He was not allowed to use any type of wrestling or submission holds against Ali. He was not allowed to kick Ali from a standing position. @MrKlp2010 This is why wrestlers don't box, and boxers don't wrestle. Since there was curiousity about "which was better" we now have MMA which has combined the two sports (plus others). In a plain old street fight, MMA guys are the most dangerous - because that's essentially what they are training for. Wrestling, boxing have confining rules. They are not martial arts in the strictest sense of that term.
Guys like James Toney and Ali have a hard time fighting outside of boxing matches as their highly skilled defensive techniques are suited only for countering punching. To be a boxer in mma or other combat sports I would think you would have to be a 'puncher' like rampage rather than a counter puncher. Otherwise you can't close the distance. Also, Ali's gloves put him at a disadvantage in this fight as he cant grab and it reduces his power (which may or may not have changed this fight).

@d0ctorgrany You do realize that Ali instigated rules where Inoki was NOT allowed to grab him. Which is why Inoki couldn't. Inoki was allowed to punch or kick and if he kicked it was only while he had kneeling or lower. The rules were to make it to where Inoki would lose. Even with these rules, Inoki shattered Ali's legs and put him in the HOSPITAL. A smaller guy, with rules against him put the 'GREATEST' in the hospital

@jimmychuang if it's a real fight with no rules, why would ali box? ali would kick too, he'd wrestle, he wouldn't wear gloves. if it had no rules, ali would have been trained in wrestling and kicking and boxing in that fight. if it wasn't rules restrict, he wouldn't stay on the ground, but when he stands up, he's going right back down to the floor except he'll go down bleeding and unconcious. in a real fight, you forget that boxers aren't boxers anymore they become street fighters.

I just read a little about this on wiki and checked it out, but when I seen it I found it weird that Ali wore Boing gloves and Inoki had wrestling gear on...I found it puzzling, I thought that Inoki was stalling the whole fight by doing that, but I then found out he was allowed to do that

the reason inoki had to do this tactic was because before the fight in a public training session alis people found out that he was a legit fighter ie stiff worker so they made these rules that inoki couldnt use almost all of his movesets and ali and his team said that unless they complied with these rules that they were going back to america so thats why the match was shitty if antonio couldve used his moves ali wouldve been beat up

According to their pre-fight rules, Inoki was not allowed to grab Ali in any way. He was not allowed to punch/hit Ali in any way. He was not allowed to use any type of wrestling or submission holds against Ali. He was not allowed to kick Ali from a standing position. The ONLY offensive move not specifically forbidden for Inoki to use was to lay on his back and kick at Ali.

Antonio Inoki was forbidden to stand kick, body-slam or do almost any of the moves a wrestler can, so all he could do was slide and kick from that position.

one of the most unfair fight i've ever seen, the pro wrestler had a military style boots on which is really hard at the tip and it can break anyone's legs plus the other guy spent most of the time on the ground too scared to fight the conventional standing up way like a true man, he should not consider that a victory

@MrKlp2010 This is why wrestlers don't box, and boxers don't wrestle. Since there was curiousity about "which was better" we now have MMA which has combined the two sports (plus others). In a plain old street fight, MMA guys are the most dangerous - because that's essentially what they are training for. Wrestling, boxing have confining rules. They are not martial arts in the strictest sense of that term.

Guys like James Toney and Ali have a hard time fighting outside of boxing matches as their highly skilled defensive techniques are suited only for countering punching. To be a boxer in mma or other combat sports I would think you would have to be a 'puncher' like rampage rather than a counter puncher. Otherwise you can't close the distance. Also, Ali's gloves put him at a disadvantage in this fight as he cant grab and it reduces his power (which may or may not have changed this fight).
