This song gives me the chills. It's amazing. I saw Amy open for Brandi Carlile at Cat's Cradle and wow she was amazing. "She's Got To Be" was my favorite! She's amazing live...and seeing them front row was even better. :-) Amazing song!
Chelseagle...What does it matter whether Mathew Shepherd's killers were his drug dealers......homophobia is homophobia, and murder is MURDER, and Amy Ray is RIGHT ON THE MARK in her politics.
I understand there are good things happening in Laramie, question: Are they the results of Mathew Shepherd's death?

I'm from Laramie, and I find this song offensive.
I think it's unfortunate that Laramie is only known for the death of Mathew Shepard. Few also know that Laramie was the GSA capitol of Wyoming of the time, that the people who protested and held up signs of hate at Mathew Shepard's trial were from out of state, and Mathew's killers were also his drug dealers.
I'm not saying Mathew's murder wasn't horrible, I'm just saying; do your research before you judge Amy Ray.
Chelseagle listen to the lyrics...the 3rd line says " that town ain't no different than the rest" she is using the situation that happened with Matthew in Laramie as a metaphor for all the violence all over America against Gays. she is also talking about the Right wing nut jobs who used his death, funeral & the trial of his killers to push their anti-gay agenda....
Such a great song and so very little known by many people. I love Amy Ray's solo efforts as much as I love the Indigo Girls. It seems, though, that Ray is more willing to convey an unpopular message than Emily is. Perhaps I'm wrong.
RIP Matthew Shepard

ah thanks so much for putting up this song! I got harassed today when I was crossing a street and it's awesome to hear some queer consciousness.
