucking nose?"
ok- I so needed this advice. Because my face is huge and I have done some vids and my nose was all up in there and I ended up deleting that shit. Gonna do one tomorrow, hope I can set it up well & you won't shut it off and scream at me from the other end :D Thanks Aprille, you rock!!!
This was great! I need to try and do the angle thing. I fully agree with you on the eyebrow upkeep. I will not make any tuts if my brows are crazy, HELLO NO, it's nasty, same with pic. If my brows are grown out then all you will see are reviews etc LOL.
I have a full spectrum lamp but it always washes me out. I'm going to try and place it like yours. :)
You might be washed out because your hair is so dark. I think I've had that issue where everything around me is dark, then my face is pale, and it just films odd.
Another thing I've heard you can try (which I do) if you seem to have odd colored skin from the lighting is load a background image on your monitor that's the contrasting color. If your skin looks bluish, load an orange background to balance out the color. Of course this only works if you're filming directly in front of the computer!
The lighting seems to work best for me when placed above & behind the camera.
Perhaps you can hang some colored pieces of fabrics on the wall next to you, to help balance out the wall color. Or you might be getting too much light reflecting off the walls, too, so some sort of fabric might help soften that. I saw you hung one behind you, maybe experiment with a different color for that.
Awesome advice, you could add please don't sniff the whole way through your videos please, you'd have touched on all of my bugbears :) Thank you for this video
Thanks for the tips! And eyebrow stuble is not a nice sight. Also I hate it when some girls put music in their tutorials. Most of the music is very annoying, or else its too loud. And yes, looking up someones nose, is not pleasent. Love your vids!
Thank you a lot. In fact I have put away my videos yestarday becouse it make me upset doing them and I could'nt see the colours of the make up. I was always wondering how people on youtube make so wonderful videos. You are so kind as always
ahah i love your bitchiness. You're one of my fav gurus because you cut the crap and tell everyone what you think (besides the awsome tutorials obviously lol)!
Hey I have a question about brows, LOL...I tweeze mine and idk, I guess I'm using shitty tweezers or something becuz evertyime I go to pull out a hair, I can hear the hair break instead of it pulling out. Such a nice sensation when u grab a hair and it comes out fully from the root! LOL But anyway, these tweezers seem to break the hair and I get these nasty little black dots that i cant seem to get ahold of and pluck out. Any tips on getting rid of them and what tweezers do u recomend? thanks!
revlon makes a great pair of tweezers - can't remember make. it's burgundy with really narrow/sharp tips. the narrower the tip, usually grabs hair better.the revlon ones will probably set you back $15 or so, but worth it. it'll grab your broken hairs too.
Maybe you just have super strong hair follicles! ;) I have a little black pair of tweezers from Revlon. I've had them for years, but I think i just picked them up at walmart or target. Nothing fancy. They are angled & kind of heavy-duty.
I've seem some crappy tweezers where if you pinch them too tight the tips, instead of grasping tighter, spread OPEN, because of the pressure where you squeeze together (if that makes ANY sense!) So by squeezing them tighter they utterly fail to grasp the hair.
Oh man, not plucking your eyebrows when you're going to put yourself on video and probably take macro pictures of your eyeball KILLS ME! If you're going to take the time to put on makeup in the first place, you can at least make the effort to get rid of scraggly ass hairs!! Yay for you saying that!
love this video! Great lighting! I especially love the bit about taking care of your brows... isn't that the truth! Great set up and thanks so much for sharing this!
I don't feel any heat from them actually. They don't get any hotter than the normal bulb lamps i used to use. And I only have them turned on for about 30 minutes - just long enough to record & edit videos. There have been times I've left them on for several hours, but again, no significant heat output. They are under 30 watts each, so maybe that's why. I don't know enough about wattage to say. LOL
LOL! Great video. Camera angles are very important, I'm glad someone finally said something. I thought I was being a bitch when I'd frown on the unibrow shots but it is nice to know that someone else gets turned off from that, too.. hahaha
wow the lighting is great now, I need a full spectrum lamp. I must say Im one of those offenders with the eyebrows. I will say this, I get them waxed and I have to let it grow out somewhat so they can wax them again, so at the end of the time just before I go in they are going to look shabby lol Thanks for telling us about your lighting! I will love watching you even more now =)
Thanks girl! These full spectrum lamps kick ass! A MUST for makeup videos!
LOL I understand about the waxing & needing them to grow out for it. Still drives me crazy ;) But I totally understand! hehe Now let's see how many people I have offended.. hehe Speaking your mind isn't always a good thing.
I know it goes against the whole point of the make-up... like the hair and the blackheads and shit lol

i've always heard that the 'up' angle is called the FGA - or fat girl angle or myspace angle.
also - i disagree that a skinny face is a 'perfect' face. i have a pretty chubby face and i'm not ashamed to show my chin :)
