just dindnt like the front atack first the dog runs away from the decoy's treth for this you need some good knpv dogs not a stupid german shepherd not a very good dog see my movies there you see some good dogs
At the K-9 police trial there were a lot of Malinois competing. They did very well. They are good looking dogs and probably more suited to police work than the Tervuren because of their build. Tervuren seem to be very good as search and rescue dogs. Are Malinois used for police work in Belgium?
@jaggertje In the 2010 Desert Dog trials there seemed to have been a lot more German Shepherds than in the past few years. Maybe they're making a come back in police work?
I see you are from Belgium. Are you familiar with the Belgian Tervuren breed? I recently had the pleasure to see two Tervuren search and rescue dogs. They were very smart and very nice dogs.
dogsub thanks for letting me know you posted that video. It's awesome! We weren't there on Saturday so I was glad to see what some of those events were about. Your dog is amazing.
dogsubx2,I haven't noticed that she goes to the bathroom less. Then again there's not much to clean up anyway...she's a 3-lb Teacup Chihuahua! (Stop laughing!) She's tiny, but what she lacks in size she makes up in attitude :)
rocker, are you using the innova evo or the cannidae? if you're using the cannidae, you won't notice the poop difference because you're still feeding the same amount. with the evo you feed the dog less because the protein content is so high (42%). less food = less poop.
dogsub- I see you like to talk shit(haha)! I feed her the Innova Evo, 1/4c a day (I give her half of that @ breakfast and the rest @ dinner). I was giving her 2X as much Purina, and she would eat it all &look @ me like she's still hungry. It takes her longer to finish the Evo, so it must be the protein that makes it more filling. She does like it better &so does my cat (she gets the Innova Evo cat food)
dogsubx2: Thank you for recommending that Innova pet food to my Mom. She called me and told me about it, so that's the brand I now feed my dog and cat and they both love it! You should be a sales rep for that company ;) By the way, you and your dog did great, but Holly is still my favorite dog I saw that day!
glad your pets like it rocker. one of the things i like about it is you don't have to feed the dog as much, so that means less poop to clean. mipian, my first dog died from an intestinal disease, my second in a training accident (jumped off roof)...
dogsub I'm really sorry to hear about your other dogs. It's so heartbreaking to lose them regardless of the circumstances.
rocker is right, you should be a sales rep for Innova. It looks like you have 3 conversions right here. I'm now feeding it to my dog for one meal a day and cooking for her for the other. My cat is being switched to it as well.
dogsubx2 - I might as well admit to jumping on your dog food bandwagon. My Chihuahua is now eating Canidae, along with home cooking. To avoid confusion, I am not RockerChick's mom:) I'm her aunt:)
Thanks sillyfurby! Mom told me about the food so I thought she was the one who got that msg. I guess I should actually READ the posts before I comment :)
sillyfurby you touched a nerve with me when you brought up commercial dog food. I used to feed my dog Nutro and was livid when I found some of it's products were on the recall list. Now I home cook for my dog and I know the meat I am feeding her is really human quality meat. And as a nice bonus, she has no more doggie odor. The US is killing itself with all this unnecessary outsourcing.
there is no room for thinking when given the command to bite. officers lives, civilian lives, and civil liability are all in mind in a decision to have the dog apprehend someone. i want the human part of the team making those decisions, not the dog. you call it thinking the judges and knowledgeable dog people call it lack of courage. in a trial, both the handler and the dog are judged, so while yes the dog obeyed on the early call off (good thing), the team was docked points for the infraction.
Now I understand, you "splained" very well. I'm glad my dog isn't a police dog, I'd rather he be allowed to think before reacting. Although that may never happen since Chihuahuas are not as short on courage as they are in height. He'd be better off sticking to staring in his YouTube Videos.
You may refer to it as "lack of courage" but I refer to it as intelligence, something which cannot be taught. Holly clearly assessed the situation and went in for the bite. In the field handlers are not always able to see what their K-9 faces when they are sent into a situation. In one scenario it might work out best if a dog does exactly what is commanded of him. In a different situation a dog that uses some logic of it's own might have a better outcome for all.
Case in point is a dog that was chasing a suspect who jumped 30 feet from an overpass. The K-9 followed and broke his back and was euthanized. The suspect got away. A dog like Holly may very well have assessed the situation and not made that fatal jump. In a competition following commands may be what it's all about but in the field a dog that does not think but only follows commands may not always be the best dog for a particular situation.
first of all, the dog did not go in for the bite. the dog does not bite until the decoy stops spraying the water and turns and runs. you are right that the dog does assess the situation and comes to the conclusion that "i don't want any part of this". this is due to one thing. lack of courage. the bottom line is that the dog is disposable. their purpose is to limit police officers exposure to danger.
While we disagree on this particular dog we certainly agree that while it can be a crappy deal for the dog, their purpose is to cover for their human partner. Sadly too many of both human and K-9 officers lose their lives in the line of duty. Even one loss is too many.
just so we're clear here. yes, we disagree. i do this for a living, was there, and competed in the trial. i consider my opinion an informed one. is yours?
Compared to somebody that 'does this for a living' I guess not. It's just my 'uniformed' opinion. I think in this country we still have a right to those, or maybe not anymore? ;) So how did your dog do?
A few trophies?! I would say that's very good. He must be an exceptional dog. No wonder you agree with these judges. LOL Is he a Belgian Malinois? Pretty dogs but they all look alike. LOL
And as far as opinions go, you know the saying, they're like bellybuttons and assholes, everybody has one. And judges, although 'in the know' don't always agree with one another either. That's why there is more than one judge.
he's a dutch shepherd. keep in mind, i'm not bashing this dog. i'm sure it does well in other areas. i believe she won a trophy for narcotics, but the fact is, the dog lacks courage...
HA! Well I can see we will never agree on Holly. LOL You will always say she lacks courage and I will always say she is courageous and she is a thinking dog! And no, I don't feel like you are bashing her. ; )
Dutch Shepherds are very pretty dogs too. I don't know much about them other than that. Was your dog in the Tough Dog competition?
yes, he made the tough dog competition, but he did not win it. i think he mistimed his jump. i was happy that we made the cut to be selected for the competition. they put on a great trial down there.
Just out of curiosity, are you feeding your dog commercial pet food? From what I've been researching, there's some nasty stuff in it. Roadkill, euthanized dogs and cats, their collars, shoe leather, to name a few gross ingredients. Remember creosote, the wood preservative? It was ban from being used on telephone poles. Now it is being used to preserve meat that goes into pet foods. Yummy!
Your dog isn't the dog that fell in the dirt is he? Probably not because I think that was a Malinois. That dog looked like he hit really hard then he got right up and went after the agitator. I felt bad for that dog! But I guess he was okay since he got up so quickly. That's a fun competition to watch. Those dogs love to bite!
no, my dog didn't fall in the dirt. i feed my dog innova evo. it's a high quality kibble. i used to feed nutro which is good. cannidae is better and i think the evo is just about the best. lots of meat. no grains.
dogsubx2 how are the top teams determined? I was checking out the standings and noticed it doesn't appear to necessarily go to the team with the most wins.
they just add up the points from all of the events. some of the events were worth more points than others. so if a team did really well in three events, but blew the other two, a team that didn't place in any specific category could pass them for overall standings.
Oh, I put up two videos of the Tough Dog competition. I linked them here. Your boy should be in one or the other of them. The angle isn't the greatest but at least it's something.
Well dogsub you and the other handlers and K-9s put on the show, all I did was video it. So thank you and the rest for participating and doing a great job. I hope they have it in Scottsdale again next year.
Your pup must be either the first or second dog in part 2. They both looked like they got a good bite on the agitator.
yes, mine is the second. i would assume they will have it in scottsdale. last year it was in mesa, but that was because the scottsdale stadium wasn't available for some reason. it's a great trial and my friends and i plan on making the long trip again next year.
I just checked out the standings and you and Camo did very well. How long have you had him? How do they "fit" the dog to the handler? Do they take personalities into account like they do for seeing eye dogs?
we've been together about a year and a half (nov '05). personality of the dog/handler is taken into account when selecting a dog. usually it's the head trainer who makes the decision, unless it's an experienced handler, who will then have more say.
I remember a real tear jerker of a story I read a couple of years ago that appeared in the AZ Highway Patrol magazine. To make a long story short, the K-9 officer's dog was retired. The officer said he always considered the dog more of a tool of the trade rather than a partner and friend. The officer was beginning to change his mind and start to really care about the K-9 and went out to get him a doghouse. Sadly when he came back home he found the dog had died. : ( It was so sad.
while the judges already did their "splainin" on the score sheets, perhaps i can shed some light. the dog probably lost anywhere from 15 to 20 points for avoidance on the courage test. it also looked like you called the dog off a bit early and might have lost points there as well...
"it also looked like you called the dog off " It isn't my dog. Although I would be proud to have her. But then I'm not a cop so that would never happen. I don't know the handler or the dog. Do you honestly think the handler would have put up this video? I think by not heading straight into the water it showed she was thinking. I guess it takes a female to do that.
There's a difference between "careless-jump-in-fire" courage, and "contemplating" courage. I see Holly as a reasoning canine. This is good, she'll be less likely to get herself killed that way. As for being called off "a bit early", if that was the case, at least she obeyed. That is another thing that will help keep her from getting killed on the job.
Unfortunately she didn't win the competition. In fact, she didn't even place. She was awesome though and I think the judges have some 'splainin' to do.
I think those judges suck-I can't imagine a dog doing better than her! She did perfect, from what I could tell. All those police dogs are amazing to watch though...They have to be so smart to do all that!

i have one to but mine is just a house pet
wich is very active and keep me in shape
if you now what i mean
long walks and runs isn't a problem for her
and i trained her myself
i never went to school with her
but i think that the tervuren is related to the malinois

There are Four Belgian breeds. The Tervuren, Malinois, Laeknois and something which I think it is a Groendale (sp?).
