  • As I stated elsewhere: Leonard Cohen's sombre, word weary lyrics combined with Jennifer Warnes smooth contralto delivery and of course the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan's distinctive guitar work make this one of the most underrated late 80's pop/rock gems. It was the collective efforts of these talented people that made resulted in a great song being made.....

  • Yep. Stevie Ray without question!

  • This version is OK but I much prefer Cohen's, it's more chilling

  • @Inamourada Agree very much.

  • no point in this inferior version

  • enfin je découvre Jennifer Warnes... merci... merci...

  • Check out the YouTube clip of Ms Warnes singing her composition "Restless." Why that wasn't a monster hit eludes me.

  • IS THAT STEVIE RAY ON THE GITUAR? PLAYIN THE DO DO OUTTA THAT THANG BOY!!!!!!!!!

  • I can;t find it on itunes :( But great song!

  • @sushifornico No, I really think God should kick Steve Jobs back down to fix that.

  • @Referendaris ROFL!!

  • KICK ASS PERFORMANCE BY JENN!!!

  • JENN LOOKS VERY SEXY IN THIS VID!!!!!!!!WUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

  • First we take Manhatten(9.11), then we take Berlin.

  • Jennifer Warnes is such a beautiful lady

  • Fantastic song

  • in this song I think that the pupil is up his teacher 'the great songer and writer ever Mr. Leonard Cohen

  • in this song I think that the pupil is up his teacher 'the great songer and writer ever Mr. Leonard Chen

  • is this stevie ray vaughan?

  • @Alguzsando it is..but it's just the backing track..he's not there live..

  • yes, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robben Ford played on the album

  • Does anyone have a video of Ms Warnes singing "I'm Restless"? This song, which she wrote, is worthy of a lot more attention than it's received.

  • Uuuuund ... die Welt ist, wie sie vorher war. Kein Anschlag, kein glühender Pilz aus Wolken, keine Wahrheit. Tragisch.

  • schön ne 049 an ner wand zu sehen.....-.-

oh man ich arbeite heute auch noch 5 km entfernt vom olypiastadion ....

möge allah uns beistehen vor diese schweinehunde

  • What's meaning of the lyrics? The song is about some armed revolution?

  • @gorg22222

the german lyrics at the beginnings are about a terror attack in berlin.... on a disco "la belle"......... on the german-arabic society

  • Dowobeha = Don`t worry be happy!

  • jennifer "warnes" ...

  • gott schütze uns!

  • O_O totally illuminati song first manhattan then berlin.....

  • 26.06.11 Anschlag in Berlin.Frauen WM, Olympia stadion, Staatsterror..im prinzip das selbe wie am 11.September nur im größeren ausmaß.

Niemand hat die Absicht, eine Mauer zu errichten!!!

  • Anschlag?! first manhatten than berlin...

  • not good

  • Stevie Ray Vaughan you legend. Good job brother!

    We miss you.

  • 0:59 "I'm cuming nowww I'm cuming...."

Yes, reward us, reward us !!!

  • This album is in my top 5 of all time. Maybe number 1. Audiophiles use it to test very high end equipment because of it's stellar production values. Jennifer has a fantastic voice and the execution of the songs is superb.

  • awesome song and awesome version

  • She hat wonderful voice - especialy from 2:00 to 2:30

Jenny shold read a big book for me.

  • Yuk! This is an appalling version of Cohen's song which shows a total lack of understanding of the song.

  • @khasab Jennifer Warnes was actually the first person to record this song, for an album of Cohen songs that LC himself worked on with her in 1987. Stevie Ray Vaughan plays lead guitar. Cohen didn't record the song himself until a year later.

  • @shunn789 that's as may be. I still think it's an awful 'pop' version of the song and Cohen's own version is much better.

  • @shunn789 but you know, each to his own etc

  • KHASAB very interesting info on this song.. this is before Cohen and Stevie Ray Vaughn playin here! whoa! I even understand the lyrics..nice

  • @TREYOLDHIPPIE your point?

  • @khasab Oh, don't be such a silly snob. Jennifer sounds wonderful here.

  • @SoulstylistJukebox snob doesn't come into it. I just don't like this version. It's hardly of earth shattering importance.

  • @khasab Bollocks. I presume you're one of the five. You're outnumbered, mate.

  • @whigwood well let's see. Hmmm, where to begin... ok I don't know who 'the five' are unless it's the Famous Five but no, I don't think I'm one of them what ever they are. Now, according to your profile your 63, At 63 have you not got better things to do with your time? like trainspotting? Are you aware that trainspotters and other obsessive collectors of trivia, may be suffering from Asperger's Syndrome, a mild form of autism?

  • @whigwood Now as to being 'outnumbered'. You imply I must be wrong if more people think the opposite to me, but this is illogical nonesense. When Galileo said that the Sun was the centre of our solar system most people in the church believed the opposite; did that make him wrong? well, well, well, who knows why people like you write these silly notes? It's particularly odd when you get a reply to some comment you made months ago and didn't really care about even then.

  • A great song, a great voice!

  • Nice deep and clear voice!

I want stay a day with Jenny.

  • Jennifer is a one of a kind talent...a gift to the world. Lady GaGa is a gimmick, a flash in the pan...But Jennifer's work will live on and on...a True Classic voice and interpreter of the heart behind the songs she sings!!

  • Can anyone translate the into please.. always wanted to know...

  • @smrndoff Fuck off idiot. You're just another version of the same thing everyone fought against. You're a disgrace to your grandfather.

  • Comment removed

  • @smrndoff So how come you're so sucked in tby your own self importance? You claim to represent the silent majority because you can't imagine how anyone could disagree with your rock ape point of view. Dumb cunts like you get sucked in all the time because you can't think for yourself. 100 years ago it was the nun-raping, baby-eating Hun. Then it was Nazis, then Serbs and now it's someone else's turn. Go and join Stormfront you wimp. Your Grandfather should be ashamed of you.

  • @smrndoff "I merely claim know of one widely held opinion which is never given air time in the mainstream media." Why should it be if it's not news? You'd have to present lots of data to prove your assertion before any media organisation would get up and support it. Then you'd have to accept their right not to cover it. I have never denied there's a problem. What I hate is people mindlessly dumping all those innocent people with the 1% who do all the damage.

  • @smrndoff "Muslims get a bad press because they do bad things like cutting off human beings' heads whilst shouting out to their filthy deity." And Christians basically invented the concept of collateral damage. But I don't blame every Christian - or every American - for the 100,000 innocents killed by allied bombing in Iraq. I can probably provide you with more details of terrorist beheading of journalists etc but I don't blame the bloke in the local coffee shop (an Iraqi) for it.

  • @smrndoff "The get what they deserve. Don't blame those who are disgusted by that behaviour, blame the savages who do it. It's they who undermine your faith". We are supposed to be an enlightened culture. It is us who should lead the way yet here you are preaching hate from the internet pulpit while assuming a position of moral rectitude. Did you understand that boy? Islam is an Abrahamic religion so their God is the same as the Christian God. Geddit?

  • Comment removed

  • @smrndoff "I'm bored by you now son." Running away already? You haven't proven anything yet, just lots of emotional rhetoric and assertions that you are smarter than I am. You seem to think that Muslims invented murder, terror, barbarity and torture. Think again. Happens every day in the West, just as it happens there. The reason behind it is not important - for every murder there will be a different reason. What matters is that it happens.

  • @Camerameister Hi, perhaps a new meathod other than religion is needed in the teaching of Homo Sapiens to become Human Beings? Of course nothing is perfect and the bell curve will always be with us. Just a thought, Have a good one.

  • @SPAD58 Totally agree. You have a good one too. :)

  • Comment removed

  • @smrndoff "Half the globe has trouble with islamic terrorism and agitation." Did I say there wasn't a problem? No. I said it was unfair to saddle the vast majority with the blame for what a small radical minority does. You're putting words into my mouth and blaming me for doing the same to you.

Can you refute anything I said? No. You just resort to silly distractions.

    Now run away little boy.

  • @Camerameister

All muslims are terrorists who should be arrested, jailed, tortured, dorted or executed.

Now, there is what you've been accusing me of saying for the past several posts.

I'm really too bored to repeat what I actually have said. But I've just decided to give you what you so clearly need.

A simple, bigotted argument which makes you look ''right-on'' when you challenge it.

    Feel free.

It's only YOU who has said ALL MUSLIMS ARE BAD. I never said that. Not once. Not even a hint.

  • @smrndoff "It's only YOU who has said ALL MUSLIMS ARE BAD. I never said that. Not once. Not even a hint. " LOL!! Yes and I see you've removed all your previous posts so that you can cover your tracks. Nice try, you snivelling little ponce. You can't even own up to your own prejudices.

    PWNED.

  • beautiful woman,beautiful voice,beautiful song

  • "Famous Blue Raincoat" is the CD; "1st We Take Manhattan" is a song on the album. Stevie Ray Vaughn's on guitar. Come to think of it, this song would've probably been banned by the gov't after 9/11 (just a thought). Great song -- great great album. Every track on this album is perfection.

  • That is definitely SRV. He gives the Leonard Cohen lyrics life. SRV also resurrected the career of David Bowie in the album "Let's Dance". For some strange reason the producer Niles Rodgers buried him in "Modern Love". He also played on James Brown's 80's hit "living in America".

  • The only reason I watched this is to see Stevie Ray Vaughan play that guitar...

    RIP Stevie..

  • The Jennifer Warnes cover is amazing for a variety of reasons - not the least of which is the verbal German intro - can anyone give a rough idea of what the guy is saying.

German can be such a damn sexxy language. (The shot of Cohen at the end is a nice tribute.)

  • @poissonnoir

The german news-speaker talks about progress of the investigations on a terrorist attack at the discotheque "La Belle" in Berlin in 1986. That is, as you might know, not ficitve. Three persons, among those two US army members died an behalf of that terroristic attack which is said to be initiated by Ghaddafi/Libya.

  • @QuestionMarkComposer - Thanks for the information. It makes the message of the song that much stronger.

  • Was that Stevie? This is awesome!

  • poo

  • Right or wrong was that Stevie Ray Vaughan playing the lead

  • @geocyn48c Right..they did a few tunes together..what an awesome duo..

  • Listen to the lead guitar.

  • berlin is nothing like manhattan, totally different cultures

  • Love this song alive!!!

  • She looks hot as hell without those glasses on and a nice hairstyle!

  • great

  • The terrorist testament...

  • regarding to: "...I don`t like those drugs that keep you thin..."

regardless to say that X112 is way different than the fancy sealed stuff that doesn`t really come from boulder

  • Killer voice. Any of today's 'artists' capable of doing a live performance that's actually live like this? Nope.

  • People have questioned why there were so many young people running down the streets and what was the significance? It appears that Jennifer Warnes left the building quite suddenly after faced with a several locked doors. They may have been fans waiting outside and maybe not? Jen waited till they passed...clipped up her hair into a bob and started to run behind them in the same direction chasing whoever. They never did find her.

  • Why do she skip out:

"Remember me - I used to live for music"

"Remember me - I brought your groceries in"

    "Now, it's Father's Day - and everybody's wounded"

"First, we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin"

    ...at the end of song?

  • @TheRealOzzie234 The basis of this song goes back to 1950 - 1953. Back, not to 1929 Shirley Jane Temple as placed in x by the studios & press. Back to when the kid actors did Runt Wars & Cloudbusters - to Black Dalhia - to actors whose fathers were also ballplayers. Back to arrests & several suspicious deaths of the kids etc. The death of JK was considered part of retaliation possibly. Thus, we have the wrong way to deal with Joe Kennedy and the rite way which is to find evidence. Alot was lost

  • She really has a great voice and makes this song her own for this show. Excellent.

  • I frackin' loved this album!

  • ...chilling genius.

  • ...chilling genius.

  • "Guided by the beauty of our weapons" is 2 Corinthians 10:4, "For the weapons of our warfare are not fleshly but powerful by God for overturning strongly entrenched things for we are overturning reasonings & every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God & we are bringing every thought into captivity to make it obedient to the Christ." If it is God's will for all nations to exist, including aboriginals, then there is no weapon that can conquer the will of God. Eventually, we will win.

  • @iriswigle

    Thanks, that was enlightening.

  • The setting was a little strange. Perhaps it was reminiscent of the Haulocost camps. Jennifer did not choose this setting, She went immediately back to the gates rather than joining the crowd. After all, she was a German Jew whose family lines go back 300 years in the USA & Canada not exactly Germany. Although her mother's line goes back strongly to England, Scotland, France, Ireland & Prussian. The word "those" was used over "them" cause it confuses other impersonators...just a touch of paronia

  • iriswiggle: where do you get this momentous bull from?

  • @kevinherbert From me. My name is part of the copyright...right? I am just saying that the wired fence was someone else ideas. Do you know something that I don't know? The word "those" is more acceptable legally as a person can say, in a court, "Yes, I use to think like them" whereas "them" maybe construed as a confession..rite?

  • iriswigle: Perhaps it wasn't remininscent of the genocide camps (notice I don't use the Zionist branding of the word "Holocaust"....your statement ofd facts seems addled to say the least...sources please

  • @kevinherbert There is another possibility for the fenced in area ...a Bird in a Cage theme which some may elude to the Haulocost...rite? & 4 some, people, like Jews & Russians, they are still in a cage...rite? On the other side of this room, was a larger room with windows & the door was locked. Thus, Jennifer ran around the room, scaled the wall, grabbed a lock on the window and went out by window. Perhaps, it is a Birdie thingy. Love the "we promise you" aboriginal war chant at the end.

  • There is a small impersonation of Marlon Brando. Mr. Brando was part aboriginal and part Jew but to a slighter degree. At first he use to be "one of them" referring to people that mass together either for personal gain or for political reasons. One day he said to himself, "I am an aboriginal. I am a Jew." Aboriginals were still not allowed to walk the streets free in Chicago. He made a decision to fite for the freedoms to walk, live, etc for all peoples.

  • I forgot just how good she is. Thanks for the VID

  • Comment removed

  • I think the Lyrics deal with "How to become a terrorist" long before it happened in Manhattan. It is the story of the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion) in Germany.

  • @sbblues This is not a terrorist song. This is a song about the wrongful beating of someone's sister that lead back to Manhatten and to certain USA judges with a possibly Nazi program still running from the Two World Wars where people with copyrights and purses seem to be sent to camps and not all were Jews. The birthmark on the skin is Royal dna. It would be easier to look the other way but eventually there has to be a day & hour of reckoning...rite? It is a legal process thus the briefcases

  • @iriswigle

That was interesting too. Maybe Leonard Cohen has found that it is dangerous to criticise the powerful ones who imprison us directly, but put in a song it reaches our hearts and the reptiles just don't respond to that wavelength of communication so it goes under their radar?

  • @ethermonkey222 Even powerful ones make mistakes. The board is filling in quite nicely with charges being made publicly towards the Pope. I guess if powerful ones can be a threat to a musician and copyright holder maybe one day given enough rope they ll make a huge mistake just to win in court and write a book etc. Even powerful ones can trip up. It's just a matter of time before those briefcases spill open.

  • Yeah RIP SRV.

  • That IS SRV.

  • Under-rated.

  • Just received her 20th anniversary edition of famousblueraincoat.

I'll quote Leonard Cohens message on the front sticker:

"Her voice is like the California weather

filled with sunlight, but there's an earthquake behind it."

    Amen!

  • I love how she performs. She has style.

  • that was awesome! those high notes at the end were beautiful, and not even on the album version.

  • S.R.V. on Guitar.... Has to be good!!!

  • I own over 1000 CDs and "Famous Blue Raincoat" by Warnes & Cohen is in my Fav 10. Just magical. Beautifully recorded too. Through an audiophile system, it amazes.

  • As usual, its all about opinion. In my opinion ,this is one of the best (and,i beleive first, even before L.C.) versions of a stunning song by the finest female singer of the rock generation. Powerful, subtle, emotive, sublime, J.W. has it all. I have been listening to her for decades and never tire of doing so. I even like Dirty Dancing !!!!!!.Dirty Blue Raincoat is up there with the best collections/productions ever . Again i say,all about individual opinions.Rock on Jenny

  • Hmm if you like Jenny then look up Sheryl Crow's duet with Tony Bennett singing Goodmorning Heartache.

  • It's unfair to judge Jennifer Warnes' version based on a playback performance, i.e. live vocal, pre-recorded backing, especially when then the backing track is so low.

Her "Famous Blue Raincoat" album is awesome.

  • This is the first time I'm seeing her -- she's hott. And that song she does, right time of the night -- damn, I'm gonna explode!!

  • I don't know. I kind of like it. every artist will do it differently, and I think she did this okay.

  • Not really the best song for her...

  • google "milliondollarway" and "Jennifer Warnes" for more. She started out in "Hair."

  • I think that this is a superb cover. The whole Famous Blue Raincoat album is phenomenal!

  • She's ok but I agree with the previous comment, she doesn't have the magic of LC...very few do.

  • She doesn't have the magic of Leonard Cohen, I don't like this cover

  • Famous blue raincoat??

  • You're probably unaware herself and Cohen are pretty close friends. When she was doing better than him in the 80's she dropped the opportunity to tour to do backup for Cohen, she could have went off on her own a made a lot more money, but she's his friend.

  • This album went out of print about 10years ago. I have two originals and found a bootleg one in Galway. I love to hear LC sung by other people and am glad to have the Wainwright kid's try at it. Antony was the best.

  • anyone wanna guess the guitarist?

  • SRV

  • What do you think about our unique version of this song?

Find it here on YouTube: Ricky en Slingertje - Famous Blue Raincoat 2009

    Greetings from Holland

    Ricky & Slinger

  • Yep, nobody else sounds like Stevie Ray - god, I miss him.

  • Wow! Thank you for posting. This is awesome. YouTube will give a lot of these performers a second (or third or fourth or fifth) life. Surfing / connecting dots on YouTube will lead young folks to incredible talent coming from the sixties and seventies. To imagine that Jennifer got her start in "Hair" in 1969. Probably earlier, but that's where I first saw her "live" -- in Los Angeles.

  • So Famous Blue Raincoat was a album from Jennifer Warnes? I only know the song from Cohen, and that was on Songs of Love and Hate.
