  • And that Am blues pentatonic you played with the "blues note" as C# instead of D# for the shape you used AC, DE, GA, CD, EG, AC. It sounds good though but it's not quite Am blues scale....just for clarification.

  • A little confusing though because you went from A mixolydian to an Am pentatonic.

  • great work/... I've just uploaded a load of Mixolydian backing tracks... jam and learn!

  • not a bad lesson...

...for a guys whos water heater is in his living room...

  • Hey man, you do a great job at explaining. You should definitely do some more videos. Thanks!

  • When the student is ready the teacher arrives, Thanks

  • 5:18 wow this is really tasty hahaha ! Nice playing !

  • just learned how to use emphasis across the strings for playing rhythm. Thanks Marty

  • THis guy is high as ish right now...LOL

  • is this ur man cave?

  • Awesome lesson!

  • I was listening to Warren Haynes talking about combining Mixo and Pentatonic today. Killer lesson BTW. I'm still working on digging into the Garcia vibe with the Mixo. Love the Heritage as well. Awesoome guitar. Do you 'extend' this mixo form in any of your lessons. I'm trying to find those notes else where. Does that make sense?

  • marty, adopt me!

  • Finally! Modes I can actually use in my playing. Thanks. :)

  • Modes have been beating me down lately, especially when my instructor had me mixing the blues and mixolydian patterns- your video was dead on! Very helpful, thanks

  • very clear!! good lesson!

    Cheers from Argentina.

  • Hey Does any one know what pedal that is (he is using) that allows you to loop a riff and then play to it?

  • Thanks man, this was very helpful! Killer playing man

  • jesus christ! i've been listening to this concert of the dead from 66 or 68 i forget (winterland) this is exactly what jerry does!!!

  • d00d, ive never seen him without the hat

  • You are a great teacher: can you help my son with chemistry?

  • Damn this is helpful. Thank you!

  • Wow thanks! ive been on youtube for the past hour trying to figure out what exactly the mixolydian mode is and its use and your video finally explained it. i do have a question tho. does the scale in A only work over an A7 or will it work in a whole song in A. for example, in a blues standard (A7 - A7 - A7 - A7 - D7 - D7 - A7 - A7 - E7 - D7 - A7 - A7 repeat) will this mode work over the D7 and E7 in A?

  • mixolydian mode just has a b7, if it sounds good play it.

  • comment je suis fan de la télé qui a derriere lui...

  • thanks Marty. the modes take awhile to get my head around. knowing what mode works well over what chords etc...

  • So over an A7 chord you would play A mixolydian?

  • A mixolydian is where the A7 chord comes from, so yes! A mixolydian is also all the same notes as D major scale.

  • do you have the tab for that mixolydian scale? your lessons are fantastic!

  • I want you to be my neighbor!

My ears wud be pressed on the walls!

    keep em coming!

  • dude, what loop pedal did u use?

  • YES! What pedal please? Great lesson Marty. I really enjoyed it. I think you get a little busy showing off, but it all sounded good, and I'm sure its nothing you haven't heard before. Would love to Jam on Drums or Guitar with you anytime. Keep these great vids coming!

  • is not easy teach like that, thanks a lot, from Argentina.

  • Thanks a lot Marty!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thank you!

    Omid

  • just curious if you were formally trained or not?

not like it matters but the way you teach sounds like your relaying how it was taught to you....another words, your a good explainer.

  • I got a bachelor's in music from the college of santa fe. Learned a lot and had some great guitar teachers. I also took lessons with joe diorio who you should check out.

  • Thanks for all your help. Your videos are amazing. What is the advantage of holding the pick with your thumb and your middle finger(instead of the index finger) if i may ask?

  • Awesome lesson, I have been back to watch this video about 10 times so far to try and pick out some 'tasty' licks once I got the concept down. I did have one question- I notice that you accent some of the notes and it sounds like you are almost spanking the note, heh- can you explain more about accents and possibly do another follow up video on the same subject as this one with more of you just playing this mixolydian-blues combo and just talking about what you are doing? Thanks!! Eric

  • I think when I use my fingers I pluck it hard, I think that's what you are referring to.

  • I don't have the guitar here, so I'm not sure at 100%, but sounds like a blues scale with both 3° min and 3° maj.

Nice to combine with dominant pentatonic and so mixolidian.

    Nice phrasing! 5 stars

  • sleep well tonight knowing you really fuckin helped me! cheers!!

  • cool lesson and water heater lol

  • you're clearly a talanted guitarist and teacher... nicely introduced and building up to some really nice solos....! thx for this!

  • great lesson. you are a great teacher.

  • nasty fucking playing....you like derek trucks don't you?? lolol

and if not, than wow...listen to him bc you sound pretty fuckin close riffs

  • love him and met him, great humbe guy and absolutely incredible on that there geeetar. thanks for the kind words!!!

  • Stellar lesson man.

I should hace started with this one. I'm really looking to modal playing as a way to force myself out of pentatonic and blues scales. This is a great lesson to build that bridge. THANKS!

  • Marty, nice job, this should help many beginners, but also help more advance guitar players who may get caught in a cetain groove/pattern rut and need to go back to the basics.

  • Nice phrasing! Keep it up.

  • Great lesson. Keep them coming!

  • this was the most helpful thing ever

  • dude youv got styleeeeee ~(X

  • yo!!! thanks man!!!!!!

  • Nice playing, nice lesson.

  • Nice Bullshit-free lesson!!! Cool riffs too! Good to see someone putting the scales into practice rather than just showing boring formulas.

    Veks :0)

  • thanks broseph

  • thnks for posting, gr8 straight forward lesson

  • nice star wars things behind you

  • nice and simple full of useful tips. Thanx marty!

  • Great lesson, you should do more!

  • Great lesson !! how come your looping pedal doesn't delay like mine evry time the phrase starts over ?

  • boss rp-2?

  • Yep thats mine too, the Boss Rc-2 I must be doing something wrong because when the phrase I record finishes, there is a delay before the loop starts again.

  • wow I never thought I'd see someone post a guitar tutorial on youtube that wasn't a giant doochebag about it. Nice post. Good, straight forward lesson without all that nonsense and ego. Thanks! You'd make a great guitar instructor.

  • I appreciate that, thanks

  • amazing man very helpful

  • hey man, what amp were ya playin' through?

  • that was really useful thanks!

  • glad it helped!!!

  • You using a jam man? by digitech?

    Great work dude, very helpful.

    Keep it up.

    Rock on.

  • Your lessons are inspiring Marty. A good example of modal playing and how-to-do it in simple and expressive way. Never mind narrow headed people, if somebody finds these videos, why not spend time finding interesting things that appeal to him and instead criticize? Can't get it...

  • you are obviously too advanced for this to be helpful, maybe you can give me some lessons on how to be so awesome and exciting. thanks again for the feedback.

  • it's called a loop station. Boss makes one called RC-2 for a basic one... they're like 200$. Nice tutorial man, that helped me out tons!

  • really great stuff, Marty...i'm also curious what pedal you're using to loop with.

    keep it up!

  • good stuff !

  • Great work, very informative. What loop/delay pedal are you using?

  • i seriously spent 7 minutes on one note. why didn't you just explain that in 30secs.

  • thanks for the feedback!!!

  • What's the foot pedal you're using so that if you play something it repeats it?

  • This is one of the most useful YouTube videos I have seen!

  • Nice. Great treatment, well explained.

  • great :]
