  • what year was the fly-off?...how Ironic, I wonder if this was the only example of a fly off where both planes (Eventually) won?

  • what show is this from

  • @rahulkapoor4 Great Planes

  • General Dyn bought by Lockheed, Northrop was bought by Mcdonnel, Mcdonnel was bought by Boeing, and soon, Boeing will be bought by Lockheed... And next time Lockheed will be bought by Chengdu. Chinese Wins!!

  • @engeng1234 Sorry won't happen.

  • hahah its always so funny .. americans say russia copies their designs while the f-18 is based on mig-25... lol

  • @SMJeOma Mig-25? it looks nothing like the Mig-25. the Mig-25 was a huge unmanuverable stainless steel monstrosity with large engines designed for cruise missiles that had little range, no engine life, poor radar, & has proven to be utterly defenseless in combat. if you mean the Mig-29 then I suppose you could say that is true in that they both have 2 wings, double tails, & jet engines. but if you look at Mig-29 & F/A-18 close up you'll see they are quite different.

  • @kdraper2007 ur blind? we are talking about lookings and u say unmanuveralbe stainless steel monstrosity. wth? if u see the mig 25 and then the f-17 u see almost no diffences and as u know the f18 comes from f17 prototype. Alse the f17 was developed if im right to beat new russian aircraft as mig 25 and more. i know the mig 29 and no not the mig 29

  • @kdraper2007 actually, if you look at the MiG-29 and the YF-17 you will find there are remarkable similarities between the two airframes, especially in the LERX design.

  • @SMJeOma you seem to be mistaken, the only aircraft we have that looks even remotely similar to the MiG-25 is the F-15, and that is mostly due to similar intake designs.

  • Funny how it was General Dynamics and Northrup who were in the competition, and now its Lockheed and Boeing who make the aircraft.

  • @NWguy83 lockheed bought General Dynamics & Northrup was bought by McDonnell Douglas which was later bought by Boeing.

  • is it true that the F-18 can dogfight even with a full bomb load?

  • sucks the F-35 is suppost to replace the hornet it still seems new

  • To clear this up, YF-16 and 17 were in competition, F-16 won and is still in service, The never liked the YF-17 better and changed a few things and made it carrier able and replaced the F-4s A-4s A-7s with the F/A-18 Then in the 90's it was decided to make a new version of the hornet to replace the F-14, A-6, EA-6b KA-6D, and S-3

come on spend 30 seconds on google guys

  • the F/A-18 is in prodution still right?

  • The F/A 18 Super Hornet (E/F) has been in production ever since 2000 (if not '99)

    The C/D Hornet is not.

It was the Super Hornet that replaced the F-14's due to the cancelation of the E series Cat.

  • yeah cuz that plane its a very good plane and its armed to his teeth!

  • @untensil : Only the Super Hornet.

  • @untensil the super hornet is at ST louis's airport.

  • he looks like the F/A 18 hornet because it is the prototype of him ^^

  • how old is this? this plane looks a lot like the F18

  • 1974

  • The F-18 was developed from the YF-17. The YF-17 lost to the YF-16 during the Lightweight Fighter Program during the 60's 70's or 80's (can't remember exactly when.) After losing the Navy took the idea of the YF-17 and created the F-18 to replace the aging F-14 fleets.

  • No, they didnt make F-18 to replace F-14. They made Super Hornet for that. The original Hornet and Tomcat flew at same time. Super Hornet is Replacement for the Tomcat due to operational costs and engine problems

  • @polishkilla94 it is a F-18 before MD took the design and improved it.

  • @polishkilla94 This aircraft was the forerunner of the F/A-18. it lost the U.S. air force lightweight fighter competition to the YF-16. the Navy liked the YF-17 better so northrup teamed up with Mcdonald douglass (who had a lot of naval aircraft experience) to produce the F/A-18. the origanal plan was to produce a bomber version-A-18 & a fighter version-F-18. but the technology evolved so fast they were able to give a single airframe the capabilities of both with little effect on proformence.

  • @polishkilla94 After the F-17 Cobra lost to the F-16 Falcon during the tests the company that created the F-17 begun to upgrade the design with larger air frame, stronger engines and upgrades. If you watch Great Planes episode F-18 it covers the origins of both the F-17 & F-18.

  • @polishkilla94 it was designed to compete with the f-16, the f-16 won and the plane was ditched, later on they wanted a plane smaller than an f-15 to do the same roles so McDonald Douglas used the design of the Northrop yf-17 and made the f-18.

  • excelente video, primero que encuentro en youtube del YF 17. Buen aporte

    nice fighter aircraft
