  • Tolkien was a devout Catholic, not Christian. If he had been a devout Christian, he would have been overjoyed at his friend, Lewis's, salvation instead of being peeved at his not joining the Catholic church. The Catholic church is based on tradition, not the Bible.

  • @BooksandMoreMe This is random flamming on Tolkien. I think you are conflating several things. Its hard to say anything about how Tolkien felt about Lewis' conversion, but Lewis did do things to escalate the split between the 2 men by doing things like calling the Catholics "papists" which is supposedly more derogatory. Read letter 113 To C.S. Lewis of Tolkien's letters. Tolkien seems fine with Lewis being Christian but not Catholic, but I could be wrong.

  • @ogf295 My statement is not against Tolkien, but Catholicism. I believe in the absolute authority of the inspired Word of God, the Bible. If you have read the Bible and studied Catholic beliefs, you cannot fail to see the differences between them. If you have reasonable evidence that Tolkien was a born again believer, then I am heartily glad; I cannot stand the thought of any entering judgement.

  • @BooksandMoreMe Was Tolkien unchristian? Catholics are told to spread "the truth." If Tolkien felt that he had failed to lead his friend to salvation by bringing him to Catholicism, might he be frustrated? As for Catholicism, I understand let's base everything on the Bible so we know everything is right, but it can be reasonable to think that not everything is in the Bible. For example, which books should constitute the Bible. But I am sure you know all about sola scriptura.

  • @ogf295 The beliefs of Catholicism have nothing to do with the total authority of Scripture. Many of the traditions held by the Catholic church (i.e. Mary did have children after Jesus, Peter did have a wife (For how else did he have a mother-in-law?) I do not say that no one who is Catholic is born again, but every born again believer I have known has said that it is nigh impossible to grow in the midst of Catholicism. A believer gets out of that situation A.S.A.P.

  • Actually Elbereth is more like an Archangel than a Goddess, but I usually prefer to think of Her as a Goddess. Remember that Tolkien was a very devout Christian after all. ^_^

  • Beautiful music and image in this hymn to the Elven Goddess
