Thank you to ALL Libera boys for this song, personally I think this song does a very good job demonstrating the kind of music you do, and to me this is the best of all your songs to date!
Te lucis ante terminum rerum Creator poscimus ut solita clementia sis praesul ad costodium
Before the ending of the day Creator of the world we pray that with Thy wanton favour Thou would be our Guard and Keeper now
Keep me as the apple of Thine, hide me under the shadow of Thy wings, keep me as the apple of Thine eye, Hide me, hide me, hide me...hide me, hide me, hide me...
LIBERA has become a phenomenon of unusual proportion. I have never seen nor heard so many posative words preached on behalf of any single singing group in my 48 years of life as i have of LIBERA. I have listened to them,I have read about them, I have seen them preform. It is an experience you do not forget. These are absolutely GOD gifted beings and we have been blessed to have them. Thank you guys! Thank you so very much!
A note on pronunciation: unlike many people think, "Luchis" is totally correct "church Latin" as opposed to Classical Latin, an older and more "refined" variety of the language. Classical Latin was the variety of great writers like Cicero and Virgilio. "Church Latin" was pretty resemblant to the common everyday Latin of the people, to whom the church intended to reach with its sermons. So, we have "Lukis" Classical Latin; and "Luchis" vulgar (meaning of the Vulgo, the people) and church Latin.
Yeah, my friends who take Latin have been correcting me on that..they think they know everything! Like, Cara says "amici" "amiki" but I say it "amichi" I think the Church Latin pronunciation sounds prettier.
it just depends on what the text is... if it is meant to be ecclesiastical latin or classical latin. On top of this, there is some difference in the way you pronounce latin when it is sung
The question about Steven brings up a good point. What do the boys do after their voice breaks? They are so involved for much of their childhood do they find it hard to move on? Do many stay on in "supporting" roles? Have any begun a singing career "post-Libera". They are one of the most phenomenal collections of talent ever and I would love to see/hear where they go as they mature and spread their wings on their own. To whomever started it (Mr. Prizeman?); thank you sooooo much.
Gosh, you bring up so many good questions its hard to know where to begin. I'd say it depends on the individual. Some, like Steven's brother, become involved in other things (in Daren's case he built race cars in University). Some become less involved in Libera, but continue on musically. Liam O'Kane is part of a ska-punk band that have seen airplay on BBC 1. Joe Platt is a drummer, and Chris Robson is a guitarist and singer for his band.
"The Trio" of Ben Crawley, Steven and Sam Coates are still in University, but I expect especially great things from them. Ben is reading for a degree in music and sings as a wonderful tenor. Sam is a jazz pianist and sings bass. Steven plays multiple instruments, sings countertenor, and composed a piece, "Never Be Alone," for the most recent Libera album. With another friend they formed their own group, Fronting Vocals.
Thank you very much for your reply. You seem to be well connected to the Libera crew. I was a fan of Anthony Way years ago when he debuted on "The Choir" and bought his later albums. His singing is what began my interest in treble choirs. It was his maturing and trying to make it in the music world that brought up my questions. You can hear him on myspace. It is a shame that the treble choirs don't get the appreciation here in the US that they do in the UK. maybe Libera can help change that.
I wonder, why can't they do what Der Tolzer Knabenchor does? why can't Steven, Ben, and Sam sing ON STAGE with the rest of them and maybe ocasional sing a duet with one of soloists? like in Jesu meine Freude, they have 2 sopranos and a tenor...why can't they do something like that? they don't have to do ALOT of stuff like that, but it would be nice to see the older ones on stage again instead of lowering them to the satus of "Session Assistent" or "Co-Proucer"
I do agree, even though I absolutly love the newest and remaining young members like Tom, Josh, Ben, Ed, Liam, heck all of em.. I sure miss Ben and Steven and Sam. I would love to see them sing, they still have amazing talent! A duet would be so awsome.. also, I mentioned in a previous post. I wish there was a High Rez DVD with all these "music videos" on it..I'd always watch it!
O yes! That would be sooo awesome!!!!!! In fact, just the other day I said to my sister Rose "wouldn't it be awesome if Libera came out with a DVD of all their music videos EVER?" and she said, "O! That would be sweet!"
I think that would be cool too, but I don't think that "session assistant" or "co-producer" is lowered. If anything those jobs are harder and reflect the fact that they have indeed grown up. They also still sing, I think, sometimes with the St.Phillip's choir.
Having been on both sides of the camera and microphone, I know that behind the scenes is hard work and not "lower" - if anything, it's more important.
It's not that I really think that being a session assistant or a co-producer is lowering...I just don't think they get enough recognition...when you go to a concert do you think "O! what magnificent lighting!" and "Whoever did the stage management did a marvelous job!" NO! You think "O! what wonderful singing! these boys are so talented!" and the people in the back are forgotten completely! All I'm saying is that I'd like them to sing, not just with St. Philips Choir, but with Libera as well.
oh my gosh! I realize this comment's 7 months old but I totally agree!! I would love to hear what the *older* boys-the old soloists sound like now, even just a few songs. just what i've been thinking too, Gabriellesuperiour. ;)
Me too!!!!! I LOVE Anthony, he was one of my favourites and I miss him soooo much!!!!!!!!
O! why did he have to leave! Does anybody know what he does now? please don't say he's in a band! it would break my heart to hear that he was in a band!
Steven is still active in the choir as a keyboardist and he helps train the younger boys! I believe he also helps sing the lower parts in certain songs, but I'm not sure!
The heaven soars with voices above The skies resound the power of your love The stars shine out your glorious light Shine through our gloom and take us on high Keep me as the apple of an eye Hide me under the shadow of thy wings Keep me as the apple of an eye Hide me, hide me, hide me Sancto Spiritu, rerum Creator Sancto Spiritu Sancto, Sancto Spiritu Te lucis ante terminum
Te lucis ante terminum Rerum creator poscimus Ut solita clementia Sis praesul ad custodium Before the ending of the day Creator of the world we pray That with thy wonted favour thou Would be our guard and keeper now Keep me as the apple of an eye Hide me under the shadow of thy wings Keep me as the apple of an eye Hide me, hide me, hide me Hide me, hide me, hide me
I think you are right Jemimasim. I have a feeling that Steven's voice didn't have a major break, and he was able to compensate for it's lowering at first by using other techniques like falsetto. He can still sing quite high; even now he has a great countertenor ("...and then we've got Steven, who can sing high, 'For a Guy!'") as demonstrated with Fronting Vocals. He did "Ave Maria" when he was around 14, I believe, so that may have been the time of voice change.
Only it has THE CHOIR on top of the music.......TERRIFIC..!!

"Keep me as the Apple of Thine eye" and "hide me under the shadow of Thy wings" remind me of Deuteronomy 32:10-11.
